Software :: Finding A Alternative For Foobar And Notepad++?

Aug 24, 2010

Ive been wondering, if there is a audio player for Linux similiar to Foobar. The only thing Im searching for is the ability to sort media library by folder structure. If you know something that can do the job, let me know... Im also searching for easy, intuitive text editor, like Notepad++. I use it for working in school and i just love the way it handles "tab" spaces, and bullet lists.

General :: Finding A DUMB Notepad Equivalent?

Mar 21, 2011

Why isn't there a simple program like Microsoft Windows' Notepad? One which is format stupid (ASCII only), so I can over-ride hidden html character entities. The other day I found myself wasting hours trying to get the Xephyr to work by cutting and pasting the terminal instructions from the following website into a gnome-terminal session - but each time it would give me the same, small window. I tried copying the text from the browser (using copy and paste) to gedit, but gedit was not showing the hidden character entities from the html code. After all this lost time trying different resolution sizes, I became suspicious that something was interfering with my cutting and pasting between gedit and the CLI terminal. Sure enough when I compared the webpage source code it gave me the clue to the problem.

From the same page - two examples:

Hidden character (notice the '' or × )
$ Xephyr -ac -screen 1280786 -br -reset -terminate 2> /dev/null :2 &
NO hidden character (notice the 'x')
$ Xephyr -ac -screen 1280x1024 -br -reset -terminate 2> /dev/null :1 &

[code]....

I even tried cutting and pasting out of the terminal yet somehow it retained the hidden characters. I could not find any preference setting in any of these programs which would allow for either eliminating the hidden characters doing a cut and paste or at least revealing them. I would like to plead to programmers out there for this basic functionality...

Debian :: Finding The Alternative To Jigdo?

Jun 18, 2011

I am wondering if there's a better alternative than jigdo. I was trying to help out and choose what is recommended but this jigdo crap is ridiculous. Didn't work for me and the primitive bad design of it is a waste of time.

Maybe Debian should consider joining today's technology. There are supposed to be hybrid isos you can download and even Ubuntu is finally joining the camps doing that. But, there's nothing on Debian web pages mentioning 'hybrid isos.' Who uses jigdo anyway? There's no way of entering the url or any instructions that make it intuitive. Get rid of the jigdo and do something different....

General :: Finding Alternative Filesystems For SSD?

Feb 14, 2011

I am tired of watching fsck check my filesystem when my eeepc 901 shuts down abruptly due to a crash. I know that with a journaling filesystem, I won't have to wait for a check. However, I am well aware of the poor I/O performance of the SSD, so I can imagine using a journaling filesystem being even more frustrating, since there will be constant writes to the journal? I will buy a new laptop without such a crummy ssd someday but, is there anything I can do now, on the software side of things?

General :: Finding An Alternative To Ubuntu?

Apr 27, 2010

Looking to get some input on finding a distribution to move to from Ubuntu.Overall, there's some changes--mostly unimportant overall, but stick in my craw--on the horizon, and I'm looking for alternatives. I'm a casual user, only one using my machine, don't need anything extra-special...something that isn't extremely utilitarian from the get-go, and doesn't come loaded with a boatload of things I'll never use. I enjoy putzing around in a CLI, and I'm not opposed to having to get used to slightly different commands when using it (though I expect that, on the whole, most things will be the same).I know, a little vague on what I'm looking for...best put, a stable system that doesn't require me to do TOO much, but lets me do what I want even if it means breaking things every once in a while.

Ubuntu :: Finding 11.04 Unity Desktop Alternative?

May 16, 2011

Having been totally happy with Ubuntu 10.04 and 10.10 but after a recent fresh install of 11.04 I find myself extremely stressed out with the desk top.I absolutely hate the unity desktop. It's flakey, unreliable, with random mouseclick issues, random application crashes and poor performance both in the increased time it now takes me to navigate to the apps that I want to fire up and in terms of really slow rendering of menus. It's awkward to start up multiple apps (I typically have my IDE, eMail client, browser, ssh terminals to remote servers and at least one terminal running at any one time)

I use my system as a serious development platform and I have come to the conclusion that 11.04 in it's default configuration format (and also with the classic log in being just as flakey) has to go. It's costing me too much in lost development time.So I'm faced with a decision, move back to using 10.10, stick with 11.04 but find a very much better desktop alternative to unity (and I don't mean the classic log in options as already explained) or I ditch Ubuntu in favour of an alternative distribution.

