Fedora :: Too Many KDE Applications On A Gnome Install

Oct 17, 2009

I have what seems to be far to many KDE programs running on my Gnome desktop is this normal?

I thought there would be gnome equivalents.

I'll list them:

Is this normal for a Gnome Desktop Fedora installation and if so which are completely arbitrary and can be removed safely?

Also is xorg supposed to use 8-20% of the CPU when all that is running is the system monitor? The system monitor application also uses 20-70% of the CPU when it is running by itself also. (Intel Pentium 4, 3.2ghz)

I didn't choose any KDE desktop Applications Intentionally

Fedora :: Gnome Versus KDE Applications

May 31, 2010

I installed Fedora 13 and use the Gnome desktop. I want to keep my installation as clean as possible and have heard some contrary advice about installing both Gnome and KDE desktops, so I want to stay with just Gnome. In the past I have mixed both and feel that resulted in tons of packages that I probably didn't need and tons of updates all the time. However, some applications seem to be KDE applications and installing them requires installation of many KDE packages. This is a source of confusion for me:

Is there a distinction between Gnome applications and KDE applications? If so, how do you tell the difference? Should one NOT install KDE applications if you are using the Gnome desktop and not interested in installing KDE desktop? Is there a best practice on how to approach which software to install so that you do not create a mix and match mess?

Fedora :: Gnome Is Stuck Remembering Applications

Aug 4, 2009

I recently was playing with some gnome settings and I went to System > Preferences > Startup applications then I hit the Options tab and checked "Automatically remember applications when logging out" was testing to see if it actually worked... and it did.. so I unchecked it and restarted again and... it's the SAME 3 applications I was running.. and its stuck..tried checking it again and then closing everything but now it's still doing it with the same 3 apps I had running (Totem, Firefox, Pidgin).Anybody know how to wipe where it's remembering the applications I'm running? so this can stop when I log in.

somehow checking it again and closing everything worked this time, but does anybody know where I can find the find the remaining information for this function? so i can wipe it clean, whatever may be left.

Fedora X86/64bit :: Disappearing Icons And Applications In Gnome - 14

Feb 12, 2011

I just did a clean install of fedora 14 on a dell precision 690 (multiprocessor system, with buckets of memory--16gb). It is old, but a great machine. It is dual boot to windows, but that is probably irrelevant. Note, the reason I did the clean install was the exact problem I report here had cropped up on this system running fedora 14, but I was having kluged together the system after grub issues, so i blamed it on something unrelated and hoped a clean install would solve this.

After installing the system, running updates, etc., I installed open office, and virtualbox. I then set up two virtual machines in virtual box, both Win XP, and added my favorite windows applications. that may not be relevant, but that is the history. I added a couple pieces of high end software too, which required some odd libraries--libgdal and libexpat.

After a couple of of days of using the machine, I tried to run open office (after having used it several times, and logged off several times) and it wouldn't execute. I then realized that all of my desktop icons had disappeared. I then experimented and realized several other applications wouldn't execute from the gnome applications menu. however, I could execute anything I wanted from the command line in a terminal.

I read a suggestion in the forums to create a new user. painful process, but that did indeed solve the problem (temporarily). But then the problem repeated with the new user. So now, this really sucks and I'm cursing fedora. After consulting my linux geek brother, I tried something else--I loaded kde, and tried that. (btw--why doesn't ctl-alt-backspace allow you to switch windows managers in this linux?)

Anyway, kde works fine with everything except open office--it still won't run for some reason, even in kde.

Strangely, my virtual machines worked throughout all this. that is, I could execute virtualbox from gnome, everything runs fine.

Fedora :: Prevent Some Apps From Appearing In Gnome 3 (Activities->Applications)

Jun 11, 2011

I don't want to install alacarte to do this. I've copied the .desktop files from /usr/share/applications to ~/.local/share/applications that I don't want appearing in the gnome 3 applications list (e.g., email settings for evolution), and added 'NoDisplay=true' to the end of each desktop file. Restarted gnome shell, even tried logging out and back in, but they still appear there. Previously, in gnome2, desktop files under the home dir superceded the global directory. Do I need to edit them directly as root to effect the changes, or could this be a selinux problem?

Fedora :: How To Install Downloaded Applications

Jun 16, 2011

It's a newbie question that has probably already been answered hundreds of times, but Google didn't help me.
How can I install an application I've downloaded from the internet?I know I can easily install software with the terminal (apt-get, yum etc.) and that there is also a package manager. But still I'd like to know how to install an application I've downloaded with the browser. I've downloaded Thunderbird from this link URL...and after unpacking, I have a folder called 'thunderbird'. Now, what do I have to do to install the application?

I'm not actually concerned with installing Thunderbird anymore because when I typed 'thunderbird' in the terminal, it told me that it isn't installed and if it should be installed. I replied 'y' and some minutes later (slow internet connection...) it was installed and ready to use..

Ubuntu :: How To Use Gnome Icons In KDE Applications

Jan 18, 2011

I run Gnome and i want KDE applications to use the same icon set as i have for my Gnome desktop. I have searched the file system and found a folder called "default.kde4" in /usr/share/icons. I assume this is where KDE applications pull their icons from. Firstly, this folder is a linked folder. How do i find out where the original folder that it is linked to is? Secondly, i am assuming, that the KDE icons won't be a name for name match for the icons i am using in Gnome (Faenza just in case anyone is curious). What is the easiest way to get the KDE icons changed for the one's i am using in Gnome?

