Software :: Using SED To Strip Multiple Leading Hash Symbols From A File?

I have a quirky situation whereby I'm using SED to selectively comment out a line in a crontab job (on Solaris, I know but it's connected to the Linux function I'm working with).
What's happening is this.
Remove hash symbol
Code:
/opt/csw/bin/gsed -i '/^.*/usr/local/scripts/mirror-fix.sh.*/ s/^#//' $TEMPFILE
Restore hash symbol
Code:
/opt/csw/bin/gsed -i '/^.*/usr/local/scripts/mirror-fix.sh.*/ s/^/#/' $TEMPFILE
The problem I'm running into is that the script can sometimes prepend an extra hash # symbol if run more than once (I have a lockfile that I poll for to discourage this, but that's not perfect).
I wonder how I can modify that sed statement to remove any/all leading hash marks up to the first other character, in this case it's a 0 (zero) which is a crontab file.

By issuing the 'nm' command on shared library (internally using one static library), the functions exposed by static library is also being listed, Which allows to use internal functions which is of course not intended. I have one static library having A(), B() and C() functions. Creating one shared library which has function XYS() that is using A() and B() functions from Static library. While doing 'nm' on shared library, all the static library function are being listed.

I'm thinking of a few ways to do this I'm curious how many better/equal ways there are to do the same task.in a file with format like: 20 text Gi0/2 some other junk I have it reformatted to look like this before going in a database: 0/2 20 text. But for whatever reason some of the new input text looks like this now: 20 text Gi1/0/2 some other junk
My script makes it look like this: 1/0/2 20 text. I want it to remove the leading number and slash if the input file is in the new format.

Is there any utility that can provide a list of all files, and both the file size and md5 hash value. Preferably also including other hash values.I've got 1.5 TB of files to go through, and delete duplicates..Neither fdupes or fslint are up to the task --- both claim files to be duplicates, when they definately are not. (Movies, and OOo documents are not identical, even if one is the script for the other, which in this case is not the case. Both fdupes and fslint claimed that those two files were identical. (And yes, I did look at them.

I have Ubuntu 9.10 installed and up to date.
I have an HP Laserjet 2200 connected via USB with 64MB of memory. When I print page 2 of this document (for example) [URL] the delta-symbol and minus-signs do not show up, although I see them in Adobe reader version 9.3.
I have tried several of the available drivers for the printer (including the "[recommended]" one) and none of them produce these symbols.
I'm guessing this is a font issue. I don't know how to show you what font stuff I have installed.

Used to work perfectly. I attempted to install VPN client, result is can't connect to anything. Networks are seen by network manager, nothing happens when click connect. Results below:

I'm trying to strip down a 9.10 installation, which is destined to sit in the attic and act as a file/download server. Using Webmin (which is the greatest thing I have seen on Ubuntu, it rocks) I notice that the BIND process is using 5MB of memory, on an idle machine. Do I need this installed on a desktop machine ? Can folks suggest anything else I can disable/uninstall for a machine. I'm using neatx to connect to it, and Vuze as a torrent client.

I have some text based reports in which I would like to strip the "Current Date" from and replace with equivalent number of empty spaces, for every occurrence.For example, here is what I need to strip:

If I manually run the following SED command, it works great, however I cannot seem to find a way to use the actual "date" command within SED, to get the desired results.
WORKING: sed -i -e 's/Date: 11/09/09/ /' myfile
I've been messing around with various attempts to do this using the "date" command within SED, but I just can seem to get it right. I've also attempted defining variables which call separate "date" commands for day, month, year and inject them via standard variable calling, echoing variable, expanding variable with brackets, etc... Here are a few of the SED command attempts I've tried:

I'm trying to put together a script that will quickly run through an archive directory of log files that are named by day of the month 01.gz, 02.gz, 03.gz.... 31.gz. The script uses gunzip -c | grep | wc to count up the total number of hourly occurrences of a filename and outputs the results to stdout.
The only snag I have left is the octal limit when it gets to 08 and 09. I've seen examples using perl and awk, but this script uses a number of nested for loops and if statements that I don't want to have to rewrite in a different syntax. I found that I can use num=10#08 to set that variable to a base 10 instead of a base 8, but then I lose the leading 0 again when it passes the number to the next filename variable.

