I just compiled X from source, and am using the latest nvidia drivers. However, it isn't working. I do "startx" and after a couple of seconds of screen flicker, X simply bails out. I get no error messages, just this:

I installed latest nvidia driver with SMXI. I have noticed that anything that uses open GL or GLX does not function. Screensavers, games etc. Output from glxinfo as follows

I already posted this message on another thread but I'd like to start a new thread with it now, and add a few more details. My son and I are having trouble getting the graphics card to work properly in his computer. The resolution is good, but the graphics card is not fully functioning. He works on animation and graphics of several kinds, and the graphics programs cannot run without a fully functioning graphics card.
The computer will not run Blender and other graphics programs. Nor will it even allow for the "normal" "Visual Effects" in the "Appearance Preferences." (It comes up with the error: "Desktop effects could not be enabled," after it tries to find the driver.) The system is:
Graphics Card: nVidia G92, GeForce 8800 GT
System: Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic, 2.6.31-17-generic, 4.4.1 (x86_64-linux-gnu)
Processor: AMD Athlon 64 X2 Dual Core 4200+ (3 Gigs RAM)
We know the graphics card works because it works in Windows. (We set up the computer to boot off of either of two hard drives -- either in Windows XP or Ubuntu 9.10, karmic.) Neither my son nor I understand much of the terminology on your forums, although I have been using Ubuntu for some years and have read quite a bit. (I also have the "Beginning Ubuntu Linux" book.) I love Ubuntu, but sometimes I just cannot figure out how to get some things running. We have tried many different ways of installing the drivers and setting up the xorg.conf file. We have followed the instructions on this and other threads. We also installed NVIDIA-Linux-x86-64-190.53-pkg2.run, as well as 173 and 185. The screen will only work at a proper resolution when we set the "Driver" to "nv" in the xorg.conf file. The screen goes completely blank and dead if we set the "Driver" to "nvidia." Then we need to reboot in safe mode and edit the xorg.conf file with VIM.

You do not appear to be using the NVIDIA X driver. edit your X configuration file (just run `nvidia-xconfig` as root), and restart the X server.
Last night did a shutdown -h +120 which I have done regularly without problems. Only difference was there were some updates to go on which I said Restart later to.
Now my NVIDIA driver is screwed - as in I can't get my dual screens working. I have tried: sudo nvidia-config as suggested but not sure what it means by restart X server - PC restarted? No difference.
The first thing I do is press ctrl-alt-f1. Then I do this:

./NVIDIA-linux-x86-260.19.12.run Then it comes up with the error that I have X-server running.
I've also tried Code: /etc/init.d/gdm stop but that command wasn't recognised. I've also tried Code: killall -9 X but there are no processes called X
i installed the new beta 10.04 and it seemed right after the install and update that both nvidia hardware drivers were automatically install together. i deactivated both drivers. one driver showed the nvidia 173 driver and the other one showed "current" nvidia driver.
after a restart i then tried to activate the 173 driver. system required a restart. so i did. system booted to a black screen. i believe its at the desktop but i am unable to see it. i tried to hit esc at the boot screen to enter the grub menu but that didnt work.
The freeze's on my machine only appears when i monitor the temperature of
the gpu. Normally i use gkrellm to monitor temperatures including the gpu temperature. When i stop gkrellm there a no more freeze's on my system. Then i started nvdock which also monitor the gpu temperature and the freeze's are back. Stopping nvdock make the system working normally. I have done a few reboots now, warm and also cold starts und everything works normal.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am experiencing the following issue. After enabling SLI and PhysX in windows vista, my dual boot fedora 10 does not see the NVIDIA driver.
Doing: cat /proc/drivers/nvidia/0 I get? in the VGA bios for both cards.
I disabled both SLI and PhysX in vista, but the problem persists. I powerdown and unplugged the rig for several hours without results.
Here are my specs:
CPU: Intel Q9300
Board: MSI P7N Diamond
CARD0: EVGA Gforce 8800 GTS
CARD1: EVGA Gforce 8800 GTS
RAM : 4 Gbytes OCZ gold PC6400 (4 x 1 Gbytes)
PSU : Thermaltake SLI ready 850 W
It is important to mention that initially Fedora did see the cards and I was able to set up a dual monitor system. It right was after I enable SLI and PhysX and re-booting into Linux that the problem showed up.
I have seen this issue before in another machine with an ASUS board, but not until today I associated with the SLI setup. My guess is that there has to be something that the driver is enabling in the cards that messes up the interface between the nvidia.ko module and the kernel, but I don't know what may fix it. I need this system for some numerical calculations.
Only about 1.5 weeks into Linux guys so bear with me. I'm trying to uninstall the Nouveau driver and install NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.14-pkg1.run for my old Nvidia TNT2 card. Following these directions I run into a problem in the first step. When I execute the Ctrl+Alt+F1 command and get:
Ubuntu 10.10 splat-desktop tty1 splat-desktop login: if I enter splat which I believe is my username and the correct p/w I get an incorrect login response.
There is one thing missing (I think) a clear guide to clearing out Nvidia and replacing it with nouveau. For all but hardened gamers, nouveau on 11.4 delivers. It also removes one more barrier to what I think is the intended goad of Tumbleweed.The problem IMHO is not that there are no clear guides. The problem is there are too many. No sooner does one person do a guide (that is clear) and someone else who does not like some point writes another guide that they think is more clear (but in fact is less clear in other aspects). And this goes on ad infinitum.IMHO we have too many guides - many of which are sufficient clear ... but the VAST number only serves to confuse users more.
Having typed that, IMHO this is NOT a Tumbleweed specific issue, but its MUCH WIDER in scope and hence does not belong as a discussion in this Tumbleweed thread.
Can do nothing with the PC. New install of 10.04 and was prompted to install Nvidia driver. Did so. Rebooted, now have nothing except a thin line at top of screen. How can I remove this driver when I see nothing?

