(Say if uboot is already initializing gig port and devices then why does kenel do it again?)

General :: Ubuntu - Cheatsheet For Commands To Save System?

May 20, 2010

I've recently lost my window options, had to somehow manipulate my way to Xchat and ask some people how do I get it back (it was metacity --replace, and after I decided to stop the command and run it in background the X was completely useless so I had to do killall -u user). And that was after the internet connection stopped working for some reason (might've been the ISP).

The thing is, after using linux a long time, I still get the feeling that on dire situations, I don't know the good tricks (stuff like metacity --replace). I feel like a really need like a "rescue" cheatsheet for things like: how to save the X no matter what without pressing reset how to reset the system to "normal state" how to connect to the internet through the command line how to monitor what the X is doing (using ubuntu linux 10.04 btw)

How can I do this with shell commands in Linux?

My current thoughts:

ssh <user>@<computer1address> -p <port> - gives me a shell on the remote computer
(I think I should use scp, but I dont how exactly how in my case)

What are the exact commands I should use?

reason my Debian 5 system will not stop printing blank pages. I've got the CUPS system installed, and I've gone to the control page and canceled everything. I've also turned the printer off and restarted it several times. Every time it comes back online it starts printing blank pages again. My paper does not need to be heat treated. It's fine as it is. So, how to I stop this waste of electricity and printer MTBF? What else might be sending commands to the printer besides the CUPS system?

I tried to use windows system recovery console and committing fixmbr and fixboot commands, but didn't work.

After all, i boot with opensuse livecd to run the grub and got my opensuse back.

How can I installed windows on a opensuse installed system? My plan was first to install windows xp, then opensuse again.

OpenSUSE Install :: Commands Make System Boot To Grub Shell Instead Of Grub Menu?

Apr 17, 2010

I started another thread about this to get help booting into openSUSE after Fedora rewrote my bootloader and deleted all other entries. I managed to fix it but I never did find out why the following commands caused my system to boot to the grub shell instead of the grub menu.

Code:
grub
root (hd0,3)
setup (hd0)
quit
reboot

Can anyone explain to me why these commands caused my system to boot directly to a grub shell? It's as if there were no /boot/grub/menu.lst files for it to use, but after I got everything back to normal, the files were still there.

If it helps, this is how the drive was setup before and now, except Fedora was on /dev/sda4 and has since been deleted.

Code:
Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/sda1 1 262 2104483+ 82 Linux swap / Solaris
/dev/sda2 263 13316 104856255 83 Linux

Ubuntu :: NVidia 8600 GT - Commands Like "init 1" Or "gdm Stop" Made My System Freeze?

Apr 28, 2011

this is in fact my first attempt to try to work on a linux distribution and (dispite my problem) I'm still excited to work with it! I got the taste from messing around with my android phone, so I know a little bit of the syntax of the commands that are used, but it is realy basic. Now, my problem is my screen. I have two crt-screens ( inch and inch) which I can't manage to get working properly.

1. On a fresh install I had the problem that i couldn't get my refresh rate higher than 60 htz.I tryed installing different proposed drivers via the "system -drivers" (don't know if that is the right discription, I'm Dutch). The two proposed drivers didn't solve my problem.

2. I went to NVidia and download the Linux drivers for my graphical card (GeForce 8600 GT).I've gone trough a lot of trouble installing them: you can't install them when the Xserver is running, but commands like "init 1" or "gdm stop" made my system freeze (which is an other question: is this normal?). Eventualy I managed to install it by the "boot in safe mode"-option which I can choose when I boot my computer (I'm on a dual boot with windows 7).

3. Once the drivers installed it got worse. There was only one screen working and it worked only on a resolution of 640x480. It was just horifing. But with a lot of patient I managed to get one screen working at a resolution of 1024x768 and (again) not more then 60 htz, but the other screen was still stuck at 640x480. I kept playing around with it, edited my xorg.conf file manualy, broke it, restored it, etc etc. realy fun

4. This is the status ATM: both screens are working with twinview, both at a resolution of 640x480 (I can only select a lower one) and a refresh rate which I can't edit (stuck at "auto" and certainly way to low).I have an Nvidia driver which I don't like (it has made thing worse) but I can't unistall (I realy just don't know how to do that).I'm going to give my xorg.conf file at the end of this message. If this is a very typicly question, then I excuse myself. I realy have tryed to look for it, but couldn't find a thing. And if I found something, it was explained on a level of experitise much higher then mine.

OpenSUSE Install :: Moving A Moderately Complex System From An Old System To A New System

Sep 25, 2010

My problem is that I need to move a moderately complex system from an old system to a new system. The old system is a core 2 duo running on an asus p5k-se (p35 chipset) M/B, Nvidia 8500 gt, 3 x sata II hard disks, 1 x sata dvd, 1 x ide hd, 4GB ram. It runs opensuse 11.1 kde 4 as a desktop system + samba server, apache server, database server + other non-opensuse software. In addition some of the opensuse software is not the default 11.1 versions as later versions were required. The nvidia driver is from the nvidia repo. There are several file systems, some under LVM.

The new system will be a core5 760, asus p7p55d-e M/b (p55 chipset), nvidia 240, 3 x sata II HD, 1 x sata dvd, 4GB ram and possibly 1 x ide HD. This M/B also includes USB 3 & sata III. I have no USB 3 devices but this may eventually change. I have no plans for sata III and believe that it may be better to attach any sata III SSD to the sata II bus.

What I would like to do is to move the hard disks from old system to the new system. What I would like to know is, if the system is left at 11.1, is the system likely to work with the new hardware. If the answer is no, if the system was upgraded to 11.3, would the transfer of the hard disks then work? In order to upgrade from 11.1 to 11.3 using the DVD i believe I should get rid of all non-default repos. I assume that I should also get rid of anything that was installed from them, e.g. the nvidia driver and any software versions installed manually outside RPM. Also is there any default 11.1 software that should be removed either before or after the upgrade to 11.3

Debian :: Run GUI Commands From Shell?

The panel plugin from xfce4-mixer has a bug:s icon doesn't update as the volume is changed. This bug has already been reported. One curious thing about it is that, if you right click on the volume icon on the panel, go to 'Settings' (or 'Properties', I don't know, mine is in Portuguese) and then close the window that pops on the screen, the icon is updated. Is it possible to open and close the settings window automatically with a bash script? Like this, I could associate this script with the volume keys of my keyboard, so that the icon is updated as the the volume is changed.
