This procedure works well in Windows, but in Linux where I use wvdial, I dont get prompted for this unlock code. Does anyone know how to insert the unlock code in Linux using any Linux tool (GAMMU/GNOKII/Minicom etc)?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI am working on a friend's computer for which he "lost" the operating system. This friend has very little extra money right now, so my classmate suggested I try loading Linux on my friend's PC.I am wondering if it will work. The PC is a Compaq Presario SR5610F with an AMD processor. I have been told that Linux doesn't care much for AMD.Does anybody know if it will be possible to use Linux as an OS on this PC?I'm looking for a cheap(er) alternative than Windows. Friend is balking at Windows 7. The machine had Vista loaded in it when purchased, then the son loaded XP on it, without removing Vista. They have been having issues with crashing for some time now. The recovery disks are supposed to have XP on them, but I don't think that is so, and when I tried running those disks, the computer balked. I finally worked around and got XP to install, using a disk from an old computer, but the code would not work, and nobody could remember the computer's password and user name.I want to start fresh with this machine, and install a basic, working OS. Am leary about XP on eBay or some such, but they really don't have the funds to purchase anything over $100.00.

What is the difference between linux 2.6.35-22 and 2.6.32-25? The 2.6.35-22 option froze once on login, I have never experienced any trouble with the 2.6.32-25 option.
So what is the difference between the two? Do i need both? If not, which one should I remove and how?
I have a netbook, L500X Geode (498MHz) 480Mb Ram and 40Gb Hdd partitioned into two 20 Gb bits, and I want to install linux on it as a dual boot along side the winxp that is already in place. I tried the Netbook remix of the latest Ubuntu and Fedora 12 with no success at all. I'm beginning to wonder if this tiny old machine can run linux at all.

I am going to buy new computer, will assemble it myself. I have searched extensively this forum and finally at least decided on PSU, Corsair VX450 which is available in India also. I want to do these 3 things on my new computer:
Browse internet.
Do Programming (C, Lisp, Emacs) on Arch/Debian Linux.
Play 1080p/720p HD/Blu-Ray videos with 6000kbps bitrate.
No games and no Windows
I already have Samsung SyncMaster 2243LNX monitor and a SONY DVD-ROM. Now I need to decide on other components like CPU, MOBO, Case, HDD. Searching forums make me convince on WD HDD and Gigabyte MOBO. Regarding CPU I am still confused on AMD vs Intel. I have understood that I don't need 4-Cores, 2 core will suffice my needs.
Many CPUs come with promotion that they can be overclocked and play games faster. The black edition of Phenom II X4/X6 can be overclocked up to 5GHz.Linux boasts of using minimum hardware requirements. So, does it mean overclocking is needless for linux? Many people said overclocking can harm your CPU, but those who did it said that as long as you can make sure its temperature is not overheating, it is worthy to do it to enhance your PC's performance.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a question, that may be super dumb as I couldn't find anything related while searching. But is it possible to run Linux with a window manager without GTK+ or Qt and still have a graphical web browser, music/movieplayer? I ask because I am trying to load a slim, streamlined linux without any part of KDE or Gnome for my eeepc 1000.Unfortunately a lot of apps seem to require GTK+ or Qt (which I believe requires some part of Gnome or KDE respectively). I would like to keep it as slim as possible. If it is not possible to completely separate from the toolkits I will look into deciding on which one would best fit my needs. Currently I have LXDE Salix OS and it seems to be doing OK. Although, to be honest I find even LXDE kind of busy for the little screen.I'd like to dual boot straight Slackware with Fluxbox or Openbox and one or two dockapps or some such to monitor battery, network connections and a clock.

View 3 Replies View RelatedIs it correct to assume that I can install many versions of Linux on a PC, provided for each Linux I set up a separate ext4 partition, and GRUB will let me select which OS to load? If so then:
1. I do not have to set up a separate SWAP partition for each Linux, do I? Will one SWAP serve all the OS?
2. If I wanted my /home directory to reside on a separate partition so that my data will not be lost if I reinstall Linux, do I have to create a separate /home partition for every Linux? Or they can share one?
