i have slackware 12.0 and kernel 2.6.21.5.LILO was the natural choice off of the CD set to load Linux.now, i want to load windows into a non-formatted partition on the HDD.i understand though, that windows will overwrite the MBR and put NT stuff in there thus wipeing out my access to Linux .i can't find the thread that deals with where to move LILO so that the Windows installation routine does NOT wipe out the MBR and LILO along with it,

Just installed Slackware 13.37 and am trying to get dual boot to work properly. I have edited /etc/lilo.conf to point the Windows section to what I believe should be the correct partition (/dev/sda2) Here is the relevant section

I have mounted /dev/sda2 to /ntfs-c as suggested during install and when I browse through there I see the files from my windows setup so it is in fact the correct partition. When I load Windows on boot, however, it is pointing to the recovery partition (/dev/sda1).

I am running LiLo for the first time from my MBR..I seem to like it very much ..In fact i want LiLo to load other Kernels (Ubuntu 10.10) Also I was surprised when it detected my drive and activated the LBA32option...GRUB2 also had a problem accessing my drive beyond the BIOS limit (149GB is seen by BIOS wheras I have 160GB) I am not sure but want to see if LiLo can succeed in reading partition beyond 1024 cylinder limit. How do I modify lilo.conf to add Ubuntu Kernel and Image?

My problems connecting to DSL are caused by not having the linux-atm-lib file.
After downloading the file and trying to run it, the error message is: Could not find RPM package in pool.
Where is the RPM package?
This is a new install. So far everything seems to work except DSL connection.

I have a PC with 2 Hard drives one of which has Windows XP Pro installed. I installed Red Hat Linux 7.2 on the other drive choosing LILO as the boot loader. When I reboot LILO only displays Red Hat 7.2 When I boot Red Hat and go into KDE boot settings I can see that hda has Windows NT. hdb has Red Hat 7.2. I then tried to make the Windows NT partition the default entry. When I try to confirm this an error displays warning me of danger if I proceed. Is there any way to make LILO recognize Windows (preferably without having to reinstall Red Hat), perhaps by installing another bootloader application!

I have a WD 80GB ATAPI hard disk for my operatings systems.
The partition table is :
First i installed Windows and then Slackware.
The problem is that in MBR , looks that lilo never installed and when my pc starts, the lilo menu never load it . Boots directly to windows.
What i should do, in order to have the lilo menu in startup?

I'm familiar with editing Grub's "menu.lst" file to add additional OS's to the boot list. Does Slackwares Lilo have a similar config file ? I need to add a second physical drive with Windows 7 on it to the boot options in Lilo. If it's not a config file, how do I add a second os to it ? Slack and Windows are both already installed on two different physical drives so I won't be installing, I just need to add the Windows drive to Lilo.

I'm fairly new to linux, and a few days ago, as I was updating my system, I got the "EBDA is big ; kernel setup stack overlaps LILO second stage" error after reboot. I use a 3- boot, ( Win XP / Debian / Debian) and Windows XP works fine, but I can't launch any of the Debian. I googled the message, and I found this link :

The only problem problem is that when I try to chroot, I got another message, "chroot: failed to run command `/bin/bash': No such file or directory" I googled this message too, but found no relevant answers. I am now using a knoppix usb drive to try to repair the lilo, but I ran out of ideas ...

I am currently running a dual boot machine with Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows Vista.Is there any way I can delete the Linux partition and Grub boot loader without affecting the Windows partition at all?I would also like to be able to repartition all of the space that was previously occupied by Linux.

i have just installed Ubuntu 10.10 on a pre installed windows 7 system. Ubuntu is working really well but the only problem is that when I try to boot into windows,
I get the windows sign and then I get a black screen and windows does not load. It seems to be an easy problem to solve because I can actually boot windows 7 in
safe mode with no problems at all! The problem is there when I try to boot windows 7 normally. To be honest I only need windows for a project that uses MSQL server.

I have a sitution that I am trying to set up.I have 2 email servers that run on Windows: one is for internal purposes, the other is external purposes.The external one will receive e-mail from the outside world, clean it up and forward it to the internal one.There are 2 Windows Vista machines and 2 Unix (OpenSuse Linux) machines.Since there can be only 1 email server per domain, I thought I would:
-> set up a local domain with ALL of the machines in it
-> set up a DNS server for the local domain
-> set up a MX record in the DNS server for the email
For the external machine, just have a Dynamic IP point to the Windows machine holding the external email server.Does this sound plausible? Does this make sense?How can one fix it so that a DNS under Suse is accessible from Windows?

