Software :: Make - Building Project With Different Linker And Compiler?
Jun 7, 2011
I am trying to recompile a large open source project with the Nvidia Cuda Compiler: 'nvcc' [URL].. nvcc supports all the compile flags that gcc does but not all of the linking options. This shouldn't be a problem however as nvcc generates object files that are compatible with gcc and I should hence be able to compile with nvcc and then link with gcc (linking against the CUDA library).
To compile with nvcc I use:
./configure CC=nvcc
Which successfully creates make files that se nvcc to compile. But the Configuration script does not seem to honor LD=gcc in the same way, ie: ./configure CC=nvcc LD=gcc still tries to link everything with nvcc which promptly fails because nvcc does not support the option '-soname' without which the project will not link correctly. What am I doing wrong? How can tell the config script to link with gcc?

I am trying to build a gcc 4.4.3 cross-compiler. I downloaded the gcc 4.4.3 release, uncompressed it, made a new directory called gccbuild and cd'd there. I have already installed gmp, mpfr, and mpc in /usr/local. These are the commands I used:
Code:
configure --target=arm-linux --enable-languages=c --with-gmp=/usr/local --with-mpfr=/usr/local --with-mpc=/usr/local
make
However, the build fails with
Code:
checking for arm-linux-gcc... /home/steven/gccbuild/./gcc/xgcc -B/home/steven/gccbuild/./gcc/ -B/usr/local/arm-linux/bin/ -B/usr/local/arm-linux/lib/ -isystem /usr/local/arm-linux/include -isystem /usr/local/arm-linux/sys-include

I have a project built on Silverlight 2.0. I installed Fedora 13 (KDE) a few days ago since I'd like to brush my Linux skills after a long Windows-only time.I installed the monodevelop package and it's dependencies. But while building this project I got the following error:
Code:
Error: Framework 'Moonlight / Silverlight 2.0' not installed.
But I can't find a Moonlight package in PackageKit. Does one exists? Should I download it from Mono Project and build it manually?

I need to compile a program and make it portable to other computers, but it needs some external libraries and I don't want them to be linked dynamically, I would like to compile them as one single executable or at least compile them in the same directory as the main output files. The program is sphinx>, it has its own configure and make scripts. I know I can run g++ with the -static flag, but I don't know how to do this with make or configure. This is the ./configure --help output

I am trying to build a cross GCC compiler for PPC476. I applied all the relevant patches. Cross compiler build was successful. When I try to compile the source code using the cross compiler I am getting the below error message. I think this is something related to linker.

I'm building the code on remote linux machines, and it takes very long time. Since all the filesystem is on NFS, I suspect the NFS is the bottleneck. Can I profile the build process (make all) down to system read/write calls? Or simply put, what tool do I need to find the bottleneck. Is strace gonna help?

Consider that I am building my application in Linux shell using make command but somehow the build fails. Is there any way I can find out that the build has failed (of course looking at shell for error messages will do the job for me but I don't want that). Is there any flag make or shell will set/reset if such failure occurs ?

I recently bought a pci multi io card to give my pc 2 parallel ports. For Linux, Moschip supply the source plus makefile and instructions. I ran make as root and got an error message
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop/build/: No such file or directory. So I created a folder called build in /lib/modules/2.6.31.12-0.2-desktop but that isn't good enough as I still get an error cannot make target modules. So I assume there must be something in the build folder. So what packages do I have to install to get the correct environment to be able to build the driver? Has anyone done this and can supply the driver for 11.2?

So for those of you who has built GCC from source would know that you can't install GCC without an existing GCC. So my question is, what would happen if all computers in the world suddenly just died, and all you had was the computer in front of you, and a copy of GCC 4.5. How would you install that?
I ask because I would like to install GCC 4.5 on my old powerbook G4 mac without installing a binary GCC provided by Tiger 10.4 disks. I would like to build GCC from source, without an existing GCC to complicate updating.

install a newly compiled linker as the default linker on my VM running Ubuntu. I compiled and installed a new custom kernel on my VM (linux-2.6.36) and also compiled (not install) a custom gnu c library (glibc-2.11.2) on the newly installed custom kernel. I am able to run a simple helloworld.c program to verify that my program worked successfully using the newly build dynamic linker in the /elf directory.
I want to replace the real linker inside /lib with the new linker that I compiled. I tried to make the soft link named ld-linux-x86-64.so.2 that originally points to the real linker file ld-2.11.1.so, point to my newly compiled linker, but my VM crashed. I also tried moving the compiled linker and wrote it over the original linker, and the VM crashed. None of the commands worked after that as they could not access any of the shared libraries and I received this error '/bin/bash: No such file or directory'. I also tried to change the LD_LIBRARY_PATH to point to my linker and did not have any luck there either.

I first found something called lds(linker script) file.
And now I am willing to do a test with __attribute__((section)) to make a function stay in a private section. Sounds fun to me.
Part of my source code looks like this
By objdump, I didn't find a section called "my_own".
