I installed Ubuntu on external USB hard drive and while booting I did got option to log into windows XP, Ubuntu. Both operating systems ran fine. i.e. GRUB had overwritten MBR and I was able to dual boot. Main issue: I have installed Ubuntu in external hard-drive so that I can use Linux whenever I want other people who are using same computer can operate on WindowsXP. Sometimes my external hard drive gives problem if there is loose connection and so that oper people using computer do not face any problem I want to disconnect external USB HD whenever I am not using Linux. GRUB menu was pointing to external hardrive so disconnecting it meant my system wont boot!!I rewrote MBR using WindowsXP CD recovery mode. Now I am unable to boot from external USB hard disk( I thought I would be able to if I choose USB hard drive in BIOS option but it did not work it logged into WindowsXP by default). Is there any way I can change WindowsXP boot.ini file so that it also shows Ubuntu in external hard disk? Or is there any way.(I do not want GRUB way as then I would have to keep my external drive connected to log into windows - which I do not want).

I could not get get the LG External CD R/W Drive that I recently purchased to work with my ASUS Eee Netbook (Linux based) and ended up giving the drive to a friend to use with his Windows XP based laptop. How do I make an External CD R/W Drive work with this Linux-based machine?I am an engineer (civil-structural), but not that savvy with respect to computers; particularly issues of compatibility of hardware / software.

I installed all the packages I thought I needed.... kernek-devel, gcc, make...

So I am trying to install Plastic 2.8.148.0 on a virtual server. I have the install package that i copied over to the machine using WinSCP i then gave the file executable permissions by using the command "chmod +x PlasticSCM-professional-2.8.148.0-linux-installer.bin" But when i try to install the package by using the command "sudo ./PlasticSCM-professional-2.8.148.0-linux-installer.bin" It gives me the following message.
sudo: unable to execute ./PlasticSCM-professional-2.8.148.0-linux-installer.bin - No such file or directory
why it isn't recognizing it? I know the file was there because i was able to change permissions and i can see it with -ls command.

I'm trying to get our linux servers to use Active Directory (AD), and have gotten our linux (RHEL 5) server to fetch users and groups from AD. Now I'd like to add computers (and groups of computers) to AD, and have our linux boxes make use of this info. Does anyone know how to get our linux-boxes to understand computers and computer group objects on AD?

i created an USB Ubuntu [10.04], that i want to keep with me. people sometimes ask me to hep them with all sorts of windows problems, and i wanted to have a usb linux, that i could load with all kind of tools/ software to help. So, i tried doing some research, into what would be most useful. Antivirus-wise, all the links pointed at Clam AV (i also found a pdf describing how to clean a windows drive from linux - will try that soon - if this thread gathers followers, I'll post the results).Do you have any ideas what could i install more ? different AV ? some defragmenting tool? I searched a bit, but on all kinds of forums people just said that linux did not need defragmenting. i know that, but i want a linux tool that defragments NTFS drives.

I tried to update my system from 9.10 to 10.04 but when the system boots it says that it can not find the symbol for grub_puts_ and drops me into grub rescue.
I have a live disc and have been trying to get grub to reinstall following the advice from different websites and forum threads. It seems that everything goes smooth until I get to the part where you run update-grub. At that point I get the following:
/usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / ( is /dev mounted?).
My configuration is as follows:
windows is loaded on /dev/sda1. fdisk -l lists this partition as bootable.
linux / is loaded on /dev/sdb1
/usr is loaded on /dev/sdb5
/var is loaded on /dev/sdb6
/home is loaded on /dev/sdb9
[Code]....
this is where I have problems. it says: /usr/sbin/grub-probe: error: cannot find a device for / ( is /dev mounted?).

when I try to access the shares from a Win98 laptop. The server name shows up in the Network Neighborhood (freaking childish names!) but when I double-click it, Win98 keeps asking me for the password for the \SHOPIPC$ connection. I have deleted the .pwl file on the Win98 and logged in using the same user/pass combination as I do on the Linux. On the Linux, I ran 'smbpasswd -a derek' and supplied my password.Windows XP sees the server just fine, but Windows 98 just does not want to play nice. Is there any thing that I can do to fix this without breaking the connection to the XP box or the Linux laptop?

I have noticed that ubuntu 9.10 (but also other distro and in general those that configure the network automatically at startup) crashed if my pc boot directly with a linux kernel at power on.This does not happen if the first boot is done with windows xp and then rebooting the pc and choosing the same linux kernel. Some distro (for example SysrescueCD) that does not configure the network at startup can work but also with these if I try to configure the network using the command ifconfig eth0 the system crashes. My network card is a SiS191 Ethernet and linux recognized it using sis190 module.I suppose that something happen during the first power on, some inizialization done with windows xp but does not done with linux in fact after a reboot made from windows xp without shutdown the pc, with Linux I can configure the network using ifconfig without crash.
Any ideas to solve this without have to boot always windows as first?

I have a sitution that I am trying to set up.I have 2 email servers that run on Windows: one is for internal purposes, the other is external purposes. The external one will receive e-mail from the outside world, clean it up and forward it to the internal one. There are 2 Windows Vista machines and 2 Unix (OpenSuse Linux) machines.Since there can be only 1 email server per domain, I thought I would:
-> set up a local domain with ALL of the machines in it
-> set up a DNS server for the local domain
-> set up a MX record in the DNS server for the email
For the external machine, just have a Dynamic IP point to the Windows machine holding the external email server.Does this sound plausible? Does this make sense? How can one fix it so that a DNS under Suse is accessible from Windows?

I have a client in Pittsburgh that has a Mac server and a Linux (RHEL) server on a LAN. They have a Netgear FVS 318v3 router on which they had a VPN running. They could do this because they had the router configured for IP-SEC and they only had Mac laptops as clients. I'm told Mac laptops can be configured to connect to IP-SEC VPNs, but Linux (I have Ubuntu) clients cannot.
I'm told that we need an PPTP VPN, and that the Netgear can not act as an endpoint, but can pass PPTP traffic to one of the servers if we set them up as a PPTP server.
We hired two different network consultants to set up the VPN, but neither one is able to set up a VPN to allow both the Mac and Linux laptops to connect.
Why is this so difficult? Lots of companies have VPNs that allow any client to connect.
Would it be better for us to purchase a different router that can act as a PPTP endpoint?
Do I want the router to act as a PPTP endpoint, or would it be better for me to use the Netgear and set up a PPTP service on one of the servers? Or, is there some better solution?

As I regularly move between Mac and PC, I thought it would be a good idea to put all my data on an external drive. As Windows 7 and OS X have similar home folder layouts, I just simply put all the folders I need for both on the root of the external drive and changed a few settings so that the Home folder for my user is on the external drive on both Windows and OS X.
Whilst Ubuntu also has a similar structure, I cannot work out how to have it so that my users home folder is on the external drive. I have done a little research and all I can find is how to have the /home directory on another partition. a) this is not what I'm trying to do, just the folder for my user and b) this would mean formatting the external drive to extX format, which just wouldn't work for me.
I am using 9.10 (or will be once the upgrade is complete)
