Hardware :: Building New Linux Box

I am going to buy new computer, will assemble it myself. I have searched extensively this forum and finally at least decided on PSU, Corsair VX450 which is available in India also. I want to do these 3 things on my new computer:
Browse internet.
Do Programming (C, Lisp, Emacs) on Arch/Debian Linux.
Play 1080p/720p HD/Blu-Ray videos with 6000kbps bitrate.
No games and no Windows
I already have Samsung SyncMaster 2243LNX monitor and a SONY DVD-ROM. Now I need to decide on other components like CPU, MOBO, Case, HDD. Searching forums make me convince on WD HDD and Gigabyte MOBO. Regarding CPU I am still confused on AMD vs Intel. I have understood that I don't need 4-Cores, 2 core will suffice my needs.

if anyone of you have shifted using Paid Red Hat Linux with CentOS, and what are your experiences of moving from Paid Linux to Unpaid Linux CenOS. When do you suggest a person use Paid Linux and when to use Unpaid Linux?

I have learnt that the network locked huawei modems may be unlocked to use any sim card bu getting a special unlock code and it should ask for it when a "foreign" SIM card is inserted. This procedure works well in Windows, but in Linux where I use wvdial, I dont get prompted for this unlock code. Does anyone know how to insert the unlock code in Linux using any Linux tool (GAMMU/GNOKII/Minicom etc)?

I am having trouble building vim with gui from source on Fedora 13. I am using
Code:
./configure --enable-gui=auto --with-features=huge --prefix=$HOME/myvim
but I get
Quote:
checking for X... (cached) no
checking if X11 header files can be found... no
checking --enable-gui argument... no GUI support.
I have installed GTK and X11 dev packages. What's missing?

I'm building from source because the packaged Vim doesn't have all the features I want.

I have been meaning to do this for awhile. I have a relatively decent machine currently running FreeNAS, a BSD based NAS system. It works great as a NAS box, but now I want it to do more. I want it to act as a file server/NAS, also as a router for my home network, so obviously I will add a second ethernet port as well as wireless "N" capability. As a router, I want to have fine control over my home computers. And, I have a multiple camera security setup, using Motion, that I want to run on this machine 24/7. I know Motion doesn't take a huge amount of horsepower, since I am currently running it on an inexpensive laptop running Squeeze.
What I would like advice on is how some other people on this forum would accomplish this. FreeNAS works great for what it was designed for, as well as IPCop, but neither will do all that I want, so I plan to run Debian on it, most likely Squeeze, as it will soon be Stable.

I am returning to Ubuntu as my primary OS. For this, I am building a new system (I have a beast of a Windows desktop, but retiring that as an HTPC and building a new desktop). Will be moving some items from the Windows desktop like the speakers, keyboard/mouse, monitors, etc, that will not serve with the HTPC configuration. Basically, this is what I am building (amost identical to my current Windows machine, except it's a Core2Quad and has 12GB of RAM):
i7-860
P55 chipset motherboard
8GB of RAM
system/boot volume volume 2x64GB 2nd gen 64GB SSDs in RAID0 (have hardware garbage collection so will run find in RAID)
[code]....
Video Card: with 10.04, should I go with ATI or nVidia for a card? Am running triple monitors, and will be gaming using Cross-Games and Cedega. Which drivers between the two manufacturers is performing the best and would be best for gaming/multiple monitors.
RAID Card: The 2320 says it has native support in the 2.6.25 kernel. I get good speeds (500-600 MB/sec on both the SSDs and the RAID5) and no troubles with it on the Win Desktop. Should I have any issues with it under 10.04 or would there be a suggestion in the <$350 price range to replace it with? Or, would running the ICH10R off the motherboard work with the alternate CD?
SSD Setup: What partitions would be best to keep off the SSD volume and on the RAID5? I know /tmp, /home, /var, and /swap should be kept off the SSDs to reduce the excessive writes. Any other suggestions? With a 128GB system/boot volume, what would you do for partition sizes there?
Sound Card: Is the Omega supported under 10.04? Or another suggestion for good 7.1 surround sound?

