Software :: Why Have To Make Files World Readable?

Mar 17, 2011

Linux permissions have always frustrated me. They are really annoying to work with and very unversatile compared to NTFS.Here's my current situation, and I don't understand what's going on here.

I have a server with a smb share, a user on another machine is in the group that is assigned to those files. The files are chmodded 770. If the user is in that group then technically that user should have access to those files... but it does not. If I chmod to 775 then the user has access. WTF? Why? I don't care given it's a local server, but still, if I have to make files world readable for a single user to have access even though I granted those rights through the filesystem and through samba, then that's a huge security issue, and it's no wonder we're not seeing Linux used for enterprise file servers.

Another thing that pisses me off with linux permissions is when a new file is created, the permissions arn't inherited. This folder gets lot of data added to it but it defaults to whatever the default permissions are. I need to run a script to periodicly fix all the permissions. To me this is really messy.

General :: Files Not World-readable On CD (Ubuntu)?

Aug 31, 2010

I got a CD of JPG files from a photographer. Some of the files are not readable on my Ubuntu machine (they show up as X icons in the Nautilus file browser). I figured out that the reason is that they are not "world-readable" (and also not "group-readable") and they are owned by a user that does not exist on my machine. I am able to work around it by doing sudo nautilus Is there any easier way to do this? I am thinking some setting I can make on my system relating to the CD driver works?

Fedora Security :: User "jetty" Is World-readable - Screen Started To Flicker Some Time ?

Oct 3, 2010

This morning I ran sectool (in terminal for the first time. Before that I used sectool-gui) and I got this (written to file)...

See attachment please..

I think... the user "Jetty" may be a part of (or has something to do with SQL?).. This machine I have is not a server (in fact I know pretty much nothing about web servers).. this machine is used purely for local app development (python PyQt4/ and C++/wx - making games, general utilities, specialized calculators...etc)

So... Can anyone please tell me who the user "Jetty" is ? (The others are safe, I compiled python/SIP/PyQt4/wx/aliens from source... so that;s probably why it doesn't belong to packages.

Plus, My screen started to flicker some time (could it be possible someone is messing w/ my xorg configs?)

General :: User Registrations Can Make A World Change?

Dec 11, 2010

TitleThink user Linux registrations can make a world change? The questionDo you think the registration of Linux users can make people, companies, governments, institutes, and everything related to technology change their opinions (minds)?Introduction My first experience with a PCI used proprietary software since I owned a PC. Starting from the operating system to the programs all was backed by a closed company.EurekaAt the year 2004, I have read a magazine that mentioned the word "Linux", it was the first time I got to know that actually there was other Operating Systems than Windows. I "googled" and "wikipped"(searched), all the information I could get about that new system(for me).

After few searchs the word "Debian GNU/Linux" came up. I have burned the ISO file for a brand new CD and got all enthusiast.ExperienceI had actually complete the command line install, but always thinking for myself "What a waste of time!" (Yeah... such an idiot I was at that time).

After the installation, I booted the distribution and at the minimal error and/or thing that didn't worked like I pretended, I would just say a lot of terrible things and give up.The second chanceOnly at about 2007, I gave Linux other chance(ironic, like Linux was the guilty for my lack of skills. I downloaded and burned the Ubuntu Linux 6.06 Live CD ISO.

I was astonished when the CD booted,
asked for language and actually changed it.
Then the Live Environment "flashed"(appeared).

I was out of words and almost regretted everything I have said about Linux efforts(I still didn't had a open mind tough). For the first time I actually faced-up the problems and issues that came up, but annoying everyone and saying bad stuff(I'm terribly sorry). The enlightenmentOnly at about end of 2009, I started actually wanting to learn how everything worked. That was the time I changed for Slackware Linux distribution. I learned many stuff. But with the time, I realized that the important isn't the Operating System and/or Distribution we use, is the use that we make of it. Nowadays I use about any distribution without complaining much. We need to respect the work of others after all, and we can learn with the mistakes too.