OpenSUSE :: KDE Applications Not Conforming To Gtk Theme Under Gnome?

May 18, 2011

I'm having a cosmetic problem with KDE applications, like Kile, K3b and Okular, under gnome, they do not conform to the gtk theme set for gnome - which I would like them to do. I'm running 11.4 with gnome 2.32.1 and qt 4.7.1

In 'qt configuration', when I set the GUI style (in the 'Appearance' tab) to 'desktop settings' or 'gtk+' the KDE applications look an unnactractive mix of the gtk theme and the default theme for the applications (which looks like cleanlooks). Some buttons and menus conform to the gtk look and others do not. If I select 'cleanlooks' instead, for instance, the KDE applications have a consistent 'cleanlooks' appearance that has no resemblance to my desktop appearance (e.g. I use a dark window background with white font, and the KDE applications have white window backgrounds with black font, they have different window colors.)

Now, if I have 'desktop theme' selected in 'qt configuration' and I have one of these applications open and I then change my appearance preferences, say to another theme (through 'Control Center > Appearance'), the theme is applied consistently, and the KDE application looks like I would like it to. However, once the application is quit and restarted, the ugly theme mixing recurs, that is the theme selection does not get saved to the KDE applications.

As far as I can tell this is a KDE 4 problem not a qt problem, as other qt applications (like VLC) look fine when set to 'desktop theme' or 'gtk+', while KDE 3 applications (like Quanta plus) seem to completely ignore the 'gui style' settings in 'qt configuration'.

Note this is not specific to 11.4 or gnome 2.32.1, I had the same problem with previous versions of gnome in 11.3, and Fedora 14 when I still used it.

Ubuntu :: Segmentation Fault On All Gnome Applications?

Sep 16, 2010

I am unable to successfully start either the XFCE or Gnome desktops, in Gnome the my wallpaper is displayed but that is all. This problem appeared yesterday night after my hard disk filled up, then all Gnome programs began to crash, also "df" failed to terminate. I was able to clear some space from the terminal (around 2 GB).

I was able to run an xterm so I attempted to load the components of Gnome manually from the terminal, to see which were problematic. I found that every application which uses Gnome fails to execute, producing a segmentation fault. A Java crash informed me that a "problematic frame" producing SIGSEGV was libgnomevfs-2.so.0. I ran md5sum on all libraries matching the pattern /usr/lib/*gnome*, the checksums are identical to those on a working Ubuntu installation, so it is unlikely to be corruption of a library.

I have managed to determine that the problem is not in GLib or GTK+ as I wrote a simple (hello world) GTK+ application which executes without problem.Furthermore (due to a lack of Gnome's network manager) I am without a network connection on the problematic computer.

Ubuntu :: Applications Disappeared From GNOME Menus?

Jun 19, 2011

my problem is that the Applications menu is empty and Preferences and Administration no longer appear under the System menu.I'm running 11.04 and I use Ubuntu Classic because I prefer the GNOME interface. The other day I was trying out various audio/multimedia players so I was installing and uninstalling several programs with the Software Center.

I started to play a CD in Audacious when the system crashed. The screen went dark but the computer kept running. I ended up doing a hard reset. Everything booted up normally and everything seems to run fine except my GNOME menu is messed up. The Applications menu is empty and Preferences and Administration no longer appear under the System menu. (I realize I can get to these through System Settings but I want the menus back) Furthermore alacarte will not run so that I can edit the menu contents.

I've tried using one of the old menu versions in /home/dan/.config/menus but they are all outdated and I cannot edit them. It also doesn't bring back Preferences and Administration.I've tried reinstalling alacarte and that doesn't do anything.I've tried using other panel programs like Docky and AWN but I have the same menu problem.I also tried resetting the panels to defaults but that doesn't fix the problem.

OpenSUSE Install :: Install Error - Config Defaults For GNOME For GNOME Power Manager Have Not Been Installed Correctly

Mar 4, 2010

Things were running fine until GNOME misbehaved;

GNOME failed to load telling me:

Install error, Configuration defaults for GNOME power manager have not been installed correctly.

So I

Code:

To the shell and check the logs in gdm and find this:

Could not ask power manager if user can suspend, launch helper exited with unknown return code 0.

So I try

Code:

To see if another user will get the desktop; I get the error

Cant create etc/passwd no space left on device.

So I

Code:

And get the following

I insert a usb drive to prepare for back up; Run

Code:

On the shell to get the usb device name; Then run

Code:

To mount the device.

I end up with:

Cant create lock file /etc/mtab~ 4610 No space left on device(use -n flag to override)

So, I

Code:

And see 9 partitionitions

Code:

Again to check which ones are loaded at boot up time and get

plus some other file systems mounted at boot up, but not mapping to any physical partitionition.

I try

Code:

On partition9 and get warnings because its mounted, so I chicken out and try

Code:

And run into the error:

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4832 no space left on device (use -n flag to override)

Good thing is there is a

Code:

Since space is a problem, I

Code:

On partition6 which is not mounted at boot up time and try to

Code:

I still get the error

cant create lock file /etc/mtab~4735 no space left on device (use -n flag to override

Code:

For package update tells me

cant open /var/run/zypp.pid in mode w

Code:

For power management tells me its not even recognised as a command.