Do I undersatnd correct? If you build LAN with several Linux PCs and no DHCP server, you will need to configure every computer yourself. But if you add one more PC to this LAN which is DHCP server, all you need is to configure this DHCP server and write in config files of other computers to use DHCP, network will work without configuring other computers?

I am trying to figure out the best server configuration for the following:Low power (I want to plug the server in and forget about it)High redundancy of data (I don't want to loose my music and documents!)The ability to stream music + movies to laptop (maybe subsonic or Jinzora)VPN server with IPsec or OpenVPN NAS $800 budget 2TB with ability to add more drives :Unix Server with software RAID (maybe RAID6)
VPN setup on virtual OS via VirtualBox
NAS setup on virtual OS via VirtualBox
My Questions:What would be the best raid configuration if I wanted at least 2TB of data and the ability to add more disks when the space begins to add up?What would be the best OS to use for setting up a software RAID (is a FakeRAID a better solution)?Does it make more sense to separate the VPN and NAS with different OS's?My goal will be to access my data from any computer from anywhere but mostly just my Laptop from work.

I'm trying to build boost on a 64-bit CentOS 5.4 install. I have Python 2.6.4 built and installed at /opt/Python_2.6.4/, and I've appended the user-config.jam file with:
using python : 2.6 : /opt/Python_2.6.4/python : /opt/Python_2.6.4/Include : /opt/Python_2.6.4/Lib ;
The standard system Python is 2.4.1 but the tools I'm using require 2.6, so I've built this version and installed it independently of the system version 2.4.1 to avoid any conflicts.
As I'm sure you've already imagined, I get the error:
LONG_BIT definition appears wrong for platform (bad gcc/glibc config?)
I see that this is a long standing bug, but I have yet to find a fix. I've tried various CCFLAGS, CXXFLAGS, etc. to push for a 64-bit compile or a 32-bit compile (-m64 or -m32).
The offending file is pyport.h - is there a 64-bit friendly version that I don't know about?

The thing that I don't know how to do is make it default to KDM when it boots rather than GDM. Also I need a way to get rid of the GNOME apps in the menus in KDE and the KDE apps in the menus in GNOME. Also, this system in running Fedora 11 x86_64

Is this src tree "intended" to be rebuilt?
I'm trying to compile an "EXPERIMENTAL" module (w/in the tree already) USBIP so this seems to be my ONLY recourse. I do not have the ability to connect the machine to the net, nor bring in things like non-professionally burned CD's nor flash drives...

I want to be able to create a Dialog (similar to the one for Winetricks, run it without parameters to see it) with a checklist that tells my script to go out and download whatever scripts of mine I've selected. I also wish to make a GUI for some of my more complex scripts, such as my Backup script so I can have a nice looking menu instead of a text based one.Does anybody know a good place to learn how to do this, with lots of explanations and breakdowns of each part of the script?

I'm starting the process of purchasing parts for a desktop. My target price range is $300-$400. I want to be able to comfortably run a modern linux-based operating system, but do not necessarily need an advanced system. It will be used for internet (including videos on hulu.com), office related tasks, and some light editing of standard definition mpeg4 video. I'd like some room to potentially do upgrades and updates in the future. I'm looking for any kind of suggestions or advice that might be helpful, because I've never done anything like this before.
Here are the parts and approximate prices that I've found so far, shopping primarily on pricegrabber.com. Again, feel free to comment on anything. Intel DG41TY motherboard - $70 (X4500 G

I was using amarok fine with 10.04, upgraded to 10.10 alpha, still worked fine. Decided alpha had a few bugs I didn't like so I completely removed it, installed 10.04 from scratch again (I have two partitions, / and /home, only formatted /). Now I can't get amarok to build for me at all. It plays mp3's no problem but when I try to build my collection it pretends to (takes a few minutes but goes relatively fast compared to what it should take to build) then shows 0 songs. I've already tried deleting amarok inside of /home/user/.kde/share/apps/amarok
