View 1 RepliesI got a new Sony Vaio Z and try to install Ubuntu on it. The laptop has got two 64 GB SSDs setup as a RAID 0 array. [URL]. As the configuration is done in the BIOS, I assume it's hardware RAID. [URL]. The problem is that - no matter what I try - the installers are unable to write the GRUB loader on the hard disk. I tried both, standard and alternate installer (9.10 / 64 bit), and both failed at that point. Not a really error message, it just says "cannot write GRUB boot loader".
I also tried two different scenarios:
- Ubuntu beside Windows (shrinked the partition for that)
- Ubuntu on the empty RAID
Since ugprading today to a fresh install of Xubuntu 11.04 I am unable to open .exe's through Thunar my file manager with 'WINE Program Loader'
Wine 1.2.2.
When I try to i receive the error:
Quote:
The file '/media/DUMP/Downloads/anything.exe' is not marked as executable. If this was downloaded or copied from an untrusted source, it may be dangerous to run. For more details, read about the executable bit.
When I check the permissions tab of properties there is no option to make it executable as per screenshot.
Also using chmod +x doesn't change anything but I am able to open .exe using WINE in the terminal but I would rather I did not have to do this every time I use WINE.
I have no intention of using mIRC, it was just a small windows installer I downloaded for testing.
I installed ubuntu using wubi and then I tried installing grub 2 but it failed. I need a way to reinstall the mbr sp it will load the windows 7 loader from the first partition.
View 1 Replies View RelatedA failed upgrade, from disk images, of Fedora 10 to 11 resulted in no GRUB bootloader main menu appearing on bootup (no WIN, no LINUX choices from which to boot). I am booted directly into the GRUB command shell...so, no WIN, no LINUX, nothing. And my understanding of GRUB shell commands is very low.I have 2 hard disks, WIN on the first, LINUX on the second. I believe GRUB Bootloader is on the first disk.Sadly, I have no external install media. An old grub.conf hardcopy indicates that root =/dev/sdb2, root (hd1,0), kernel /vmlinuz....olderversion...(relative to /boot),initrd /initrd...olderversion... (relative to boot). and WINDOWS on (hd0,1), with chainloader +1
I need to somehow get past this grub shell, and re-install/re-instate the grub bootloader, so it can boot normally. What grub command(s) must I use? I've played around with the commands, but with no success.I worry that if I can't resolve this, the whole machine may be useless.
I am unable to change the installation location for the boot loader when installing Fedora 12 in the graphical installation mode. The 'Change device' button does nothing when I click on it during installation. I'd like to install the boot loader on my /boot partition. Is there some kind of bug that is preventing me from doing this?I am trying to install from the Fedora 12 386 DVD.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a laptop with windows vista installed on the internal hardrive.Last March I installed wanted to start to use linux so I brought a separate external hardrive partitioned it to enable media storage on one section and installed ubuntu on the other half. It works fine and so does the windows vista on my internal hardrive, however I have to have the hardrive plugged in to boot.Until now this hasnt bothered me, however I've recently started to take my laptop into university and cannot switch it off unless I have the external hardrive with me as I cannot switch it on without it.With it plugged in it loads up GRUB and then gives me the option to load either Ubuntu or windows vista, however if it is not plugged in when I power up it says GRUB loader failed. It also occured to me that if for some reason my external hardrive fails in the future I wont be able to use my laptop anymore.Has the installation of ubuntu (and GRUB) altered the MBR?
Is there some way I can edit the settings so that I can load windows vista without the hardrive plugged in, and then if it is plugged in I get the choice which one to load?
I installed Debian Lenny on a Desktop computer for my wife, and am looking for an application to manage her photos.Specifically, what I'm looking for is a way to graphically display a file of thumbnails that reside in a specific folder and allow me to rearrange the order of them them as I see fit. The altered file would then be written back to the hard drive to be viewed with any photo viewer.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for some simple to use photo editing software for KDE. I don't really need the GIMP. I just want to do some simple auto-enhancement, rotating, and resizing. Pretty simple stuff. I'm trying to install Shotwell right now. I've used it on Gnome installs, (Ubuntu refugee), but I was wondering if there is a similar native KDE application.

She tried Gimp but it is more than what she is looking for.
View 6 Replies View RelatedSimple question really. Can anyone recommend some decent photo printing software. I have tried Gnome Photo Printer and PhotoPrint.
Photoprint would be perfect, but for some reason doesn't like my printer.
Gnome Photo Printer doesn't give me the control I need over layout, or resolution, paper type, etc.
Shotwell and Gthumb don't seem to have the facility to print multiple photos in one go on a single sheet. So I am kind of stuck.
On the best photo tools. I love GIMP for photo editing, but I'm looking for alternatives to the default viewer and manager (currently Shotwell) for downloading images off my camera and organizing them.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using 10.10. The FSpot and Shotwell programs that came with 10.10 don't seem to have any good controls for adjusting slide show display of photos. Could anyone recommend a good photo slide show display program that allows one to adjust pan, display time, smooth transitions, etc.

View 5 Replies View RelatedIs there a good photo printing tool available for Debian? I have a HP ePhotosmart B110a printer and want to print photo's on glossy photo paper (10x15 cm and 13x18 cm). Which program do you people advice and why? I've been trying a couple (digikam/F-spot/Photoprint) but they didn't satisfy me. It seems that these programs lack some handy options like the tools for Windows i've been working with in the past.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a screensaver application which will show random photos from my collection, but rather than just changing between images, I'd like something which shows them in a cool way, for example, on my brother's Mac, the screensaver displays photos, but as if they're being dropped onto a surface, i.e. not always with the same orientation.
See here: [URL]
In F-Spot there's this nice function that shows a slideshow of all your photos as a screensaver. Since I've abandoned F-Spot in favor of Digikam URL...I was wondering if there is a way to do something similar in Digikam.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm unsure as to whether this is an Ubuntu problem or a Firefox problem, but here's what's going on. Whenever I attempt to upload a photo on a website (such as Facebook or Funnyjunk.com), Firefox crashes. The microsecond I click "upload", it's gone. When I restart Firefox, I have the option of restoring my previous session, as normally happens after a FF crash. Is this a documented bug? I don't recall it ever happening on Windows, and I can't seem to find anything about it.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a 3TB home server storing all my files and a mix of XP, Vista & Ubuntu clients on a Gigabit network. When I access a folder with JPEG photos on the XP or Vista machines and I have them set to display thumbnails that is exactly what I get. The thumbnails load nice and fast. When I access the same folders on the Ubuntu machines with "icon view" it only displays a black icon that says "JPG" but if I copy that folder over to a local drive on the Ubuntu machines then the thumbs display just fine. Does anyone have any idea how to change this on the Ubuntu machines so they load thumbnails for networked photos as well?
