I'm trying to install Nvidia graphic drivers. I'm not satisfied with performance of the Nvidia repository drivers the performance is so slow compared official drivers. So i downloaded graphic drivers from Nvidia official web site. But ctrl+alt+f1-f6 not working. Only mouse pointer is disappearing. when i press f7 it's reappearing again.
I've been having an issue with switching two of my monitors' status. I've got a 19' Sceptre monitor, and a 24' Samsung SyncMaster P2450.I'm using an ATI Radeon HD 5770 graphics card. I'm using 2 DVI ports to connect the monitors.Currently, all of the icons and menu bars are appearing on the Sceptre monitor. The Sceptre monitor is also to the left of the Samsung monitor. I've looked all through the Catalyst Control Center preferences and can not find anything useful.
I'm having difficulty switching from GUI to console mode. I use ctrl-alt-f1 and the screen goes blank and I see a flashing cursor but I'm unable to do anything. I can switch back into GUI mode using ctrl-alt-f7. Also at times I see the word Ubuntu with 4 dots and 2 of them are orange if that's of any use. Like the initial boot loading screen.
I've tried going back to the default display drivers and that hasn't solved it. I'm using a CRT that's connected up to my display card via a VGA > DVI converter. *I've just checked and I can't get into recovery mode either
i've tried making the switch before, but always end up running into some trouble that has me going back to windows. i recently installed ubuntu 10.10 and everything has been going fairly smooth, i've been using it for a few weeks with no complaints. no complaints, that is, until i try to upload files... my digicam shoots movies in avi format. i have no problem uploading these files to videos from vista, it works as it should. i cannot upload anything to videos from ubuntu. whatever i try to upload fails instantly.
i also cannot upload photos to photobucket, with the same outcome. the transfer appears to start, but fails immediately afterwards. the photobucket problem has me really intrigued, since it will upload some files directly from the hard drive, but most pics on the hard drive will still fail to upload, and all files on my sd card straight out of the camera fail to upload regardless, even though the computer reads the card and the files fine locally.
I am unable to switch between the various TTY screens. I don't see that I am using the wrong keys or sequence but it wont take for some reason I don't quite understand. My /etc/init file is below though.
# inittab This file describes how the INIT process should set up # the system in a certain run-level. # Author: Miquel van Smoorenburg, <miquels@drinkel.nl.mugnet.org> # Modified for RHS Linux by Marc Ewing and Donnie Barnes # Default runlevel. The runlevels used by Mandriva Linux are: # 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this) # 1 - Single user mode # 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have networking) # 3 - Full multiuser mode # 4 - unused # 5 - X11 # 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this) .....
I am running an old kernel for my XEN VPS CENTOS 5.5 x86_64 - 2.6.18-164.el5xenI did a 'yum update kernel' but when I rebooted still the same. I have downloaded the version 'kernel-2.6.18-194.32.1.el5' I cannot find grub.conf in both etc and boot, yes grub is installed via yum.
I recently installed Ubuntu desktop, since I had been running my server as Ubuntu Server on a guest OS on Windows 7 and never really used the Windows part of the computer. Since then, I've been unable to use the mouse in a graphical environment for longer than a few minutes without it starting to act crazy. The mouse moves around normally, but won't respond to clicks (left, middle, or right) but the keyboard shortcuts still work. I'm not sure if things have changed since I last used Gnome though, but Alt+Tab is not working for me either when this happens. Sometimes, the active window is even behind another window, and isn't pulled to the foreground.
After a bit of frustrated clicking and jamming of buttons on the keyboard, sometimes the mouse kind of starts working because I'll notice a right click menu open. But, I am still unable to move windows or click on them to bring them to the foreground, and my mouse presses only work on the current window. And then, eventually, after about a minute or so, it'll stop respond again too.
I saw in one thread that someone had dead spaces where he couldn't click, so he installed and ran Gnome and that fixed it, but I tried using Ubuntu Classic and it is still giving me the same behavior. I'm actually posting this message now in links, because I can't use Firefox or Chrome well enough when it's hidden behind other windows.