The plan is to have web pages attached to a database where data provided by the users will be stored and to have programs that will process this data to generate new pages or PDF reports. I plan to user FireBird as the database manager and build the front end with Lazarus, if possible. My desktop is a small Acer with a 1TB hard disk. At the moment it has 1 partition containing Windows 7 which I would like to keep, for now. My internet connection is a phone company supplied standard residential high speed. Here are my questions, if this idea is actually possible:How should I partition the disk or is a root and home partition OK? When I install Slackware, is there anything special that I must do? How do I actually let the web know that this server exists? Are there any Slackware specific sites where I can learn how to do this type of stuff?

I thought things were running nicely with the free driver because I had compositing working on my dismal graphics card... But scrolling in firefox is slow/laggy so I tried installing the binary driver with 1click install. But I restarted and still have the same problem. I think I might still be using the nouveu driver? View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm somewhat familiar with Linux and became pretty decent at installing and configuring packages in Ubuntu. One of the things I was able to do with my tinkering was set up a functioning imap and pop3 mail server using dovecot-postfix. Now I'm experimenting with Slackware to get the feel of another distro, and I noticed that the mail server packages were already installed. On my client computer they can pick up that I have users configured and my mx record is working.
However it is failing to send mail saying that it is failing to relay the e-mail message and that the server responded 5.7.1 which was a problem that I was having in Ubuntu when first configuring the mail server. The fix was to edit the postfix.conf file and adding the localhost name of my server. Does anybody know of the file that I need to edit to make it possible to relay my messages with both pop3 and imap.
I`am trying to install drivers for a very old graphics card GeForce2 GTS/Pro on Suse 11.2. I downloaded driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86-71.86.13-pkg1.run and install it successfully. But when I launch "sax2 -r -m 0=nvidia" it crushes with error "isax: could not import file: /var/cache/sax/files/config at /usr/sbin/isax line 199"

I have some trouble installing the nvidia driver on Fedora12. I started to follow the guide posted by Leigh here:[URL]..I enabled the rpmfusion repo, but when i wanted to install kmod-nvidia and xorg-x11-drv-nvidia-libs.i686 i had a depadency failure Here's what i got:

I've installed the nvidia driver from nvidia website. I don't want to mess up my system So my question is how can I uninstall this nvidia driver? (I want to install the one from youm repo)

