Ubuntu Security :: Gnome Nanny - Choose The Times When The Computer Can Be Used And Limit The Internet ?
Jan 3, 2011
I installed Gnome Nanny. I can choose the times when the computer can be used and limit the internet. However, these times are not being enforced. Is there some other settings that are used to enforce these settings?

I'm running Maverick on an Acer AO521 netbook. I've got a k125 processor and an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4200 series video card.Since upgrading to 10.10 with the new version of gnome my computer has started getting stuck on blank screen when booting the GUI. Not every time, but most times i boot.If I boot to command line through GRUB there's no problem. When I try to run gnome from the command line i get the same problem.

Is there a way to create a guest account and have Ubuntu "automagically" limit the amount of time the user can access the Internet? So, for example, could she set up an account for her son and limit his Internet access to an hour at a time?

I'm trying to install Gnome Nanny [url]
I installed it using Synaptic and when I restart, the Nanny daemon appears to be working.
However, when I try to access to the Parental Control (System - Administration - Parental Control) and after writing my password, it does not shown anything. Nor any windows not any configuration.
I am using Lucid Lynx I386.
Do you know any parental control which could block programs execution (like games, instant messengers, browsers...), could have web filtering and could have spending time control?

I have dowmloaded the latest version of Gnome Nanny, but have run into an instal problem at the first hurdle:
I have extracte the folder to Documents: Cd/ to the folder and run the ./configure command and get this message: No package 'pygtk-2.0' found
I have checked the install files and edited the lines which contain the above to now read pygtk -2.0 >=2.8 as 2.8 is the version of python I have installed. In package manager it only goes back to v2.2.
How I can get around this error?
Running Ubuntu 9.1 karmic Koala.

I have difficulty in running Gnome Nanny in Lubuntu 10.04. Installation is easy just by adding repository and do sudo apt-get install. But clicking on "Parental Control" resulting in nothing and I do not know how to change the setting for example, email only and no browing?
I think Gnome Nanny is user friendly and suit my purpose to stop user access to browser internet but email only through zimbra.

Today I noticed my sdl modem flashing away when I had no internet access programs active as far as I was aware. I did a 'ps ax' to see what was running. I saw nothing that warranted internet access. I didn't recognize the gvfsd-computer process and tried finding documentation about it on my system. I began to feel uncomfortable when I couldn't find anything showing what it was. Finally, I killed the process and the internet access immediately stopped. Research on the net showed that gvfsd-computer is a file browser. I find this very disturbing. Why was a file browser accessing my disk drive (the light was flashing) and why was it accessing the internet without my requesting such an action?

I noticed that in Fedora 15 Beta when you choose a minimal install then add ONLY the defaults of the "GNOME Desktop" package, you will get this error: gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 has a required package:
system-backgrounds-gnome
When I look for gnome-desktop3-3.0.1-2.fc15.x86_64 it is not on any installation menu list. I prefer gnome, but installed KDE and that worked. Any ideas of getting gnome to work?

I'm looking for a program or script that will automatically shut down my computer at specified times. The thing is, if I happen to be using the computer at those times, I want it to ask me if I want to shut down before it does it.
Something like I want the computer to shut down at 9 am every day. When it's 9am, a prompt pops up and says, "Do you want to shut down or continue running? If you do not answer, the computer will automatically shut down in 10 seconds." Not sure if something like this is out there or not.

My desktop computer, running 11.04 (fresh install) sometimes can't establish a wired Ethernet connection. Sometimes when I boot, it keeps trying to establish, but with no luck. I keep trying to choose "Auto eth0" from the networking menu, but still, it doesn't succeed. If I reboot, it sometimes works. I can't establish a connection about half the times that I boot.
The computer is connected with a cable to a router ("Belkin Wireless Pre-N router"), and the router is connected with a cable to a cable modem.I've been using Ubuntu for a while, and I've had a problem for the past few versions (since around 10.04)? I thought that it might be some old issue that got resolved, so I did a fresh install of 11.04 today, and still have the same behaviorI'm willing to try things next time I can't get a connection, but don't know what.

