I've done some research on the issue of blocking bittorrent traffic. What I've come up with is that it is very difficult to detect the data traffic. Tools such us ipp2p fall short because of encryption of the data between peers. What I'm thinking of (and starting to test at the same time) is to block the "single poit of failure" - the trackers. My idea is to collect a list of IP addresses of the most used trackers and block all traffic to them:

I am currently using Debian Lenny and am having problems with my pptp vpn client. I can use the following software for as long as I like without my pptp vpn connection dropping out:
(1) iceweasel
(2) icedove
(3) gtk-gnutella
If a use a bittorrent client, however, my pptp vpn connection drops out within a few minutes. I have tried these bittorrent clients: transmission, deluge, tixati. Enabling or disabling the firewall makes no difference.I have searched pptpclient.sourceforge.net and Debian User Forums but have not been able to find any suggestions on settings to change in a bittorrent client.
I tried to install vsftpd on my server and while the installation went fine, I can't run

sudo /etc/init.d/vsftpd restart with a warning telling me to use the service utility. Not only that, but despite the port being open it won't allow me to log in, it just hangs, and I have local users enabled (I've used the default .conf file). Does dbus not come installed in 10.04, and if I did install it would it make a difference for restarting the service? Are there further steps needed not available in the tutorial on the Ubuntu Server Guide for 10.04 to enabling local user authentication? -edit- Figured it out, dbus wasn't installed, vsftpd is working fine now.
I install and configure the vncserver following and reading 1000papers, but all of this present the same problem; when i try to connect to my vncserver,recive this mesage: unable connect to socket: No route to host (113) The OS version is Fedora Core 14 and tigervnc-server i try different solutions including:Allow TCP connection modifing files /etc/gdm/custom.conf and /usr/share/gdm/gdm.chemas Disable SELinux removing iptables Here follow the vncserver configuration:

I'm trying to setup PS3 media server on my new OpenSuse 11.2 and I'm being unable to connect to the PS3. The multimedia server seems to being working ok, only it has not appear on XMB.
I've been searching on PS3 Media Server forums and try a couple of solutions regarding /etc/hosts and adding full qualified domain name of server to it, but it doesn't seems to work.

I have my server connected directly to my modem which is providing me with Internet access on eth1 and is working fine. I have dhcp and dns setup on eth0 which is connected to my router. The router shows that it is connected to the Internet but when the router gives a client computer an IP address, the client is unable to connect to the Internet but can connect to the router. I just switched from Ubuntu to Fedora 13 because I was unable to get Ubuntu to connect to wireless networks. I tried everything suggested in help and forums, and kept getting "Bad Password" with WICD and Network Manager. Now, with Fedora...I still can't connect.
Problem #1: The guide says to "...make sure that the relevant wireless interface (usually eth0 or eth1) is controlled by NetworkManager," and that I do this via: System>Administration>Network
However, there is no Network option under System>Administration.
Problem #2: I open Network Manager, which displays a list of networks. I click on mine, configure it with WPA and the right password, and it fails to connect: "The network connection has been disconnected."
I couldn't connect my Micromax 300G modem in Debian Linux. From internet (in Windows Vista), I came across the information of USB_ModeSwitch and then I downloaded it. While going to install it, I came across the problem that TCL-interpreter is not available in Debian Linux. Then again I restarted my laptop in Windows Vista and connected my Micromax modem and from internet downloaded TCL8.5.10-src.tar.gz. But while going to install it, I came across the problem that " configure: error: no acceptable C compiler found in $PATH " . Also as presently, I am unable to connect my modem therefore I am unable to issue the code:" apt-get update ".

I read about port forwarding, as a way to speed up bittorent I interprete that as bundling the port series 6881 till 6999 to ferdora:6881 so all the ports are channeld to the bittorent machine and 1 port.(tcp and Udp)

I know, that this thread is old one, but I am having the same issue. It does not seem to me to be the problem of single torrent. It is more the way how much do I use my connection. If I have only 1-2 torrents, everything is ok. If I have 10, I get this problem. It is also followed by aprox. 30 secs of no internet connection. I use Deluge for downloading and my limits are set like this:
max connections: 200
max upload: 300 KiB/s
max upload slots: 5
max connection attempts per sec: 20
The connection outage is really annoying.

Also, I read that individual trackers also keep a record of a user's history, which seems likely as my client takes some time to report it to them when closing. Thus, I am wondering how this statistic is kept. How is BT able to identify a single machine, maybe in a private network, or even a single user on it? Unfortunately, Google only points me to sites telling me how to cheat programs and / or trackers, no matter what I search for, which is not what I want. So, could anyone tell me in quick words or point me to a site explaining what the underlying mechanics of the system are?
Furthermore, are there possibilities to adapt the ratio generation to your bandwidth circumstances? Unfortunately, as most people in Germany, I am connected via ADSL, which allows for great download rates, but only minimal upload, which is why it takes me forever to equalize what I downloaded. I'm trying to connect to the internet on ubuntu, but what ever i do fails. I've tried every thing i possibly can, and when all else failed, i had to come and ask. When i try to connect to the internet, it always says "unable to connect". I have no clue why. I'm choosing the default wired setting. To the side of it, it says never, so that might be the problem?

I swear Ubuntu's download pages are getting harder and harder to find things in.I help with a local LUG that holds a Clinic for Linux newbies. One of my tasks is to maintain all the latest popular distros and all the versions thereof. usually recommend Ubuntu to newcomers, but people bring all kinds of computers, many of which need Lubuntu or Xubuntu, yet others want Kubuntu, and on and on. I need all the flavors of Ubuntu.I prefer to download by torrent because it is faster with my connection. I found a page with torrents for 10.04 and 10.10 for Ubuntu desktop, alternate and server, but I'll be darned if I can find torrents for Netbook, Kubuntu, Lubuntu, Xubuntu and others.