I'm somewhat new to Fedora but not Linux in general. I went to install the nvidia driver as per any instructions I found on the internet that yielded results. I typed sudo yum install kmod-nvidia and eventually got a driver, blacklisted nouveau, restarted, and finally got compiz and all my desktop effects.
The problem was when I played Minecraft, which for those who don't know is a game, from a .jar file. After ~5 minutes of playing something happens and everything freezes. Video completely stops but I still have mouse control and sound(at least for anything already running). Clicking stuff does nothing and no hotkeys work to bring up anything at all. I end up having to do a reset by hand to get anything done. Turning off desktop effects didn't help.
Why is this? Did I install the wrong driver, even though kmod-nvidia should find the right one on it's own? nvidia 8800 GT is my card. Could it be the java program screwing things up royally? I can't remember if the program worked fine on it's own before the driver install, but uninstalling the driver now causes the game to fail on launch, which I guess makes sense but can't figure out if it's simply the lack of driver or if removing the driver screwed something else up. I might just reinstall fedora and start from scratch again, but before I did that I wanted to find out if I'm just installing the wrong driver and can simply find teh right one to fix all of this.
I am stuck with Fedora 13 due to the fact that clutter has some nasty bug which colides with the nvidia binary blob driver (I _require_ CUDA _and_ usable 2D/3D). So the new version is out since some days ago but not yet in rpmfusion. So did anyone give 260.19.29 a shot and does the 2D/3D UI still lag?
View 14 Replies View RelatedI've tried linux many times in the past, and I'm always irritated to the point of formatting it, shredding the disk, and cursing it while enjoying my windows. Anyhow, (for some reason beyond me) I'm trying it again. Let me start off with the fact that I am very very irritated with how difficult this is becoming (why the hell can't nvidia just make a driver I can install without all of this crap?). OK, so I know how to cd to a directory, login as root. Any time I try to install the nvidia driver, it tells me I need to close X. I've tried going into the recovery terminal and it tells me this. I've also tried the command "/etc/init.d/gdm stop" and then it just takes me to a black screen.I can't do anything from there but push ctrl+alt+delete to restart.So,if anyone can give me simple steps that would be great. I don't want to learn how to use the OS, I just want to install this driver so I can read text and more than half of my monitor is displayed on,I'm on linux hardy heron 8.04
View 9 Replies View RelatedA few days ago I installed 10.04 Lucid beta-2 and it came up OK. I then chose the recommended Nvidia driver "version current", which caused my system to come up in low graphics mode. I removed the driver and the system came up with no X11. I gave up.Yesterday I installed again, hoping that newer updates would fix the problem. The boot is now OK with no proprietary driver activated and all updates installed as of now (April 14, 05:30 GMT).
The Hardware Drivers dialog shows two choices: Nvidia version 173 and "version current (recommended)". Both of these show the status "this driver is activated but not currently in use". The only option offered is the button "remove".
I just installed Ubuntu 10.04 RC, and only basic graphics work.I have Nvidia GeForce 9600 GT. I cant enable desktop effects, nor can i watch video or anything else. Is there a way to install nvidia driver in RC? It looks and feels real nice i wish i can start using it right now.

View 1 Replies View RelatedEven with Envyng it won't let me try to install other drivers.I've been able to uninstall 169.12 but Envyng will only produce an error message in terminal stating that other drivers can't be installed. I've tried installing them while booting into recovery mode
but I still can't get any other drivers to load Sometimes I got nothing but the terminal when I rebooted, so I would use:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
and reboot...this would put me right back to driver 169.12 but I need another driver as 169.12 crashes an application.
This is a followup/secondary question from another post earlier this morning.[URL].. Info: Lucid 10.04, 4GB ram, Nvidia video, home built pc. I'm fairly certain that when I enable the pae kernel this time, I'll get usage of the full 4GB of memory that I have installed.
The problem is, that I did enable the pae kernel earlier this week to test something out, but ran into a problem. It came up in "low graphics mode" (800x600). As you can image, I wasn't real thrilled about that.
I went to System->Administration->Hardware Drivers to get the video driver straightened out. I figured it just needed one compiled for the pae kernel... Well, it didn't find one. Is there one? Is there a procedure to get one installed/compiled, if there isn't one?
I don't know if I want to mess with trying to get the Nvidia drivers working for pae, when I only stand to gain another ~700MB of memory. Currently showing 3.2GB. I'm not sure if its worth my trouble..
