Programming :: Convert An Arbitrary Binary File Into A Executable File?
Feb 18, 2010In a project I'm working on with a few other people, I got the task of writing an assembler. The last thing I do is convert the commands into a binary representation, and jam it into a file. Now one of my teammates said he'd like to be able to "reference" the code within another program. He said he'd be able to do this if the file I output is a Linux object file. I'm thinking it'd also work as an executable. Anyway, he said he'd like to be able to grab the file and reference the binary by address. I'm still fuzzy on this, and if you're confused with what I said here, please tell me so I can ask him for better details.Anyway, I'm aware that gcc can compile files to ".o", but that's only for C/C++, and my file is just binary. I'm also aware of "ld", but I haven't seen any use of it to help me. I'm happy to hear suggestions as to what I can do. If anything, I think I'll implement a few functions to grab the bits and hand them to him in an array or something.

Apr 5, 2010By issuing the 'nm' command on shared library (internally using one static library), the functions exposed by static library is also being listed, Which allows to use internal functions which is of course not intended. I have one static library having A(), B() and C() functions. Creating one shared library which has function XYS() that is using A() and B() functions from Static library. While doing 'nm' on shared library, all the static library function are being listed.

dumpbin /imports FILE.EXE
or using the depends utility which is GUI application.
`nm ELF-binary' just returns "no symbols".

Mar 23, 2011The Linux ldd command can show the dynamic libraries used by an executable. It's a bash script.But it seems to be fragile, and does not work on some binaries. Is there an alternative tool? In my specific example, I can use:

but ldd fails with:

i can do it, for example, in emacs (hexl-mode), but interesting in writing a script instead. it will be much more better for me if i could do it automatically. is there an analog of: sed 's/string1/string2/g' ? P.S. the best way is to recompile the binary files i have, but there are no sources available.

Apr 15, 2011I want to be able to disassemble a binary file, modify the assembly source, then assemble the modified assembly source back into a modified binary file. Purpose for this is pretty much just to play around with the Crackmes (www.crackmes.de) game.
Now, disassembly is easy, there are several tools that do it, including the standard objdump with the -d argument. However, how would you assemble an assembly source file created with objdump -d? GCC for sure doesn't want to assemble it in that format. What program, script, or arguments to GCC (none that I can think of) can be used to accomplish this? If someone also has some good tips for tools in general for Crackmes beyond what is standard in GNU/Linux I'd love to hear about it.

Jan 9, 2011I have a binary file, which I need to process using my C++ application. Only thing I know is first chunk of the file is long, second chunk is int, third chunk is char etc... The binary file actually contains something like below. (which is represented in hex base).
D7 07 00 00 00 00 00 00 37 18 00 00 DE 07 ............ so on.....
I need to procees the file in the following way.
* I know the first data segment in my file is long. So it takes 4 bytes.
* so I need to read the first four bytes. That is D7 07 00 00.
* Then I need to reverse this as 00 00 07 D7.
* Finally I need to get the decimal value of above hexa decimal line. ( 00 00 07 D7)
* i.e. 00 00 07 D7 (in hex) = 7D7 (in hex- after removing leading 0 s) = 2007 (in decimal)
Like wise I need to process the whole file.

Oct 4, 2010I am trying to use a software package written in ANSI C. It has a makefile which has to be executed first.
As soon as I execute it I get messages like: line i: command not found.
Commands for which I am getting errors :

GCCFLAGS = -c -Wall
ROOTDIR = .
My gcc compiler is located in the above directory only. In ROOTDIR also I tried giving the path in which all the required files & folders are present but still I get the command not found error in all the lines.

The binaries code has to know how to find it and so on. I imagine that the applications binary uses a system call and that another application takes over.

My question is whether the above code is portable. I presume it is, since the result is a binary PPM file which should be capable of being read across multiple computers with different architectures and different operating systems. But at the same time, all that the above code is doing is just saving the binary representation of unsigned chars on the harddrive, and there does not seem to be any reason why the binary representations of the unsigned chars will be identical across multiple computers.

I have Wine installed, but I can not open the file as it is blocked from executing with a window popping up telling me that this file was blocked due to security reasons. I go into the files properties and try to change the permission but that does not help. Is there a way to get around this? Possibly in the terminal as root?

Oct 19, 2010I'm running gdb across a network using gdb server. I've got it up and running. However I can't see any source or variables for my code (in ddd /gdb). At start up gdb says (no debugging symbols found). I've got a g in my make file,

I've tried loading symbols in using "symbol-file testarm", this sort of works in that I can view symbols but not names, e.g. if I ask dd to show x y and z, rather than

Also ddd does not show anything in the source window, is there a way I can get it to show this? I think it's because I've started ddd with ddd arm-linux-gdb, as I'm calling a crosscompiler gdb. So can I tell ddd to point to the correct folders? What commands I need to set in gdb/ddd to view variable names (it's hard to keep track when it bunches them all together) and how to view my source code.

As you might see, each nonterminal creates a Node* object and uses it as its value. The problem is that the literal tokens, however, don't return Node*'s and I don't know what to do. I would like to be able to convert literal tokens to nodes in the Lex file (which would avoid the problem), but the problem is with the assignment operator, which takes a Node* for the right-hand side and a variable name (not a Variable Node, because they just evaluate the the variable's value and you can't change the variable with them) for the left hand side.