All this to askThe questionDo you think the registration of Linux users can make people, companies, governments, institutes, and everything related to technology change their opinions (minds)?NOTE: This reflects for BSDs, OpenSolaris(now over) and all other related open source software not just Linux.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: CD / DVD Is Mounted But Files Are Not Readable

Mar 30, 2010

I have a little problem using CDs or DVDs. If I put a disc in my DVD-Recorder it is mounted and the content of the disc is shown in dolphin (or any other programm for that matter). The names and attributes (size, date etc) of the folders and files are all correctly shown - except it is a multisession-disc, then there are only files of one of the sessions (probably the first) shown. The permissions say that the files are readable (user is my useraccount and group is "root").However, if I try to open a file on the disc, the program (for example sm-player if it is a video) freezes or displays a message that the file is corrupted (for example open office if it is a textfile).Trying to copy a file from the disc to the harddrive results in an error that the file is not readable, but there is a file created on the harddrive - it has the correct name but the size is 0B.Burning a disc with k3b creates also an error, although the disc is correctly recognized - but as soon as the burning should start an error occurs.I'm pretty sure that it is not an hardware-issue, since this DVD-Drive has worked fine under openSUSE11.1-32bit and it still works if I put a bootable disc in. There is no problem runnig a live-CD and I had no problems with the drive when I installed the very same system that I'm working with from a disc.Logging in as root doesn't change a thing.

I tried to search if this problem was solved before, but all I found were problems where the disc-drive wouldn't mount at all ... so please, if anyone knows a solution or at least a place where I can found one - I really have no idea what to do about this.

Ubuntu :: Remove Windows 7 - Reintegrate Partition & Make The World A Better Place

May 24, 2010

Currently have a dual boot HTPC running windows 7 & ubuntu 9.10 , windows pulled "no longer a valid"on me after an update an i was left with a limited machine. I figure now is as good time as any to go full with a fully linux system. However, i am having some problems.

1) Windows 7 needs purged from my system.. like a cancer. I need to get rid of my sda1 windows partition. I gathered i will need gparted and grub2.. But will i need a Gpart liveCD? I need someone to take my though it.

I got and ran Gparted. My system seems to have 3 partitions with 2 unallocated spaces.

2) I will need to remount the windows partition after i reformate it and get rid of windows. I will likely need help with this as well. believe it is also worth noting that i believe wubi was used to put Ubuntu on this machine.

Ubuntu :: Creating Readable File From Multiple Html Files

Oct 2, 2010

Here is the deal: my school purchased a test prep which they distributed to us, the only problem is that it is for windows. When I try to run the exe in wine the program windows pops up but the screen is blank (i can see the menu bar and and the title bar). It appears that most of the information is located in a folder as html files (separated into chapters for each section) with links to all the figures/tables/questions
(also html files). This morning I have been trying to find a way to compile the html files into a format that I can read without having to hunt for each individual html file. I tried navigating with firefox but had to change each individual link before I could do that (very time consuming), I tried using doxygen (the GUI front end) to convert it to Latex/rtf/html/xml (all the formats) but did not have any success (It could be that I am using the app wrong). I tried opening some java applications found within the application data folder in hopes that it would bring up the navigator without success. And even tried installing java in wine (unsuccessfully) to see if that was the missing key to run the program in wine.

My question is, do I just have to fork out the $500+ that it would cost me to purchase the books instead of using the school provided program (free to us)? or is there a relatively simple way to compile these files into a format that could be readable.

tl;dr - have multiple html files for a windows native program that won't run on wine that I would like to convert to a more easily readable format (i.e. chm, pdf, etc), is it possible?the program was legally acquired through my school, I did not download or pirate it. I am not looking to distribute it, just looking to use it for my own studying purposes without spending $500+ or buying a windows license/computer.

Fedora :: How To Make Drives Readable / Writable In Fedora 14?

Dec 29, 2010

I decided I could get by without WIN7 on my computer on a permanent basis, so re-installed Fedora 14 on drive SDA (Drive 0), previously occupied by WIN7, and formatted all other drives in the system (SDB, SDC, and SDD to EXT4.The install went well, and everything is working except one thing - I cannot get SDB,SDC or SDD to copy files one to the other. The message I get is that permissions do not allow this process. The automount works OK, and I can access the contents of individual files on these drives, but as far as copying goes, there is no go.What other parameters do I have to add to the automount in /etc/fstab to allow for this read/write function, or am I looking in the wrong area entirely?I have searched these forums and the Internet in general, but I cant seem to find anything specific to this problem.

General :: 'make Menuconfig' To Make These Files Modules Rather Than Compiled Elements?

Feb 25, 2011

I need to modify fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c to make my modifications. I cannot find any options in 'make menuconfig' to make these files modules rather than compiled elements. I'm thinking these cannot be modules because the file system won't work without open.c and read_write.c. Is this correct - I cannot compile fs/open.c and fs/read_write.c as modules, only as compiled elements? Or, is there some way for a module to overwrite these routines when the module is installed and re-enable the routines when the module is removed?
