Software :: KDE Crashes When Windows Too Small (quick Tile, Firefox, Konsole)?
Apr 18, 2011
I'm running KDE 4.6.00 on openSuSE 11.4. The system is nearly perfect in my mind, minus some weird KDE crashes. I've set the meta+left/right keys to perform the "quick tile" operation. When I have a firefox (or konsole) window tiled on the left or right half of my screen, un-tiling it (for example, pressing meta+left when it is tiled to the right) will sometimes cause the window to become too small to see. In about 90% of the times that this happens, the program crashes. In case this is not clear, I'm starting with a window which is tiled on half of my screen, and I want to either move it to the other half, or just get it to the not-tiled state in the middle of my screen, then it shrinks, and usually crashes.
I tried setting the startup geometry for both konsole and firefox. Otherwise, I'm at a loss. I can avoid the problem by manually resizing a quick-tiled window from half-screen size to something smaller, in lieu of using the meta+right/left keys to undo the quick-tile and put it in the center of the screen

I just switched to OpenSUSE/KDE4 from Ubuntu/Gnome2. Overall, I am very pleased. However, I have an issue that I have been unable to resolve. That is, Firefox, Thunderbird and Konsole Terminal do not have maximize buttons in their titlebars and there is not any other way to maximize these windows. Also, if I right click on the task manager tab for those applications then the "Maximize" menu item in the context menu is grayed out so it is inaccessible too. The bottom line is that there is no way to maximize these windows. All other applications, such as Dolphin, Chromium, Konqurer, LibreOffice, etc. have maximize buttons and a "maximize" menu item in their task manager context menus. Then, why don't Firefox, Thunderbird and Konsole also have maximize buttons? I am using the Oxygen theme and have configured the buttons on the Oxygen theme to include the Maximize button.

I routinely use Firefox's quick find feature. I press the slash key, /, type what I want to find on the page and it searches as I type. I love it. It's very convenient. But it doesn't work anywhere on this page.

I'd try here first, since I am running slackware, though it's a firefox problem ... To verify bug, just go into a KDE konsole xterm, and do
[13:35 ~]$ mkdir ~/ffbug
[13:35 ~]$ touch ~/ffbug/_$'31'_
[13:35 ~]$ firefox file://$(echo ~)/ffbug &
(This assumes you didn't already have a ~/ffbug directory, and you have firefox 3.5.6 installed -- the prior firefox id not have this problem) What you will probably see is firefox trying to display a listing of the ~/ffbug directory, but instead showing an error message: XML Parsing Error: not well-formed. I posted this in the mozillazine forum, where it got read 20 times, but no response.

I recently upgraded (via Ubuntuzilla) to firefox 3.5.7 and now, every single time I close Firefox, the program seems to crash without quitting completely.
First, I receive an error saying that the program will not close and asks me if I want to Force Quite or Wait for it to close on its own. This has been happening ever since I upgraded to Karmic and if I just wait it usually quits fully after a couple seconds.
Now what happens is this: the window still closes, but if I try to reopen Firefox then I get this error stating that Firefox is already open and therefore cannot be opened again. The only way to get back into Firefox is to restart the entire computer. (Incidentally, this is the same problem that occurs whenever I try to Force Quit Firefox)
This now happens every single time I "close" Firefox.
Does anyone know the source of this error? Or a workaround?

This may seem to be a silly question, but I googled along
and found that most of relevant complaints was about
a bug in video card driver.
My problem is -
For some unknown reason, I can't resize the Konsole window horizontally while I can still resize vertically. This is bad as the corrent width of Konsole window fills the entire screen!

When I open a terminal or konsole window, output (either STDOUT or STDERR) sometimes contains funny characters instead of something meaningful. Can someone explain how I might correct this situation?
ANALYSIS:
One very repeatable example involves using the manual page command
Code:
man set... man page output ...upstart - event-based init daemon
In my copy of the output, there are several problems in the very first screen. In the synopsis section, there is "{ value | ?value? ..." Replace the '?' with a lower-case-a-under-a-carat character (a-hat).
I suspect the garble character might be apostrophe in real life.
In other places, I see var?/able or how?/ever or trans?/action where the '?' is again a-hat and the '/' represents end of line or newline. I suspect the garble character might be a hyphen in real life.
All of this suggests that there is a conflict between the character stream written to STDOUT by the man command and the character-display settings (is that "code page" or similar?) of the specific terminal or konsole in use.
In specific, I use konsole v1.6.6 from KDE v3.5.10. In general, I'm running Ubuntu Hardy (v8.04.3 LTS).

