Software :: Messed Up Fstab On A System Without Terminal?

I have access to a Linux machine (CentOS 5.6) hat doesn't have a physical terminal. From what I've seen before, it's a cluster with racks of nodes. I SSH into the system to access it.I broke the fstab file, and the system is not coming up. I need to fix this ASAP, but:1. There is no lab admin to help me for at least a week.2. I may get not more than 2 hours inside the lab to fix this.Is connecting a keyboard and a monitor the only way to fix this problem (I'm guessing I may also need a live CD.) ? This is an install of openSUSE-11.2 32bit. Obvoiusly, during the fresh install something went wrong. The HDD has 4 primary partitions, meant for /boot / swap /home (in that order). Instead of /home partition /dev/sda4 is mounted on /usr.
Currently it looks like this:

The space in the volume name seems to disagree with fstab and terminal, I can't change the volume name either as I do not have access to Windows at this time. Is there a way I can help fstab or the terminal to recognize the space in part of the volume name?

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04. I just installed HP drivers for my printer tonight, and now my laptop is acting a little "buggy". Some applications have froze, and my system tray icons are getting messed up. Sometimes the little power button dissapears and my username appears there instead, but it's not clickable. This means I have to shut down by using the power button on my laptop.
Also, as I am typing this message, the letters onscreen are lagging quite a bit behind my actual typing. It's as if there's something running in the background that is slowing everything down and messing things up.

This is my problem:I installed gnome-shell, it worked, I was impressed, I stopped using it When I stop using it, I found that it changed my system, for the worse These are the changes it made to my system:Startup services do not run, I have to run programs manually I cannot lock my screen, either by hotkey or the normal menu applet Totem no longer prevents the screen from going blank while playing
Its like some sort of system service is not starting, I'm sure there are other symptoms that I have forgotten. All of these problems are livable, but inconvenient. I should have known better than to mess with my system, but I wish I knew how to reverse it. Naturally I uninstalled gnome-shell but it did nothing.

Last night I was making a boot usb drive with usb startup creator onto a USB external well I, messed up and lost the partition table for 2 USB drives: my 500 gb hard drive was pluged in whilst i was doing this silly i know it was partitioned 251 gb its now showing as 500 gb but the data is still on drive it seems the file system is gone or damaged

I have ntfs partition installed bran new ubuntu system. I have some problem with unrar utf8 character zip files.Then i change my fstab file that uses files in D:ubuntudisks oot.disk and i added with out no fearless Code: ,utf8 and after all now i can't boot my linux system it does not allow me to change anything in fstab file. Although i use as a prefix sudo or as a root "sudo -i" commands I dont have any right to change it.

I've had two hd's in my box forever. for more space and backup reasons. Well I have started running the Debian Squeeze distro since December. I've had many issues, some are still unresolved. but now I'm running into major headaches with the fstab. Specifically dealing with/wondering why UUID's are used instead of the old /dev/hd? I was a little annoyed when I tried Kubuntu to find /dev/sd? used instead of /dev/hd? but that was workable. But the UUID's are a nightmare. Here's my problem.
My main box is finally giving up the ghost. The mobo is dying. So in order to do some tests I took my hd bundle (my two hard drives with their cables) physically out of the box and temp installed them in a test box. I wanted to do some benchmark and other tests. I got all kinds of errors. I found that the system wasn't recognizing the UUID's listed in fstab. My concern is when the new mobo gets here next week I won't simply be able to plug the hd's in like I always have been and just let Linux reconfigure itself (Debian used to be good about this). I really don't want to have to clean reinstall if it's not needed.
So for this I have two questions. WHY developers decided to drop using /dev/hd? or even /dev/sd? ?
And is it possible to revert fstab's listings back to the old /dev/hd? settings. In debian fstab had lines commented out showing how each partition was listed in it's /dev/hd? status during install.
I'm getting really sick of all these archane changes in ALL aspects of linux that don't seem to have any good explaination or need.

is it safe to change fstab UUID entry for the system to /dev/sdb4? and after editing fstab, is there a script or command I need to run to release lock or update mount information? edit: I see not correct, and therefore not safe,but is there a format to tell linux to use /dev/sda1 instead of UUID= or label= .

I'm dual booting with Windows 7 and would like to have my windows 7 user folder mount when I boot.
After some looking around I edited /etc/fstab to add the following line:
This works. But it mounts the windows partition from the root level. I'd like to just mount C:UsersFHSM (/Users/FSHM) to /mnt/windows.
I'm trying to get it so that when I click on the windows drive I get my windows user folder instead of having to click through from C: to get to it.
I'm the only user on this system but if I created a second windows user would my home folder mount for that person too or does setting the user ID prevent that from happening?

