View 1 RepliesI'm using Linux Mint Helena and my software sources seems outdated. I keep getting the error:
Code:
Could not download all repository indexes The repository may no longer be available or could not be contacted because of network problems. If available an older version of the failed index will be used. Otherwise the repository will be ignored. Check your network connection and ensure the repository address in the preferences is correct.

Can I link to repositories which my system is not configured to, for example, could I include all the latest Debian, Ubuntu and Linux Mint 10 respositories (even though Iḿ using Linux Mint 8?
The only MS program I need on my computer is Word 2007 for the equation editor to write/edit files from work. So after installing Wine I installed MSOffice2007. Excel worked OK (although I don't need it - I am perfectly happy with the Libre Office spreadsheet). Word however froze each time so I tried to uninstall and reinstall it. However I always got an error message when trying to uninstall with Wine. So I followed the advice of some strands in this forum and deleted the Program Files folder from the ~.wine directory. However the menus are still in Wine/Programs/Microsoft Office even though they lead to nowhere. I tried to reinstall but still I nothing happened. I presume the old entries still lead to the position where previously the .exe files were located. Now my question is either how can I remove these menu entries and try installing again - or even better - is there a Linux programme that can read/edit the equations written in Word 2007?

View 7 Replies View RelatedI've been downloading some programs in Synaptic and adding PPA like it's Christmas, and two days ago noticed one of my wine games disappeared just like that, from the C Drive folder. Didn't think much about it and just copied it back in (I had a backup on a different partition). Also later that day wine disappeared and needed reinstalling. Now yesterday I decided to upgrade OpenOffice to 3.2.1 and went through the "tutorial" and uninstalled all the associated packages and installed the newer version. Gwenview and Gedit disappeared as well, needing a reinstall.
Now I log on today and Pidgin and Thunderbird are gone.I'm really not sure what could be going on, I mean it all seems unrelated. Why would reinstalling OpenOffice mess up everything else?So this is more of a nuisance than a problem, because when I reinstall the programs the settings are as I left them.
Everything works fine; No problems running WinXP from an ISO, etc. I have several Windows only applications which I want to run on the WinXP VM. I cannot see the programs I have downloaded when using Explorer for Windows.Ordinarily, in a WinXP only system, I just find the program to be installed and double click on it to start the automatic installation routine. In this case, I cannot see any of the .exe files used for the install.I have placed those downloaded Windows application in the same directory on my Ubuntu Box as where VirtualBox, the Sun Guest Editions and the CD Image of the Garmin Trip and Map system.I installed the Garmin system directly from and ISO of the CD I made using Brasero. It works without a hitch.Should I take the Windows e.e programs and burn them to a CD and then transfer them as ISO tback to the VM drive?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have been using Ubuntu Wubi for a few weeks now and am quite happy with it, and I am not missing Windows 7. This is not my first contact with Linux OS. In fact I have tinkled with Red Hat, SuSe and Fedora quite a few years back but never pursued them seriously as I found them difficult to use. Many people seem to be saying that "if you want to uninstall Ubuntu, just go to Windows Control Panel and uninstall Wubi like you would any other application and it will remove Wubi " But what if I wanted to uninstall Windows 7 and leave Ubuntu on the hard disk? Would I need to start from square one and re-install Ubuntu again?

When I uninstall it like this: "yum remove xmms", then yum removes this package, but, when I check "yum list | grep xmms" I get full list of other packages like bluecurve-xmms-skin.noarch, gkrellxmms2.x86_64, gxmms2.x86_64 , ...
I want to cleanly remove the xmms, so I should remove all this packages "manually"? Is there a method to check wich packages are not used by any program on my computer and remove them? Or any method to remove all packages with a program automatic?
I had a dual boot system with Ubuntu and Mint. I needed more space on the HDD and decided to remove Mint. This went well and I now only have Ubuntu on the HDD. The problem is that when I boot up I still get the selection to choose whether I want to boot with Ubuntu or with Mint. I now want to remove this option from the boot list so that I can boot directly into Ubuntu automatically.

To my topic: "Software-center" hangs forever when I try to browse non-installed packages. A search on this forum shows that it's probably a non-solvable bug. No problem, I use Synaptic and am very willing to learn CLI apt-get commands. But for now, uninstalling software-center through Synaptic also wants to uninstall gnome (I assume "all of it"?), and I'm not going to agree on that!
When using "Add/remove software" application, I only can check packagesh are not installed, I can't choose installed packages which I want to remove, there is no check box in front of their names. So now I have to remove packages with yum. How can I remove packages in this GUI application

I installed F13 from the live cd and after it completed I created my user name and then rebooted. Once I logged in I went to Administration -> add/remove program. I then clicked on package collections and ticked off the ones that I wanted. I then clicked on the APPLY button and I noticed that in the lower left corner of the screen (below the left panel and just above the Help button) it said Running and then nothing. If I attempt to close the screen it says that all selections will be lost. I also went back and set the filter to list "all installed" and the programs that I had selected were in the list.I then decided to try the dvd iso, so I blew everything away and installed F13 from there, but I encountered the same thing. So I'm at a loss what I'm doing incorrectly

However, when I try to get more programs it says that it cannot find the sources, and a cache reload will fix it.
