View 4 RepliesI just passed a friend from Windows to Ubuntu Lucid.Everything fine, but he is a crossword maker addict. Under Windows, he use MS Publisher to make his crossword grids. With Linux, it's more difficult For now,he use OpenOffice Writer, with a big table, but the table is not very regular.I tried to install Scribus, but it's a professionnal PAO software, not a "easy to use" software as MS Publisher (that's a big ****, of course, but easy to use for neophyte)...I also tried to use free software or shareware for windows, but thera are always works with an algorythm crossword generator, when my friend want to place the word where he wants ! That's the goal and his passion !So I'm still looking for a PAO software very easy to use, or specific program (even Windows program with wine, even not free).

Most of the agents create their flyers and signs in Microsoft Publisher, I tried Open Office 3.X and I'm unable to open or edit the files in question.Do have any suggestions or could you point me in the direction of a solid solution that will help me either convert the files or a program that can be used with-in OpenSuse 11.2 that can edit the files

Is there a tool which I can convert it into another format (preferably PDF) rather than having to mess around getting publisher installed on wine etc etc?

I use dual monitors and it's extremely important to me to arrange them and keep 'em reliable. So I have been looking for an alternative for DisplayFusion on ubuntu since 1 year but I couldn't find any good result, if you know any sort of good drivers or programs to arrange the desktop and scale backgrounds perfectly.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly new to the Ubuntu community, having dl'ed Ubuntu 11.04 little more than a couple of weeks ago, deleting my Windows completely. I'm sure this has been said before, but I'm trying to find a good VoIP I can use to call my Windows using girlfriend who is currently very far away. Skype for Linux just crashes for me after a minute or two, Ekiga only allows me to make a call to any contact ONCE, then I can never do it again, tried Faceflow and couldn't even see or hear her. I'm running out of options, it seems. Will I really have to go back to windows just to see her?

I've been having some issues with the speed of firefox recently (on a netbook) and have been trying out other browsers such as chrome and midori. Currently I'm using xmarks, which fits my needs nicely however, I'm looking for an alternative that gives similar functionality and would allow me to access my bookmarks from several different computers (using both midori and chrome browsers).
xmarks has a development version for chrome, which is not working at the moment, and I cannot find any plans for xmarks in midori.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI keep hearing about this "alternative installation CD" so that I can encrypt my hard drive. But I can never seem to find it. I would like to use it and do a new install with an encrypted HD. Also, know I can google it, but I was hoping someone could point me to a how to on encrypting grub.
I would like to ask your thoughts of the security of a computer that has the bios password protected, grub password protected and the HD encrypted. I know it all seems excessive unless you are afraid of people who have physical access to your computer, which I am. I also know physical access = root access and that given physical access there is no way to secure the computer, however that does not mean I should not make it harder and more time consuming for the evil maid.
So I'm trying to create a spreadsheet that operates in hexadecimal, binary (maybe), and decimal, for fairly large values. While openoffice does handle hexadecimal fine, if you convert it to decimal (at least so far, if anybody has a more naturalistic way of doing this, that would be great), it can't seemingly handle how large the values are, and truncates. So, if possible, I would like an open source alternative that is perhaps more robust than OpenOffice. Hopefully one exists.

View 2 Replies View RelatedWith gnome-do, you can do things as quickly as possible (but no quicker). In a low-spec application, the 'do uses up ~16mb of ram even in idle mode, if I recall correctly. Are there any lighter alternatives to gnome-do? It's so useful - but I feel like its functionality could be even snappier.