Right now when I start a program from a terminal I can't use that terminal instance again until I close the program.
I am a new user of linux, and I want to know if there is a way to execute a program/application from a terminal without blocking the terminal until the program ends.

I cloned one of my hard drives to another, using Acronis True Image Home 2011.In the process, of course, fstab got copied verbatim from old to new.I then, using a livecd on a flash drive, mounted the new drive, went into fstab and rewrote the UUID's, using the numbers I'd gotten previously by doing sudo blkid.Now, the new drive had the UUID's revealed by that command.Then, I used boot-repair, from yannubuntu, to make that drive bootable, since it wasn't after the cloning and after the fstab rewrite.The drive is bootable, and it's mountable from a flash drive, or from the old drive.
I can access files either way.the fstab file on the new drive still has the old numbers, yet when I ran boot-repair, it apparently changed the UUID's for sectors 1 and 5 on the new drive.fstab seems to be irrelevant at this point, yet everything I read about it indicates that it is not only relevant, but necessary.I don't understand how I can be accessing the drive when the fstab contains UUID's that are no longer pertinent to any hardware on my system.

I'm currently on a work trip with my Asus G72GX laptop for non-work use (I'm posting from my work laptop). Yesterday, I accidentally booted into my laptop's recovery partition (from the Grub2 bootloader). Before I realized that that's what was happening, it booted into some kind of recovery program which ended up in an error. I restarted the laptop and couldn't get into the bootloader anymore. Now, the only thing that comes up is an error -- "error: unknown filesystem." Below that, it gives me the "grub rescue>" prompt. Most of the commands that sites list for grub rescue only return "Unknown command". ls works and lists all of my partitions: (hd0), (hd0,msdos, (hd0,msdos7), etc. down to msdos1. When I "ls (hd0,msdos" (etc, etc) it says "error: unknown filesystem."
I then started looking into booting from a Live Ubuntu USB drive. I've tried 11.04 and 10.04 now and they both do the same thing. I put them on an 8GB flash drive (only 1 at any given time) using Universal USB Installer and was able to get to the Ubuntu menu (Run Ubuntu from this USB, Install Ubuntu on a Hard Disk, etc.) If I try either "Run Ubuntu" or "Install Ubuntu", the screen flickers and comes right back to that menu.BTW, my 3 operating systems are: Windows 7 HP 64-bit, Mythbuntu 10.10 64-bit, and Windows XP 32-bit. Laptop hardware: Core 2 Duo P8700 2.53GHz, 6GB RAM, Nvidia 8800 GTX video card.

I've apparently changed my fstab file and now my boot drive fails to mount. The original file is still there "fstab.BAK". How do I rename the current fstab to another name and rename the fstab.BAK to fstab? Since this is read only in the /etc directory I have not been able to make this happen from a command prompt.

I am using OpenSuSe 11.3 and Xfce. When i start my Xfce session, in left down corner I can see useful terminal with logs. Propably it is /var/log/message or something. When I use Remote Administration (VNC) this terminal is missing.
1. Where can I find configuration file or command which is starting this terminal ?
2. How to start it under VNC session?

I have a serious problem! I can not access ubuntu!
I wanted to customize the login window, and went on "System -> Administration -> Login Window" and I click "unlock" and I changed something (I do not remember), then I restarted the computer and all was well, but it appeared a black screen with two lines written, but it is too fast, I can not read what is written, and then pop the login screen, and when I put my login and password and click on enter I released a screen "terminal" at the top right.

I'm sure this answer is out there but I cannot find it. I thought there was a command you could put in the terminal to find out what version of Fedora you are running and also tell which architecture (either 32 bit or 64 bit) it is. Does anyone know what that command is?

I removed my main panel this morning, which meant I lost all the launcher icons like the Terminal, places, system, etc. I right-clicked and selected New Panel, but when I select Add to Panel, it doesn't offer me the ability to put these items back on. The list included Clock, Weather, Garbage and Desktop, but doesn't include the others. I can't relaunch the Terminal. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, as without terminal or application access, obviously the my system functionality is pretty limited.

i just installed ubuntu on my old dell inspiron 4000 laptop. I don't seem to be able to create a new folder in my system files. I know I have to do this in the terminal as root, but I always get the answer that it cannot create the directory because there is no such file or directory. i have been using ubuntu for just over 3 months now and i completely love it. but heres where the problem starts (and please let me know if i am in the right topic) i recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my roommates computer, the reason being is that the IT department here on college "fixed it" for him, now it wont connect to the internet. it will however connect if we use an ethernet cable from the other laptop to his. his had originally windows xp then got upgraded to vista. i was wondering if there was a way to completely reset the networking wifi card if that might be the problem.
my roommates computer is a DakTech PlaidBook, however i do not know on how to check the system information in the terminal to tell you what wifi card he has and such, all i want is to have internet back on his computer again.