I just recently move from win 7 to opensuse, and still new on linux. just wondering if there is solution for thin font on firefox. I already search google for solution, the best solution so far is to lower screen resolution to 1024x768 (I prefer 1280x800).
Other tempt I tried are:
1. install freetype2, but the setting in "about:config" page on firefox aren't there. already try to create new boolean, but no effect at all.
2. install dejavu font and use it on firefox, but the font is still thin.
3. set minimum font size to 18. easier to read, but too big and messing up with website layout.
currently I'm using:
-dejavu font, minimum font size 18
-allow web to use own font (enable)
here's screenshot: [url]

My firefox icon in ubuntu appear as a small pinned white paper. But when I click on it, it launches the browser without any problems.It was like that in Lucid Lynx too. But My karmic had the proper firefox logo.Can anyone help me in getting my icon back?
Some one had told me that it would be there on the following directory.
/usr/share/icons/balanzan/scalable/apps and select firefox.png.
But I couldn't find it there.
There was no balanzan folder inside icons. I could find scalable folder inside default.kde4 folder.
/usr/share/icons/default.kde4/scalable/apps/
But there no firefox.png.

I'm looking for a programmable way to open an editor with a small window size. For example 60 columns and 3 lines. So I need an editor that can take its initial window size from command line args or environment variables, or possibly from an initial command that can be given on the command line.I've looked at documentation and experimented with gedit, gvim (and vi & vim), and nano and I don't think any of them can be controlled this way. Vi and its friends have a "window" option and also a "resize" command, both of which are described as setting the number of rows, but they don't change the graphical window size they just change the number of rows displayed in the window.

I have a problem with Lubuntu. First of all I installed it on my old laptop (amd sempron 1.6GHz, 512MB ram, s3g vga) as windows seemed to slow down my system. Installation was good, but the problem is screen resolution which is only 800x600 and there is no higher res option. Laptop's native is 1024x768. I searched a lot about how to change it but there is no post for lubuntu (everything is for ubuntu, xubuntu, and doesn't seem to work in here). Beyond that isse i I feel Lubuntu is running much better than windows and I want to use it. Using Lubuntu 11.04. Let me add that when I tried Lubuntu 10.04 it didn't have this problem (all resolutions where available).

I have verified using yum that I have the most uptodate glut, freeglut, freeglut-devel etc., yet when I compile Example 2-6 from the Red Book at http://www.glprogramming.com/red/chapter02.html#name16, I get a window that is too small for the program output, includes display from other windows, and will not redraw after being resized.
I get slightly better behavior with the SGI sample program mentioned in the same book, 'checkers.c'. Again, the initial size is too small, but at least it will resize and redraw the checkerboards entirely inside the resized window. What is going on here? Is this some bug in glut? I can't see anything obviously wrong in their glut initialization, which looks like:
int main(int argc, char** argv)
{
glutInit(&argc, argv);
glutInitDisplayMode (GLUT_SINGLE | GLUT_RGB);
glutInitWindowSize (350, 150);
[code]...
Then again, since I am such a newbie to glut, I am not sure I would recognize what, if anything, they did wrong. what ARE the valid and useful command line parameters I could have passed to the main() above?

I am running Ubuntu 10.04, up to date, 32 bits. I tried to open a huge (10.000 x 1.200 pixels approx) Wikipedia image, and everything crashed. Nor Firefox, Gnome or anything else responded from there. Not even ctrl+alt+del, ctrl+alt+backspace, alt+F2, etc. Only the mouse moves, but rather slowly.
This is the image:

I could NOT replicate the problem with Chromium. However, I am not sure if the issue is only firefox since it locks up everything in ubuntu.

After upgrading Ubuntu from 10.10 to 11.04, my firefox regularly crashes.
Today I started firefox from the console, and I got the following error code...
I don't know if this problem arose from dbus.
Can anyone here help me resolve the problem?

Recently my Firefox 5.0 started to crash randomly. This morning, it crashed twice within three minutes. I believe that it crashes mostly during loading something (such as a new tab), but it can also just crash when nothing is being done to it. I can be reading one page of text and it crashes. When it crashes, there is a "Submit a report" thing. When I click Restart Firefox, it doesn't. What I can think of is the use of Flash-aid and the addition of a 4GB bar of RAM. I re-executed Flash-aid because 1080p full-screen was choppy (still is). I don't think it is a Flash problem since with Gnash, Firefox also crashes. The RAM bar is a Lexar 4GB DDR3 SODIMM 1066-1333MHz. All other programs run correctly. I have re-installed Firefox, Firefox-branding and such in Synaptic. Still crashes.

I've installed SuSE 64 11.3 (with updates) as a new installation 4 times because of video driver problems. On the 3rd installation Firefox crashes. I had no difficulties with 11.2 with the same hardware. I followed CAF's suggestion to another user to add it to the repo list and run a zypper install. No difference. I've added no new hardware. I then re-installed SuSE and made no changes to any setting or driver, but again, no Firefox continues to crash.
HARDWARE:
Video card: ATI HD 5870 running I believe at 1920x1200
1366 CPU 2.8 GHz
MB: Asus P6X58D Premium
Ram: 6 gb

Upgraded from 11.2 to 11.3 without any issues. However the newer version of Firefox keeps crashing and bringing down 11.3! It's a complete system crash with absolutely no warning, although it looks like 11.3 is trying to send the TERM signal before the pc shuts down.I have other browsers for my work, and both Opera and SeaMonkey work perfectly.Konquerer also works perfectly.