Debian :: Handling Virtualisation And Finding Program(s) To Alternative To VMware?

Mar 13, 2009

I currently run a home sever using windows server 2008. On it I'm using VMware to run 2 virtual machines (currently running CentOS (which is Red Hat based) as web and mail servers. It's not a big setup, we only host our personal websites and a couple for some friends. Although server 2008 handles resouces much better than server 2003, it's still running windows, which as we know is far more inferior to a Linux server. I'm trying to convince the husband to let me run everything on Debian, but he wants to run it on Red Hat (which okay, isn't bad but our household is devided. We have long running arguments because he likes his boxes Red Hat based running KDE, and I like my Debian distros running Gnome!)

The host server is running on a standard pc box, it's got a 2.5 gigahertz dual core processor and 3 gig of ram, almost one TB storage. (don't ask why I'm including this drastically important info!) I want to run the entire network on Debian. So that would be the main host running Debian and the two virtual machines also. The host itself would need to run as a file and app server for our home network and the two vertuals as web and mail servers. (we run about 12 domains three of which are under heavy usage with Mysql databases, so we run two servers so we can dedicate more rescources to the virtual server that sucks the most juice.) I was wondering how Debian handles virtualisation and what program(s) would be a good alternative to VMware?

Debian :: Apt-Get Install Foobar Download Only

May 7, 2010

I was wondering what exactly happens when I do apt-get --download-only? I have early morning unlimited download hours and I used them today to download a huge number of packages with 'apt-get install foobar --download-only'. Once the packages were downloaded it ended with a message indicating that it has only downloaded the packages. Later I tried to install the same packages using 'apt-get install foobar' and was prompted to download 300MB all over again. I then tried 'apt-get install foobar -no-download', and got the same result.

This didn't yield any results:
cd /var/
find . -iname"*foobar*"
cd ~/
find . -iname"*foobar*"

What do I need to do to get it to work. I thought that I had understood how to use --download-only after reading the manpage (and pages on the net), but I'm clearly wrong.

Ubuntu Multimedia :: Any Good Replacement For Foobar 2000?

Oct 7, 2010

I love foobar 2000 but I'm always trying to shy away from windows apps. What are your recommendations as "good" replacements for foobar 2000? So far I have tried:
Amarok - Crashes all the time, and keeps saying it can't play mp3s. Used to love this app, but seems broken for me now. Even if I reinstall it.
Rhythmbox - Great, but reports the wrong bitrate on all my songs. It is very important for me to know the correct bitrate for uploading to certain sites.
Audacious - Way to simple and winamp like.
Bangarang - No.

OpenSUSE Multimedia :: Flash / Foobar And Pulseaudio: Sound Not Working

Jan 25, 2011

I've been trying to use Wine to make Foobar work in Linux. The program does work, but it doesn't make a sound. For the rest, is works perfectly. I'm having the same problem with any Flash application I try to run: everything works, but without a sound. Amarok, however, doesn't have this problem.Somewhere I found that such problem might be related to Pulseaudio. So I tried going on the Pulseaudio configuration under "other" in the sound panel in YaST, but it tells me that Pulseaudio is not installed or cannot be configurated. I tried installing the package via Terminal, but it tells me that patterns-openSUSE-kde4_pure-11.3-22.1.x86_64 conflicts with pulseaudio given by pulseaudio-0.9.21-10.1.1.x86_64. I would have to delete it, if I wanted to install pulseaudio. Now I don't know where to put my hands. I am not good at this I'm not even sure I would solve my trouble installing pulseaudio, anyway. I'm using a sony vaio VPCEA3C4E with openSUSE 11.3 KDE installed trough USB key.
