Ubuntu :: Uninstalling Windows 7 - Remove Wubi?
Jun 8, 2010
I have been using Ubuntu Wubi for a few weeks now and am quite happy with it, and I am not missing Windows 7. This is not my first contact with Linux OS. In fact I have tinkled with Red Hat, SuSe and Fedora quite a few years back but never pursued them seriously as I found them difficult to use. Many people seem to be saying that "if you want to uninstall Ubuntu, just go to Windows Control Panel and uninstall Wubi like you would any other application and it will remove Wubi " But what if I wanted to uninstall Windows 7 and leave Ubuntu on the hard disk? Would I need to start from square one and re-install Ubuntu again?

My desktop has been running both windows and ubuntu for a couple of months via wubi. The plan is to eventually migrate fully to ubuntu though. Simple question, I hope, is it easy to effectively remove the windows side so that I don't have to make a new reinstall of ubuntu from scratch?

I am having some problems uninstalling wubi. Its not in the uninstall programs or coming up and a boot option when i boot my computer anymore. So i went out and downloaded the newest version, and tried to install it. Cause i thought that it had been removed maybe by anti-virus or something. When i clicked on it to install it said i had a previous version that i had to uninstall. So i clicked OK. It started to uninstall and then i got an error message. I tried it again and got the some error message.

The only MS program I need on my computer is Word 2007 for the equation editor to write/edit files from work. So after installing Wine I installed MSOffice2007. Excel worked OK (although I don't need it - I am perfectly happy with the Libre Office spreadsheet). Word however froze each time so I tried to uninstall and reinstall it. However I always got an error message when trying to uninstall with Wine. So I followed the advice of some strands in this forum and deleted the Program Files folder from the ~.wine directory. However the menus are still in Wine/Programs/Microsoft Office even though they lead to nowhere. I tried to reinstall but still I nothing happened. I presume the old entries still lead to the position where previously the .exe files were located. Now my question is either how can I remove these menu entries and try installing again - or even better - is there a Linux programme that can read/edit the equations written in Word 2007?

I've installed yesterday xmms and now I want to uninstall it. I've done it with yum. When I uninstall it like this: "yum remove xmms", then yum removes this package, but, when I check "yum list | grep xmms" I get full list of other packages like bluecurve-xmms-skin.noarch, gkrellxmms2.x86_64, gxmms2.x86_64 , ...
I want to cleanly remove the xmms, so I should remove all this packages "manually"? Is there a method to check wich packages are not used by any program on my computer and remove them? Or any method to remove all packages with a program automatic?

I have two computers. One has to stay Windows the other is Ubuntu. I had installed Ubuntu as a wubi install on that windows machine. I uninstalled via add/remove programs but the loader is still there. How do I get rid of that? It's not a big issue cause I just set Windows as the first boot whith a 3 second time so it loads right up. Just want to know how.

I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10 within Windows Vista to try it out I have since tried to uninstall it but the uninstall fails with a message saying it is unable to find the file it is attempting to delete - sysout=. The process has produced a fairly large text log of the procedure and the error but none of it means anything to me.

I just got a new laptop for school work and I've loaded Ubuntu onto it without issue. Now I'd like to free up some space on my desktop to use it primarily as a gaming computer. I had Windows 7 installed long before I installed Ubuntu and I figured that uninstalling Ubuntu would be as simple as just deleting the hard drive partition but I can't see the partition in My Computer like I thought I would and when I googled how to do it I kept hearing people talk about Grub, which I have completely no understanding of. I just want to delete Ubuntu without harming the programs I have installed on my Windows partition.

i had windows 7 pre-installed in my laptop. i installed ubuntu 11.04 by making a bootable disk and did the partitioning so that both windows and ubuntu boot options would come on startup. however , when i switch on the laptop . the options do not come and ubuntu boots as if it is the default. i thought this might be due to a problem with grub 2 so i re-installed it. yet there was no difference. i want to uninstall ubuntu now. but how do it? most guides require me to access windows and create a rescue disk and changing the MBR. but since i cant access my windows partition this isnt an option. so there are 2 options for me - to make grub detect windows during boot and then use windows to make the MBR rite or to delete the system files of ubuntu to make it unbootable?