I am using DELL Latitude E5510 laptop with docking station. The problem I am facing is I am not able to switch screen b/w monitor and laptop screen, I tried with fn+F8 key. Actually I have installed open SuSE11.3(Linux) operating system.
I followed the instructions on this page ([URL]) in order to secure my sshd and prevent anyone form accessing the server directly as root. Therefore I changed the "PermitRootLogin yes" to "PermitRootLogin no" and restarted sshd. After that root access was denied directly but for some reason I am unable to switch to root from any of the normal user accounts with "su -" because I keep getting the "Incorrect password" errors. I am sure that the password is correct but for some, to me unclear, reasons I am unable to access the root account over SSH from a normal user account. I also noticed that after that I lost the ability to access the server as root over SFTP. why I am unable to generally use the root account after doing the named changes to sshd_config/ I am running CentOS 5.4 with the newest update.
I have installed Fedora 14 on Vmware workstation. When I am trying to switch to runlevel S/1,Just blank window is appearing, and I have to power off it forcibly as it doesnt prompt any shell. How shall I proceed.
Having just installed fc13 and downloaded the KDE package I attempted to log out as user and back in as root, but I keep getting a message about the wrong password. This is odd as the same password works in terminal if I try to become a SuperUser. I have tried turning off SELinux to no avail. I cannot log in from cold as root, only as user.
Can the fibre channel switch in the centOS5.3 cluster edition be switched for a regular router or hub? If so how would one do this? If not why does the switch have to be fibre channel?
I am using a Fling KVM switch (by Belkin), to connect 2 computers to my monitor One computer is running XP and the other is running Linux. My wireless switching mechanism has just gone the way of the saints but Belkin has supplied a software solution for this occurrence. There is a small app called Fling (surprising) that allows me to switch from the XP machine to the Linux machine but nothing to switch back to the XP. What I need to know is there a similar app for the Linux computer. (NB I have tried Synergy but have no idea how to set it up - I've been told that synergy might work).
Whenever I try to "Switch from [username]..." I get locked screen with the options to "Leave Message", "Switch User" or "Unlock".If I click to "Switch User" the password box just disappears (as if one tried to unlock with an incorrect password). The only thing I can do is unlock the screensaver and resume my login session.I can not seem to switch users.Does anyone know why "Switch User" is not working?
While rearranging my keyboard shortcuts in the control center, I noticed that in the Desktop Switching subcategory, there are "Switch to [Next/Previous/Left/Right] Desktop" and "Switch to Next Screen." What is the difference between switching to another desktop and switching to another screen?
Is anyone using a kvm switch without any problems? I've been dealing with this for 3 years now & still haven't solved it. I've got two different kvm switches & they both have the same problem. Ubuntu no matter what version will only work correctly on the first port. The two switches I have are a 2- port trend-net & a 4 port Alluratek, they both do just monitor, keyboard & ps2 mouse. The problem is only with the monitor. The resolution is stuck at 800/600 or else it only covers part of the screen. After messing with xorg forever in Hardy I finally got it working but upgrading to 10.04 I just give up. Windows never has a problem detecting my monitor with the kvm switches but Ubuntu does.
I have a HP Mini netbook. I wanted to switch to Ubuntu but the only CD I had on hand was an old Ubuntu 9.10 cd. so I used that, since I didn't have internet access at the time. Now I do, and I want to switch over to Netbook Remix, and then upgrade to 10.04. I do not have a Thumbstick on hand, and my external CD drive does not burn cds. am I totally screwed here? How can I get this done? what exactly are the differences between the full Ubuntu, and Netbook Remix. is Netbook Remix just the full Ubuntu with a different style Desktop Environment? or is it a completely different distro, with different programs and such?