I have a client in Pittsburgh that has a Mac server and a Linux (RHEL) server on a LAN. They have a Netgear FVS 318v3 router on which they had a VPN running. They could do this because they had the router configured for IP-SEC and they only had Mac laptops as clients. I'm told Mac laptops can be configured to connect to IP-SEC VPNs, but Linux (I have Ubuntu) clients cannot.
I'm told that we need an PPTP VPN, and that the Netgear can not act as an endpoint, but can pass PPTP traffic to one of the servers if we set them up as a PPTP server.
We hired two different network consultants to set up the VPN, but neither one is able to set up a VPN to allow both the Mac and Linux laptops to connect.
Why is this so difficult? Lots of companies have VPNs that allow any client to connect.
Would it be better for us to purchase a different router that can act as a PPTP endpoint?
Do I want the router to act as a PPTP endpoint, or would it be better for me to use the Netgear and set up a PPTP service on one of the servers? Or, is there some better solution?

I'm currently dual-booting Ubuntu 11.04 and Windows 7, and I'm looking to uninstall Ubuntu and only using Windows. I know i have to remove the linux partitions and Grub and reinstall windows but i dont have a windows CD because my computer just has a recovery partition and i dont see how i could boot it without Grub.

I have Debian 8 with VBoxGuestAdditions (4.3.18). I can connect to this box from Win7 using RDP (mstsc.exe). When I connect from Windows 10 using mstsc.exe I've got error code 2308. I tried NoMachine, 2XClient, RoyalTS none worked.
W10 connecting with RDP to Linux server? If I would install xrdp onto the Linux server would it work for me?
Is it possible to connect from Win10 to Linux using RDP?

I have a SBS '08 server, and it handles all FSMO roles, and every service known to man. I'm trying to shift those to other computers, but we haven't got the capital for another server. I know Linux is a capable OS and has the ability to run DNS, but I'm not too familiar with linux. How could I set up DNS on linux so that it is a redundant DNS server?

I would like to be able to map on my laptop a directory of my Linux server.I try into Windows to map is using \MYIPdirectory name and Its not working.SAMBA is install and working as if my laptop is connected on my home network I can map it using my server name.But I would like to be able to also map it when i'm ouside. I installed Scientific Linux 5.0 distro on my notebook, Dell 1558 (2.27 core i5, 4G RAM, 500G HDD, 512M ATI, win7).Unfortunately, I didn't backup my data on partiotions D, E, Now, I can't re-install windows 7 because it couldn't detect proper partition!Is there any way to remove linux and re-install windows 7 (or have both on the same hard disk) so that I can access to my data on partitions D, E,.By the way, I used "partition Wizard Home Edition v5.0" to re-format the partitions, but there were just disabled options. The hard dist became "Dynamic Disk", so I couldn't do any operation. Is there any solution to convert dynamic hard to static one and don't lost it's data?

I have installed windows xp (service pack 2) on my pc. later i formatted a partition (drive E and installed ubuntu linux 8.04. I have provided 2gb space for SWAP partition and remaining for root (/).I have done this manually. Installation was completed, and ubuntu asked me to reboot the system. I did so.
Now comes my problem. I am getting some DHCP connection or some thing weird. after that i am getting a message ......and with a message asking me to press any key. the same thing is coming even after restarting the system....i am unable to see both windows and linux now!

i created an USB Ubuntu [10.04], that i want to keep with me. people sometimes ask me to hep them with all sorts of windows problems, and i wanted to have a usb linux, that i could load with all kind of tools/ software to help.So, i tried doing some research, into what would be most useful. Antivirus-wise, all the links pointed at Clam AV (i also found a pdf describing how to clean a windows drive from linux - will try that soon - if this thread gathers followers, I'll post the results).Do you have any ideas what could i install more ? different AV ? some defragmenting tool? I searched a bit, but on all kinds of forums people just said that linux did not need defragmenting. i know that, but i want a linux tool that defragments NTFS drives.

I wonder if someone could please direct me to a really simple guide to adding a Linux Mint 10 PC to a Windows XP home network that gives clear instructions for the actions to be carried out in both Linux and Windows XP? The Linux box is connected to the router by ethernet cable. Box 1: older Asus A7N8X-E deluxe w/onboard ethernet using dhcp
Box 2: new Asus M4A785-M Micro ATX w/onboard gigabit ethernet using dhcp
Laptop: Dell Studio 1745 w/Intel 5100 a/b/g wireless
Router: Linksys WRT54G set as dhcp server
Both windows boxes are set for workgroup "home"Laptop is "laptop.home"They can all connect outside to the internet but don't seem able to see each other, not even to ping each other.

I have a big archive with about 10000 documents in a usb stick. What I have noticed is that browsing of that archive with gnome is much slower with ubuntu than winXP ( dual boot , same PC ) where it is almost instant.I have disabled assistive technologies and installed Thunar file browser. It improved things but again the lag is important. Linux is in general much faster than windows, so I wonder why is it happening ?