Ubuntu 10.10 amd64 : Suspend doesn't work properlyI just installed Ubuntu 10.10 amd 64 on HP Pavilion dv5-1299ee. but Suspend functionality doesn't work well.First I tried to hibernate and with some error messages it worked. But when I ed to suspend the computer, screen turned off and on two or more times and suddenly login screen appeared. I used Log files to locate where the problem is. I fidia Geforce 9600M GT can't be suspended. so I installed the driver, tried so many things and this line of error took its place to another of AHCI controller. I handled it with using modprobe ahci. and it seems that it worked. My log shows that there is no problem with suspending devices. but the computer wakes up immediately after suspend.this is the log file ( pm-suspend.log ):

I've recently upgraded my squeeze to sid, then installed gnome shell as default window manager.
1. Gnome shell was normal until yesterday, I upgraded new packages up to date, then I cannot log into gnome shell any more (however, fallback mode is normal). It shows a sad computer screen with message "Oh no, something has gone wrong". The only thing I can do is pressing the logout button to log out.
2. Debian is running on my thinkpad T60p, and I can choose keyboard model in Gnome2, but I can't find any options in the system setting in Gnome shell to change keyboard layout for model IBM T60/R60.

I'd like to limit ps aux command outputs to current user only(the one, who invoked "ps". I've recently saw this feature on FreeBSD systems and on at least one Linux system running on shell.sf.net. I run Linux 2.6.33, I wanted to know how to make that. Any advice? Googling around wasn't too successful, perhaps I don't know how to query that, recently tried with "limit ps outputs" "ps aux current user", etc... had no luck.

I'm trying to limit the number of the ICMP packets reaching my server, so I'm using the limit module of iptables, unfortunately it seems the limit I set is totally ignored as I can easily send tens of ICMP packets and get a reply in less than 0.3 second Quote:
m3xican@m3xtop:~$ sudo ping -i0 -c20 x.x.x.x 20 packets transmitted, 20 received, 0% packet loss, time 230ms
rtt min/avg/max/mdev = 184.969/185.895/189.732/1.301 ms, pipe 16, ipg/ewma 12.138/186.232 ms This is the rule I'm using to accept ICMP packets (default setting is DROP)
Code:
iptables -A INPUT -p icmp -m limit --limit 1/s -j ACCEPT
And these are the kernel modules related to iptables
Code:
Module Size Used by
xt_limit 1382 0

Dist: Fedora 14
SSHD: OpenSSH 5.5p1
I need to limit the number of ssh connections a user has. All the users are using tunnel only so their shell is set to /sbin/nologin The logins do not open a shell they just create the tunnel so /etc/security/limits.conf has no effect on them at all.
I tried setting 'MaxSessions 1' in sshd_config but either that doesn't not do what I expect it to or it plain does not work as even with a normal user I was able to open an unlimited number of sessions. I need a good secure way to limit each user to 1 ssh session without them having a shell but Im unable to find a solution.

It's been awhile since I've been on here. I suppose that can be considered a good thing, since I made the completely transfer to Ubuntu three months ago and everything's been running completely smoothly. Anyway, security is a pretty big thing to me. I usually change the root password, take sudo off (and default gksu, not gksudo), encrypt my hard drives, etc... One thing I also do is create a separate password for my login keyring. I don't mind having to enter one extra password at login, but it started prompting two times, and now three. It's the same password every time, so my question is..

I'd like to limit login attempts for specific user. I've found information in manpages: [URL]but I'm not sure if this '@' is purposly there, so would be that correct?
Code:
aparaho - maxlogins 4
or
Code:
@aparaho - maxlogins 4
Maybe '@' is a group syntax? I'm confused.
What happens after 4 failed loggins? Is it enough to restart system to get another login attempts?
Are there any other values that it is reasonable to limit for safety reasons?

I'm looking for a solution for sendmail to limit the number of emails send per miniute per IP. For example all my local computer user with ip 192.x.x.x need to able to send 10 emails/minite (emails, not connections!. The rest of the world can send for example 200 emails/minute to the mailserver. If the amount of emails per minute is exceeded, sendmail needs to block receiving emails from the spesific IP. I want to do this to stop spaming from my local network. Is it possible?

It is known that binaries with the SetUID bit enabled are a threat for the system.I saw on this ArchLinux wiki[URL].tead_Of_Setuida way to limit the use of SetUID bit thanks to POSIX capabilities. It looks very interesting.Does anyone of you used it already? Is it a burden for the system afterwards (like binaries not working, needing to be fixed); or is it seamless
