I have been trying to use Tecplot (a plotting graphical package) on a remote server through X. After using it for a while (10 - 20 mins) my laptop freezes. However I can still move my mouse but cant do anything else but force restart which is bad.
View 1 RepliesI recently re-installed ubuntu to fix my freezing problem, but with no success. disc has no errors. I cleaned the disc and the cd drive, the cd burner has a problem installing while the dvd drive does fine. The computer is a HP Visualize X-class workstation with dual 1000mhz pentium 3s, 2 gigs ecc ram and a ATI AllinWonder 9700 pro @ 2x agp(wish was higher), on-board sound. So my problems are:
1) It randomly freezes within 24 hours regardless of who is logged in or if effects are on or what the load is. mouse is frozen too, completely unresponsive even ctrl alt f1.
2) My sound is screwy. its supported by alsa but i have to play with the volume to get sound and lots of times there are audio errors, it sounds like its robo-trippin. I have tried the sound guide.
3) Desktop effects only work with the user that logs in first. If I try to activate them when I switch users it searches for drivers then says it cant be enabled. not a priority.
Window xp works okay but the graphics drivers are giving me problems so i decide to do a dual boot.
I think I am going to put in a different video card. maybe its not all there, it got hot once when the fan died, put in a replacement and it worked but i see lines moving down the screen when there are blacks.
I understand that there are a few posts regarding this issue but for some reason I still can't get Firefox to stop freezing. And it freezes the whole machine!! I couldn't really find Firefox v 3.0.11 to download. I kept getting redirected to the newest version that doesn't work.

I installed 10.04 beta 2, but have all the updates to this point. Everything freezes randomly. I get a weird pattern across the screen and the mouse and keyboard stop working. From what i can tell, the hard drives just keep spinning at whatever speed they were spinning when the freeze occurred.
I haven't been able to reproduce it on purpose.
I was using an Nvidia 8400 GS and through some reading i thought it might be the nvidia drivers. I tried reinstalling the drivers and still froze randomly. I took out the video card but I realized I have an onboard nvidia chip (GeForce 6150SE nForce 430 rev a2). Drivers or not, it still freezes randomly.
I'm new to Ubuntu but I installed Ubuntu 11.04 with no problems. I activated the recommended drivers for my laptop. My laptop is: Acer Aspire 7540G with ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4570 video card and AMD Athlon II X2 processor. So the problems comes very very often. I watch videos on fullscreen or I leave them playing in ...... While playin a video the laptop just freezes. Everything stops working. I think this problems comes up may be every 30-40 minutes of watching a movie. I'm not a fan of holding the shut down button for 10 seconds every 40 minutes so I'll be very grateful if someone helps. I've removed Syn to Vblank from the CompizConfig because otherwise Ubuntu runs really slow on my computer and the videos are playing very slow and with very bad quality. When i removed it everything began to run faster but now I've this problem with the freezing... Any ideas ?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am a new user for ubuntu, recently i have updated to 11.04 version last week. When i kept my desktop idle for long time, the system goes down and it didn't wake up at all. I didnt change in the setting for screen saver and power management still. It is system default.
I didnt face this problem when i use version 10. Only the new version i am facing this.

I've recently installed 10.04 LTS on a desktop PC so I can use it as a Zabbix monitoring machine.
I fresh installed and all seemed to be well but after a few restarts the system suddenly refused to boot anymore. The BIOS splash screen comes up and then a cursor blinks on the screen for a couple of seconds and then... nothing. The keyboard and monitor both go unresponsive and nothing happens.
I can hear the HD spin up and it isn't making any weird noises. Also, booting from the CD works and I can see and work with the HD so I'm not convinced that this is the problem.
In fact, I actually did a fresh reinstallation of 10.4 onto the machine and started from scratch. Again it ran fine for a few hours while I was setting Zabbix up. After a couple of restarts, again the freeze on boot.
I ran a HD scan and everything seems fine. I've also switched the HD over to the second IDE connection in the box just in case...
Does anyone else have this problem? Is it a bug? Any ideas on how to workaround it? (Short of going back to a previous Ubuntu version)
I have been using various operating systems on this computer.
At the moment I am using AntiX Mepis. I switched to Linux because my Windows used to freeze all of a sudden after a few hourse or even minutes.
Now my Linux was quite stable for a few days but again, it freezes in a few minutes when I use a Window Manager. In the terminal without using any Window Manager it never freezes.
Can anyone tell me the solution to this? code...
I have double boot windows xp and linux mint 10 on a dell desktop. from the start, linux mint would not completely shutdown. the windows xp shuts down completely. i have tried the commands sudo poweroff, sudo telinit 0 and sudo shut down -h now. not one works. i also have updated to the dvd version and is updated on everything else.
i do not know how to go to bios or perform any programming tasks. may i then request that instructions, if any, be detailed?
Windows won't boot on Grub after I just updated Ubuntu. I tried to follow the solutions to other people who have had similar problems, but I can't get them to work for me. I am assuming you will want to see this code...