I found a script that counts down to a date and time and after modifying my .conkyrc file I want things to line up nicely, so, now I need leading zeroes on the output, like one timer I have says "4m +2w 5d 20:0:0" and I want it to say "04m 02w 05d 20:00:00" and on a slightly separate issue, it doesn't seem to be counting the minutes and seconds correctly, but that can be dealt with later, the current script is

Out of the box, Bash in 10.04 is configured such that it won't expand/complete parameters when there's a single match for a parameter with a leading wildcard. For example, if I have the following files in a directory:

ABC.bin
DEF.bin
GHI.bin
...and I type cp *E*, I expect to be able to press TAB and have Bash expand *E* to DEF.bin, since that's the only file in the directory with a capital E in its name.
(Note: if I actually submit the command with the wildcards in place, the correct file will be used then, but I don't get to see it beforehand.) I imagine there's something in /etc/bash_completion that's preventing this from working properly. Does anyone know what it is?

I'm trying to insert a line using sed that has leading spaces before the text. Sed seems to be just dropping the spaces and only inserting the text. Any ideas what I'm missing?

Instead of inserting a line with 8 leading spaces inserts it with "host" at the beginning of the line. I tried

I'm having some difficulties with the comic strip widget that I use to keep me updated on Dilbert. It started out in ok-ish size, a little small, but readable. Now the entire strip takes up 3x3 cm, totally unreadable. Is there anyway to fix that?

I'm currently using mogrify -strip image.jpg to remove unwanted bytes from images, it was suggested I could remove further data by using jpegran from libjpeg, something like:
jpegtran -copy none -optimize -outfile image.jpg image.jpg
The problem I'm having - if it even is a problem - is that jpegtran doesn't seem to actually do anything that mogrify isn't already doing. In all my testing the filesize just stays the same. If I remove the mogrify part of my code and replace with jpegtran then it seems to perform the same function.
For example:
image without compression: 300k
image with mogrify -strip + jpegtran: 272k
image with mogrify -strip only: 272k
image with jpegtran only: 272k
I was under the impression though that mogrify just removed image profiles/comments and that jpegtran did this as well as losslessly compressing the image to make it smaller. Am I missing something?

I'm trying to get a minimalCD installation on a flashdrive but the installation never finishes... (i've left the installation runnin overnight for over 12hrs and only 90 percent got completed; whenever trying to retrive packages from the internet the process slows down to a crawl; i've tried ext4, ext3, ext2 and resierfs)normal Desktop insatallation works fine; so I was wondering if there is anyway to strip all the packages off a normal installation to get it to minimal installation, and than start installing the pacakges i need?

If I click the mouse anywhere inside firefox browser window I get a big black strip and it blink on and off. I've noticed in Ubuntu that a lot of applications like to make use of the strip of menus that go at the top of the screen; I think it's called a menu strip in Visual Studios.Anyways, the only way I can see it (that I've figured out thus far) is to drag the window to the top of my screen, thus maximizing it, then use the menu, and put it back.What I want is a less... tedious way of accessing those commands, preferably without changing my window position. Is there a trick to it? In windows, unlike Ubuntu, that strip is available regardless of window size; is there a reason it disappears in my Ubuntu?

I need to rename some files. They are named:
NP1-1.mp3
NP1-2.mp3
NP1-3.mp3

However, as there is no lead 0, the order gets confused by some software (some software mistakenly lists it as NP1-1.mp3, then NP1-10.mp3). I'd like to add zeros so the files are named like this:
NP1-0001.mp3
NP1-0002.mp3
NP1-0003.mp3
[code]...
How can that be done?

I have a script that calls for a file description on a core file. I then pull the name of the process that caused the core file.
unfortunately, the process name is pulled with a leading ' amd a tailing'. I would like to remove the leading char and the last char.

How do I make getchar() skip a leading space? The situation I am looking is this: I print a prompt that ends in a space printf("Input: ");and then when I use getchar() to read the text that was typed after the prompt, it appears to process the trailing space as a leading space that belongs to the input.
how can the space be skipped, preferably without inserting code that explicitly checks whether I'm reading the first character or not. I have already found out that I can skip such a space using scanf scanf (" %c", &ch); where the leading space in the format string eliminates leading spaces from the input string. That is the sort of thing I have in mind.

Summary: dhclient doesn't strip or escape certain shell meta-characters in dhcpd responses, allowing a rogue server or party with with escalated privileges on the server to cause remote code execution on the client.

ISC dhclient did not strip or escape certain shell meta-characters in responses from the dhcp server (like hostname) before passing the responses on to dhclient-script. Depending on the script and OS, this can result in execution of exploit code on the client.

Workarounds:
On SUSE systems, it is possible to disable hostname update by setting DHCLIENT_SET_HOSTNAME="no" in /etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp.
Other systems may add following line to dhclient-script at the beginning of the set_hostname() function:
In environments where filters/acls can be put into place to limit clients to accessing only legitimate dhcp servers, this will protect clients from rogue dhcp servers deliberately trying to exploit this bug.
However, this will not protect from compromised servers.
