Ubuntu :: Thunderbird Install - Keyboard Locks When Password Requested

Feb 22, 2011

I'm trying to install thunderbird, and I found the instructions.
Open terminal window / Code: sudo aptitude update /
I am then prompted for my password, but they keyboard will not register any keystrokes! [new paragraph] I love ubuntu and what it does for me security-wise. I love that it is opensource. I really do. But I have yet to install a single program on it, without extensive help from the help forums and a process taking days at the minimum.

Ubuntu :: Cannot Remember The Password For The Computer If It Locks

Nov 19, 2010

I am running edubuntu in one of the classes of the school i support. My problem is that the children cannot remember the password for the computer if it locks. I have it set to auto login on the class user and I have disabled the screensaver asking for a password on resume, and disabled the powerdown options. So in theory it should stay on the desktop until they shutdown. However there is still the option to lock the computer and i am sure that they will find it and manage to lock themselves out of the computer! I am a linux beginner, but i have followed a few guides on the internet. I could really do with having their user with no password, so if they accidentally lock the computer they only have to click unlock to resume their computing.

At the same time, I want the keyboard and mouse to remain connected because even though they will seldom be needed, when they are needed it's important that they be available quickly.I guess I'm looking for a screensaver that doesn't save the screen. How do I turn this ANNOYING feature off, as I have the tradition menu there & makes life difficult. It locks the desktop to reenter the password after 5 minutes. I turned the screen-saver off & unchecked the lock desktop setting in there also. I tried to search for these, but ever time I did it would tell me it was to generic of a search.

Debian Multimedia :: Password Prompt Locks All App-switching In Gnome

May 5, 2015

I often need to login into various accounts. In Debian 7 I always was able to copy and paste passwords from text files if I was asked for an input, but now the textfield for password input locks the whole system and I can't do anything else before I have supplied the password. Is there any way of restoring the old behaviour to make password input forms (like the request for GPG key passwords in Evolution) just being an addintional app-window instead of an input request, that locks everything else? I want to be able to open the proper file with the login data when prompted for it.

I know I could theoretically solve this issue by using a general system wide main key which would supply all individual login data, but I want to memorize some often needed phrases by actually typing them when I need them. I just want the possibility to open text files for copy and paste when I'm prompted for a password if this is something I don't even want to remember.

Ubuntu Installation :: Install Crash - Either Locks Up Or The Screen Goes Black

Feb 8, 2010

I've been using Ubuntu for about a year or so and have never had any problems installing it up until now.

I can boot from live CD for 9.10, but if at any point I attempt to install it to my hardrive, it either locks up or the screen goes black. Sometimes I'm able to start the installer, but the screen will go blank. The most progress I've been able to make on the install was up to 98% before it locked up, every other time I've gotten a blank screen or a lock up around 40-60%. After a hard reboot I get an error that reads "DISK BOOT FAILURE. INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER"

This problem doesn't only occur with 9.10, but with every other linux distro I've tried on it. My first attempt was with Ubuntu Studio, but I got similar errors. I've searched literally for hours and have found nary a solution that even comes close to solving my problem. using HP Pavilion a404x desktop

Software :: Virtualbox Locks Laptop When I Try To Install Windows Xp / Fix It?

May 30, 2010

I have a dell computer that runs kubuntu very nicely. Virtualbox runs in it great and i installed windows xp in a breeze.

My dell laptop however freezes up when i try to boot my windows install cd. I'm running kubuntu on it as well (both run 10.04) and both were just freshly installed with kubuntu.

I just can't boot the cd for some reason. Laptop totally locks up and you have to press the power button for 5 seconds to turn it off.

It's an amd turion 64 x2 dual core processor in my laptop, whereas my desktop is an intel e5200 cpu. That's the only thing i can think of that might require special settings or something in virtualbox. I've played around with all the cpu settings in virtualbox, but every single time, it totally locks up the computer.

Ubuntu :: Keyboard Stops Working In Terminal When Asked For Password?

Mar 26, 2010

I am working on a Dell Inspiron 9400 with 9.10 installed and (thus far) working quite well. However, when I type in a command into Terminal (I was trying to install Amarok), the terminal asks for my password and the entire keyboard stops working. As in, I can hit any numerical or letter key, and nothing happens in the terminal but the blinking cursor. The specific command was "sudo apt-get install amarok", and then it asks for my password, and I'm not able to make an entry.

I've tried changing to a couple of the different Dell laptop keyboards in System>Preferences, but again, before typing the command into the terminal, everything is working fine (inside AND outside of the terminal). After the password prompt comes up and the keyboard stops working in terminal, all the character keys still work fine still outside of the terminal.

Debian :: Password Keyboard Layout In Chroot

Sep 18, 2015

I tried to install Debian on my MyBook Live NAS following this [URL] ..... I was as happy as a sandboy when the SSH login finally was reachable after the process which went through without any errors or problems. But thats not the end - my password is not accepted and so i can't login.

In more technical terms here's my question: I chrooted into a newly debootstrapped system and changed the password using simple 'passwd'. Having done that on another machine i could find out that there are no locales/keyboard settings applied. My guess is that in this case the default US(?) settings and the keyboard layout are used.

Not aware of any issue here i entered a password containing special characters like " and ! and @. After investigating further I found out that in the chroot environment my keyboard layout from the host is used, which is bad because i do not know what environment was set in the originally MyBook system. All the action was done via SSH using kitty.

Disassembly would be the last exit which i would like to avoid. What keyboard layouts are used in chroot without locales set AND which one is used in the openssh login prompt? Is there a way to enter the password in a <ALT> + x format?

Networking :: Realtek Rtl8192u Driver Locks Up System (Puppy 4.3.0, Fresh Install)?

Jan 20, 2010

I've got a Puppy system running version 4.3.0 that I'm trying to get on the home network. I'm using a D-Link DWA-130 (H/W revision C), which has a Realtek RTL8192U chipset. I got the drivers off of D-Link's website, and they compiled and installed just fine, but when either a) I try to connect to the network, or b) while I'm browsing the web, the system locks up completely. No mouse, no keyboard, no Ctrl-Alt-Bksp to get out of X, nothing.

I'll outline my steps: Install Puppy using a "Full" HDD install (not "Frugal"). Copy the "devx_430.sfs" file (which I got from the Puppy website) from a thumb drive to the "my-documents" folder (although the exact location proabably doesn't matter). Mount it, cd to the mounted directory and execute "cp -a --remove-destination ./* /" and "sync". Copy the kernel source for 2.6.30.5 ("kernel_src-2.6.30.5-patched.sfs4.sfs") to the same directory. Mount it and execute the same commands as before. Copy the folder containing the RTL8192U drivers ("rtl8192u_linux_2.6.0006.1031.2008") to the root directory (i.e. "/"). cd to the folder in the terminal and run "make", "make install".Reboot the machine. Set up networking using the Puppy Internet Connection Wizard. HERE'S WHERE IT SCREWS UP: It connects, but after a while (e.g. just after logging into LQ through it, as a test) it freezes the entire system.

I have to do a hard reboot ("panic button"), then a soft reboot (for some odd reason the usb module won't load after a hard reboot, so the mouse won't work) to get the system working again, only to have it lock up again once it connects to the network.

Are these drivers broken? Outdated? Is there anything I can do to fix this? EDIT: I should add that this only occurs when the adapter is plugged in. If I boot the system with it unplugged, it works fine (probably because it never loads the kernel module).