As a normal user I have activated the functions of the Quit applet, i.e. Logout, Shutdown and Restart are active buttons. I am able to restart or shutdown, no problems. But when I use the Logout button I don't get logged out, just returned to the login shell & I am still logged in as my user. I don't have a display manager installed and I do NOT want to use a display manager such as XDM or GDM. How do I get the Logout button to actually logout the user? It appears I am only getting logged out of the x-session, but I want complete logout.

When switching to the x11-login, the computer freezes during the change of the screen-resolution. Even switching to a console (ctrl+alt+F1/F2/F3...), ctrl+alt+del or pushing the power-button is not possible. After switching off the PC manually, it won't boot at all and freezes directly after switching on again (at bios-time).
Turning the PC off and on again helps - everything is okay afterwards. This doesn't happen always but it is annoying. Sometimes I have to try this procedure 5 o6 times until I can use the computer. Which of the thousand of log-files is the right one to look in? I am using Xubuntu and a Ati Radeon Xpress Graphics card, along with an AMD64 and the 64-Bit-Version of Xubuntu.
Ever since I made the switch to Ubuntu I have had a problem getting back to the X Windows environment from Virtual Terminals. Control+Alt+F1~6 work fine but when I try Control+Alt+F7 my screen freezes.
I have been trying to find a solution to this problem but it doesn't seem to be affecting many other users. Not sure if it matters, but I'm running 64-bit Lucid Lynx.
I'm now on 11.04 (64 bit on a desktop), but had the problem on 10 as well. I get the occasional complete system freeze. There is nothing in the logs indicating a problem and it is not the graphics card, as I cannot ssh in from another machine. It sometimes happens after three days of running and sometimes after 20 hours.

Booting into recovery mode loads the tools menu then freezes before I select anything. The system still boots and runs windows 7 from the same hard disk just fine. I've booted a live cd and run file system check on my ext4 partition and it says it's clean. I can mount the volumes and read the data, just can't get the os to boot.Any suggestions before I backup and reformat?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Dell Latitude E6410 which I can boot from an Iomega external hard drive when I want to run Linux on it. It is a work issued Windows XP laptop and when I travel, I am more comfortable with Linux, so I created a dual boot option without touching their hardware. The external hard drive plugs in to the USB ports and the BIOS picks it up as the primary boot media, although the internal drive is still present. (That is the desired outcome).The problem is that the system periodically locks up solid and only a forced power off will get it to respond. The system seems to go into a kernel panic and fails to write anything before dying. The system completely locks up and stops responding to mouse and keyboard. It also seems to drop off the network. When I look at the logs after restarting, nothing at all shows up related to a kernel panic or anything else. To further complicate the diagnosis, on the reboots, sometimes the boot process locks up at "Starting GDM3", sometimes it doesn't, and wont for several attempts but eventually will boot to gnome. Some times it runs fine for a few hours, sometimes for only a few minutes. Can anyone recommend a way to diagnose this?I am trying to run Debian 6.0 32-bit with the defaults.

The answer "this is normal" is unfortunatly not getting censored. Even linux must be able to take heavy load without crashing.

The vlc-problem could be solved by the way: It seems my MESA-installation caused OpenGL to work. As output in vlc, everything runs as it should now.
I've got a problem since I changed from wired to wireless. It doesn't happen repeatably, but usually when more than one application is trying to use the internet connection at the same time (eg iceweasel, icedove, java programs etc). Suddenly, all internet connectivity is lost, and the applications start to hang. Then I can try to close them but they don't close properly and still appear in the ps list. I can pull out the USB dongle (TP-Link TL-WN821N) but nothing responds any more, I can't disconnect using the taskbar icon, and when I try to kill -9 the iceweasel or icedove or java processes, even as root it does nothing.
Eventually the only thing I can think to do is to shut down. Except, when I try to shut down it says it can't stop the avahi daemon, and draws a little tree of the things which are hanging off the avahi daemon (like the apps trying to use the network), and says it can't stop them either. Then it tries to unmount the drives but fails to do that too, and doesn't umount either / or /home. Now the login prompts don't respond any more either (although I can still cycle through non-responsive tty screens), and the only thing left is to hold the finger on the power button.
As the title says, I have tried both of them and they both freeze my system with no apparent reason. They freeze by just looking at them in the fist few minutes after startup and a hard reboot is needed. So I keep coming back to 11.6. Does anyone else have the same problem or is it just my system? By the way I have an HD 6970 in an AMD CPU based system running squeeze. And the reason why I keep installing new drivers and don't stick with 11.6 is a futile hope that anti-aliasing will work with compiz enabled.

View 2 Replies View RelatedThe system runs just fine then all of a sudden it "freezes". For example an input box doesn't respond nor can I scroll down the page. But when the system comes out of the freeze 5-15 seconds later, it suddenly does all the input that was used during the freeze. The scroll and letters suddenly show up. I don't loose mouse control and I can do some other system functions but not all of them.

When it freezes, everything is frozen, even the second hand on the analogue clock. One more issue, and I'm not sure if it's related, my stupid screen goes black after 5 minutes of no typing or mouse movement. This never happended when I first installed it. The issue just started within the last 3 weeks. Kpackage Kit is hidden. I was using it to do my automatic updates. Now I just use yum. between the time I first installed Fedora 12 and now, something has happened to my build to cause these issues.
