Software :: VirtualBox : Start And Shutdown Guests VMs On Startup?

Jun 21, 2010

I'm preparing a vitualization server (host) with VirtualBox. This machine, running Debian, is intended to run in HeadLess mode, without GUI.
I've got some guests VMs running. But I was wondering about the best way to start this guests VMs on startup and shut them down kindly when host is shutdwon.

Virtual Machines run under non-root user. I was thinking about making a script in /etc/init.d/ in order to start certain VMs and to stop every VM running when system is halted. Is this really the simplest and most secure approach?
Actually I couldn't find very much on this subject in user manual or googlin' around.

Fedora :: VirtualBox Guests Hang After Kernel Update / Sort This?

Aug 7, 2010

After updating to kernel-2.6.33.6-147.fc13.x86_64 (and updating all kmods) VirtualBox guests no longer boot.

I had a Windows guest (from now on refereed as Crapdows) that worked normally. After the update, I could get to the "Start Windows Normally" screen, but then Crapdows refused to boot. At first, I thought it was a crappy M$ bug, but after creating another VM (Doublecrap), and starting from scratch, I was able to get to the "Windows is loading files" screen, and then the guest hangs again.
This problem is generalized to all OS'es I've tried. In Ubuntu, I can get to the language selection screen before the installation freezes. The same applies for Fedora and SUSE guests.

Is it time to get my hammer?

Debian Multimedia :: Virtualbox GUI Is Black Or Night Mode - Guests Boot OK

Oct 17, 2015

I posted this over in the VirtualBox forums but was directed to the debian forums as it was the debian fork.VBoxManage and all virtualbox GUI elements are black with white text ("night mode" in other apps) with no borders or other useful Gui bits. Apparently the board image quota is reached (?) but you can see it here: URL...All the guests work, it's just this GUI issue.

Code: Select allii  virtualbox                             4.3.30-dfsg-1+deb8u1                 amd64        x86 virtualization solution - base binaries

vbox-install log on other board,I upgraded from Debian 7 stable to Debian 8 stable. I haven't used virtualbox in a long time, so maybe I somehow did this myself, but I'm not sure where that is if I did.

I couldn't find anything else in /var/log that would be useful. It's across all users. I checked the launch scripts /usr/bin/virtualbox, /usr/bin/ vbox manage, and /var/lib/virtualbox/*

Ubuntu :: Set-up Virtualbox To Auto-run Upon Startup?

Jul 10, 2010

Is there a way to set-up Virtualbox to auto-run upon startup.

I am working on my mothers computer and she has to have Windows for Internet Explorer. The websites she has to go on for work require IE6+, and there are a couple programs she has to run that only works with windows may work with Wine.

But she wants something more stable than windows... She has really bad luck when it comes to Windows, so I was talking to her about Ubuntu. After thinking everything over, If I could get her computer to startup with Virtualbox and run Win XP in it all her problems may be solved. She has 2 computers so I can play with one of them to figure it all out and she can play and learn Ubuntu.

Software :: Samba Refuses To Start On Startup - But Will Start Manually

Apr 14, 2009

I just moved my / from sda1 to an ide drive, hde1. i dont see how this could have caused any of these issues, but it did.

First my network card failed to start. i added a line in my rc.local file (where i put all of my additional programs, etc i want to start):/etc/rc.d/rc.inet1

The above now starts my network card with my static ip configured. dhcpcd also worked but i wanted this static.

Now samba will not start. i have the following line in my rc.local: /etc/rc.d/init.d/samba start

This used to work just fine. at first i thought that samba may be trying to start before my network card gets an ip, but the line is *after* the network startup line. just to make sure, i made an additional script called startsamba which contained a sleep 60 followed by samba start, to delay the startup of samba even further.