I installed Backtrack 4 and it is set up as a dual boot with my Windows 7 x64 bit. I want to uninstall Backtrack because I am going to put it on a different computer. The problem is - I can't do it. My laptop is an Asus K61IC, and it doesn't come with an installation CD, because the OS was factory installed. It comes with a recovery wizard instead, which gives me the options to 1) recover to first partition only, 2) recover to entire HD, and 3) recover to entire HD with 2 partitions. Because of Grub and it asking for me to choose what operating system to boot when I start my computer, when I recover Windows 7 to the entire HD and try to boot, it gives me Grub error 22. I need to fix my MBR so that the grub menu is also deleted and all of Backtrack 4 is removed, actually letting me back onto my Windows 7. I need a way to delete the Linux partition, and fix the MBR, but I don't know how to do that because I don't have an installation disk.

Been using Debian Squeeze for a few days now and I think it's a SUPERB distro. Everything works perfectly.
To my topic: "Software-center" hangs forever when I try to browse non-installed packages. A search on this forum shows that it's probably a non-solvable bug. No problem, I use Synaptic and am very willing to learn CLI apt-get commands. But for now, uninstalling software-center through Synaptic also wants to uninstall gnome (I assume "all of it"?), and I'm not going to agree on that!

I got BSOD while attempting to uninstall a program in Win XP, so I tried to reinstall the OS (because the guy who gave me the pc wants a clean-up) but a STOP 0x0000007F (0x00000008, 0x80042000, 0x00000000, 0x00000000) occurs.I tried then to boot Kubuntu 9.04 live cd, and it booted fine, but when I tried an installation it failed too: just crashing...
I tried to change the RAM and the hard drives to no avail.I'm thinking that it's an hardware failure, but can't track it down: what could it be? Video card? Motherboard?
EDIT: I ran 7 successful memtest - not even an error. I have to look at the harddisk ribbons and the motherboard.
EDIT No.2: I tried another harddrive, switching to sata connectors to no avail: the sata harddisk it isn't even recognized...Can it be the video card, or it will be the Motherboard?

I am preparing to install Ubuntu server to run the server I am building. Both the server and Ubuntu are new to me. In preparation to this I installed Wubi on my Windows 7 laptop. It installed nicely and works smoothly. Unfortunately when I went back into W7 it has crashed 5 times in a row. Sometimes I got 5 minutes into the running of windows. The last time it crashed before I could even log in. I am unable to determine what is going on as i can't get around in my Windows for very long. Fortunately the Ubuntu side of my computer is still working well.
My W7 install is on a smaller partition (80GB). Would the Wubi installed on this same partition and maybe crowding the W7 install? Should I create another partition to install the Wubi onto or just install a Ubuntu on a separate partition? How should i go about troubleshooting this?

I've just installed Ubuntu after my windows os became completely infested with trojans and viruses. How do I get rid off windows? I can't get rid off the viruses because I can't install an anitvirus for some reason. It's still there when I start up the computer. I don't think I'm using grub, though I'm not completely sure. Is there a way to verify this? On a similar note, can the trojans and virus affect on windows affect ubuntu?

So, I converted a Vista user by enticing her with WUBI. She's a computer idiot, and she thinks Linux is great.
HOWEVER, she recently had Ubuntu muck up for her, so she uninstalled WUBI/Ubuntu and reinstalled it (9.10). Upon restart, GRUB presented no boot menu and went straight into Ubuntu. The funny thing is, under the GRUB configuration files, the timeout for the boot menu is set to 10. I tried the following (made sure to change the boot device to hda1,0 since fdisk shows her NTFS as /dev/sdb1):
[URL]
No luck. No boot menu, no Windows option. I also tried the following:
Manual Windows Entry (with /etc/grub.d/30_os-prober made unexecutable)
Code:
#! /bin/sh -e
echo "Adding Windows 43_custom" >&2
menuentry "Windows Vista 43_custom" {
insmod ntfs
[Code]....
Using THIS method, the boot loader did appear, but there was no Windows option. Odd. So, I'm at a blocking point. Yes, I was smart enough to run update-grub Thoughts? My replies may be a bit delayed - she's 2 hours away and I don't have direct access to her computer.