I'm changing a mobo and cpu in an older Ubuntu box and switching from 32 to 64 bit both 10.04. My question is is there a way to move my 32 bit thunderbird, firefox profiles to 64 bit. Some ideas preserving all my samba, ssh, sane etc, *sigh* Would be great too. I was thinking backup ,then restore
Currently running a Windows XP computer and an Ubuntu computer through a new TRENDnet 2-computer USB KVM switch, a wireless laser mouse and a brand new GigaWare multimedia USB keyboard. A 20-inch picture tube.
I can switch between computers using the buttons on the switch, and I can use the universal hot-key command on the Windows side to switch to Linux, but the universal command won't work on my Linux computer. The universal command is two presses of the Scroll Lock key in succession.
In Windows, the Scroll Lock light comes on, on the first press and goes off on the second, as I switch computers. In Ubuntu, the scroll lock light never lights.
The Windows computer is a 2002 model HP, 2.6 GHz Pentium 4, while this computer is similar to the K7S5A mainboard, different manufacturer, 1 GHz Athlon processor.
Any programs, commands or anything I might use on Ubuntu to determine the status of the keyboard's scroll lock, or would that more likely be a bios issue?
I'm using a 64-bit machine, and naturally everything is based on the 64-bit. However I need to get the Juniper Network Connection running, which only works for 32-bit java. How should I download the 32-bit java so that it won't interfere with other application using 64-bit java, and set the PATH so that the 32-bit java is used when I use Juniper Network.
Is this possible, I'm a noob, 1 day user. I already have the 32 Bit LIVE Cd Burned. I want to install using the same partition my 64-bit is installed on.
I have bought three different kvm switchs to connect a Win 7 and a Ubuntu 10.04 system (two different towers). After plugging in any of the KVM switchs the ubuntu system wont display correctly. It either blinks or is completely black.Because of this I researched this problem and decided to go with a manual switch. My question is if anyone has had experience with a manual switch and if adding an agp video card would hinder performance with a switch.
I had to install gtk+ today (this program i was compiling said it needed it) and i managed to get gtk+ working. but now the entire OS has switched to gtk+ (it's all grey and nasty).
Can I switch back to gtk2 without un-installing gtk+?
I have Kubuntu 10.4 cleanly transformed to Gnome (aptitude task kubuntu-desktop was removed and ubuntu-desktop installed). I want to switch off the sleep key, because I sometimes press it accidentally and the computer goes to sleep. Fortunately the sleep is correct, no applications crash, but still some network connections goes away and it is annoying and time wasting. I tried to switch it off with the power management tool, but there are only two options: sleep to memory and sleep to disk. I am sure, there was "do nothing" option in some other versions, but it isn't there.
How can I fix it? Is it possible to hack it with some "edit gnome variables directly" tool? I am experienced linux user, but not a gnome or X expert, and I don't like to solve simple problems (and I think this is a simple problem) with complicated scripting and strange hacks.
I know this isnt ubuntu but ubuntu is based on debian so when i do chvt 7 it gives me a black screen and i can then press CTRL-ALT-F1 to get back to console
if I use xset dpms force off, then the monitor sleeps only few seconds (sometimes miliseconds and then goes up again without moving mouse, ... (by itself)But it is no system problem - if the monitor is switched off from GNOME - e.g. after 10 min, then it stays sleeping up to some action (mouse, keyboard, ...).Why do it not work if switched off manually
I want to switch from Windows 7 (32-bit) to Ubuntu 10.10 (32-bit), but I can't install it on my PC for some reason. I've tried burning the .iso onto 2 or 3 different DVD+ROM discs now, I keep getting the following message when I try to install it.
Message: BusyBox v1.15.3 (Ubuntu 1:1.15.3-1ubuntu5) built-in shell (ash) Enter 'help' for a list of built-in commands. (initramfs) mount: mounting /dev/loop0 on //filesystem.squashfs failed: Input/output error Can not mount /dev/loop0 (/cdrom/casper/filesystem.squashfs) on //filesystem.squashfs
Edit: I got it to work, I'm not sure if this actually made any difference, but I formatted my hard drive using my Windows 7 installation DVD before trying to install Ubuntu 10.10. But it worked fine after that and I'm now running it on my PC without any problems (at the moment).