The message samba reports is very vague, something like failed - core dumped. most of the core dump log is garbage characters, but here is the beginning which seems like it might contain some info:

Code:

ERROR: Can't log to stdout (-S) unless daemon is in foreground (-F) or interactive (-i) after the system starts, i can drop to a console and type "/etc/rc.d/init.d/samba start" and the service starts just fine. i've also tried starting samba manually with "smbd -d" which also produces the core dump when started from rc.local, but not when started from a console after startup.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: Unable To Start VirtualBox Kernel Modules - Error Stopping VirtualBox Kernel Modules

Mar 23, 2011

I was trying to install VirtualBox through the YaST > Software Management but it is not working, someone in the forum told me that I have to download the OSE version and do it manual way. Finally I am able to start up VB but not able to use the network connection. Thus I am trying to do this:

/etc/init.d/vboxdrv setup. I get this error:

[code]...

When I type dmesg, it shows me a bunch of info which I don't know what should look for. When I type modprobe vboxnetflt, I get the error: FATAL: Error inserting vboxnetflt (/lib/modules/2.6.37.1-1.2-default/updates/vboxnetflt.ko): Invalid module format. what should I do in order to get my VB to be able to connect to the internet?

Ubuntu Networking :: Freeze-ups At Startup And Shutdown?

Nov 12, 2010

Running Lucid 10.04 in place of XP on my old Packard Bell Imedia has been good apart from the random freeze-ups that often prevent booting or stall the shutdown process. Today I think I solved it!? It appears that my wireless PCI adapter (ZyXel G-302 v3) was causing the problem. Ubuntu had installed a default driver which seemed to work OK; but I thought I'd try installing the Windows XP driver from my original ZyXel install disk as an experiment. I used ndiswrapper, got the XP driver installed and my freeze-ups have gone (touch wood).

Ubuntu :: Forced Shutdown, Now Freezing On Startup Screen?

Sep 9, 2010

I have a Toshiba Laptop Satellite L355-S7905 Intel Celeron Processor 585 @ 2.16 Ghz, Mobile Intel GL40 Express Chipset. 4GB of Memory, 160 GB HD. Tri-boot: Windows 7, Unbutu 10.04 and Fedora 12.

Here is what happened: I had a hard/forced shutdown while using Ubuntu 10.04. Some warning text flashed on the screen before it went blank and I could not read it. Now when I turn on my laptop it freezes on the Toshiba set up screen. I can not go to the F2 setup, I can not go to the F12 boot seqence and I can not use F8 safe mode. Also the ESC button had no effect.

I have tried turning it on with the Win 7 cd in the drive but nothing. The same when I put my Ubuntu 10.04 cd in the drive, nothing. My guess is that the forced shutdown messed up the bootfile/grub order. The harddrive runs for a few seconds then stops. Should I attack the problem from a Windows view point or a Ubuntu view point?

General :: Graphics Card - Graphical Corruption During Startup And Shutdown?

Jan 16, 2010

For the last month, when starting up or shutting down my laptop under Linux, I would get graphical corruption. Startup has an colour inverted, grainy rendition of what should be displayed while shutdown has a red background with all the text replaced by grey rectangles.

At the very least this affects Fedora, Ubuntu and Xubuntu. Windows is not affected. Outside of startup/shutdown the system is fine.

The startup and shutdown displays are a series of vertical black and white lines, and the text displayed on them appears as more or less white blobs. Otherwise, the displays when 11.04 is running are fine, but this startup looks so naff it would be nice to change it so that the diplays can be read. I would hate to demonstrate Ubuntu to someone and have to explain such a display.

Ubuntu :: VirtualBox Guest Attempts To Mount Shared Folders Twice At Startup?

May 1, 2010

Moved to virtualization forum: [URL].. I just upgraded my Ubuntu VirtualBox guest to Lucid. My host machine shares two folders with the guest. I have them listed in my /etc/fstab so they're automatically mounted:

share /mnt/share vboxsf defaults 0 0 For some reason, it looks like Ubuntu attempts to mount these shared folders twice. The first time, the mount doesn't succeed, but the second time, it does, so by the time I actually log in, the shares work properly.

Karmic would just print an error message at boot, but now Lucid makes me press a key to continue booting when the mount fails. Ideally, I'd like to figure out how to make the first mount attempt work properly. But if that's complicated, just disabling Lucid's prompt would make me happy.
