View 1 Replieswe know that /etc/passwd - is a replica of /etc/passwd file and acts as a backup in any damage done to /etc/passwd file..i have observed a strange thing in RHEL 5.4....for example... if /etc/passwd has 100 accounts.. then /etc/passwd - is having only 99 accounts....when i add 101 useraccount with "useradd" then /etc/passwd has 101 accounts and /etc/passwd is having the 100th account of /etc/passwd - ..when i delete /etc/passwd and recover it with /etc/passwd - from runlevel 1 the lastly created user is not having his account after recovery.. what is the solution? this is same case even with /etc/shadow and /etc/shadow -

This happens because I happen to log in from another place. In this case, that means that Empathy is logging me in, but it's still stucks on "Connection".

View 5 Replies View RelatedI had a serious breach of the cellular segment of my communications network this week. All I can say is nobody got hurt. The attackers also knew where to find me via email. I'm concerned that perhaps they've penetrated this aspect of my system as well, although they seemed pretty specifically focused on the phone. There have been no changes on anything on my computer, and of course, I went ahead and changed all the passwords. How can I verify or at least look into the possibility of having been hacked as well.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI got a CD of JPG files from a photographer. Some of the files are not readable on my Ubuntu machine (they show up as X icons in the Nautilus file browser). I figured out that the reason is that they are not "world-readable" (and also not "group-readable") and they are owned by a user that does not exist on my machine. I am able to work around it by doing sudo nautilus Is there any easier way to do this? I am thinking some setting I can make on my system relating to the CD driver works?

When using this on a centos 5(CentOS release 5.5 (Final)) server the output is the way I would like to have it. But when using it on our RHEL server (Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.3 (Tikanga)) it is almost unreadable. This RHEL server has been installed by another company so I don't know what they have configured. Now when I try to create a dialog box it is just waiting but not displaying anything.
View 2 Replies View RelatedWhen I try to connect a projector to my laptop (already running) and hit the fn+f7 (the designated button for switching screen), nothing happens. I see "no source found" on projector screen and my laptop screen works perfectly. Now if I restart the laptop with the projector connected, I see all the intial booting messages on the projector screen (not on my laptop), then the gnome login screen appears on both the projector screen and laptop (when the login screen appears on laptop it looks like it has lower resolution than my usual laptop resolution). But immediately after I log in, my laptop screen goes blank, and projector screen becomes the only active screen.
If I restart without the projector, again all normal operation on laptop screen is restored.
I feel like I am missing some very silly options. Any help is appreciated.
Here is the output of xrandr when the laptop is connected:

I am not sure whether this is something that can be answered here, but I figured this is the best place to start (next to google not giving me the answer I was looking for). One of our clients are running HPUX as filesystem, however when the support guys need to report the filesystem space they keep getting it wrong. Even after someone gave them the full command which will do the calculations for them, they still seem to make mistakes. On linux the df -h works very weel but this is obviously not available here...can use to display the filesystem space in the correct formats? Even if there is a set of commands that we can work into a script and they can then just run the script.

View 2 Replies View RelatedAll servers mentioned below run OpenSuSE, either 10 or 11.I am currently working on a few scripts that are meant to be used as part of a continuous integration setup. I am trying to keep these scripts reasonably secure, and so I have made sure that all the servers run these scripts only as a specific user (user1) that has permissions to basically nothing else. The problem I am currently running into is that I need to start and stop tomcat as user1 but this user doesn't have permissions to the tomcat rectory (only tomcat has execute permissions). I have a temporary workaround in place while I work on the scripts (I have an SSH key in place that allows me to SSH from user1o tomcat without a password and execute my commands that way) but it is not very secure. I have tried adding the following line to /etc/sudoers:
Code:
tomcat localhost = NOPASSWD: /opt/tomcat/bin/startup.sh, /opt/tomcat/bin/shutdown.sh
but it doesn't work as I expected it to. I tried a few different syntaxes for that line,

I do not need a centralised database just a login auth system. On the server I make a folder called /sec and symlink passwd, group and shadow into it.I export this via nfs.On the workstation I create a folder /sec, move the passwd, group and shadow file into it and then symlink them back into the /etc folder. On bootup, the rc.local mounts server /sec over the top of workstation /sec. If it fails it falls back.I wasn't sure if I could just mount /sec on the workstation and then temporarily symlink group, passwd, shadow over the top of the /etc/shadow etc
View 4 Replies View RelatedAfter moving a website folder on my local development machine to another drive, then moving it back, I got a 403 error. Most of this problem had probably to do with rights that got messed up. After deleting the code and restoring it from SVN, the rights seemed allright. The error stayed however.
The setup is a bit complex, as follows:
I have Ubuntu 10.4 as development machine, trying to mimic the server as much as possible We use Eclipse + SVN and I create all projects in a local folder under my user account In /var/www-vhosts I create folders for each vhost, like this one: test.localhost test.local/index.php: includes the index file of the project
test.local/.htaccess is a dynamic link to the htaccess file in a project subfolder
I get the following error in the apache error log:
The problem seems to be the .htaccess file, or the link to it. When I empty the htaccess, nothing changes When I remove the link, the index-include produces some output (in the apache error log) When I remove the link and replace it with the actual file, I get another error:
I was looking around the files in /etc/ to see what they were and what they said, then I noticed there was two files called passwd, which confused me a lot for a second then I noticed one of them was actually passwd-.I compared them and they only differed by one line:
< games:36:35:added by portage for gemrb:/usr/games:/bin/bash, which was in passwd but not passwd-.Should these files both exist? If yes, why, what does having both do? If no, then its safe to say I can just delete passwd-
i am executing the passwd command on a solaris 10 OS and every time its aborting (as shown below). how to troubleshoot this..
