Fedora :: Error 12: Invalid Device Requested - Win 7 + F11

Dec 4, 2009

I have installed Windows 7 followed by Fedora 11. Everytime I install Fedora 11 with Win 7, the first to boot, I get BOOTMGR missing. Later I used "df -h" command to see the disk file usage fdisk -l" to see the info regarding Disk Partitions. Went into the /boot/grub/menu.lst and modified the order. I set the partition where I find the bootmgr.exe.mui, there was another file named "memtest.exe.mui in the same file.

I navigated to the above said through Fedora 11. Located inside the Win 7 installed directory /boot/en-US/

When I changed the menu.lst file, I get a new error Error 12: Invalid device requested when I tried to boot Win 7. Does that mean that Fedora 11 GRUB is not getting the bootmgr.exe.mui since its 2 levels inside the boot directory ??

General :: Dual Booting WinXP & 9.04 - Error 12: "Invalid Device Requested"

Sep 28, 2009

I had Windows 7 and Windows XP. It was 3 partitions in one HD (two OS' and one for files) and another separate HD (which doesn't have any system, it's just media files and stuff). When booted, I used to get the Windows 7 screen, that allowed me to either boot 7 or XP. I thought I had tested 7 enough and wanted to try Ubuntu, so I (from the Ubuntu CD which I downloaded and burned) deleted the 7 partition and made a 2GB swap partition, and, what was left, an Ubuntu partition on which I installed it.

Now when I boot I get an Ubuntu boot screen that shows several Ubuntu options and a WinXP option. Ubuntu works fine, but if I choose WinXP, I get "Error 12: Invalid device requested". I didn't change anything more than what I said. The details for the WinXP boot option seem to be:

rootnoverify (hd0,4)
savedefault
makeactive
chainloader++

What can I do to be able to boot WinXP again? (and also Ubuntu, whenever I want to). The only thing I can think of is using Windows XP CD's restore thing to restore the boot menu, but that would stop me from using Ubuntu...

Fedora Installation :: F12 - Invalid File Being Requested?

Feb 5, 2010

I'm trying to install Fedora 12 from a DVD created by an iso I downloaded. When the install gets to the point of actually installing files, I get a message saying that it can't find 'authconfig-gtk-6.0.0.-2.fc12.i686.rpm'. I looked at the DVD for that file and it isn't there. I found 'authconfig-gtk-5.4.13-1.fc12.i686.rpm'. Any ideas how to fix this? The DVD passed the media check at the beginning of the install. I'm not exactly a newbie in Linux as I have some experience with it.

Ubuntu :: Error: Device-mapper: Reload Ioctl Failed: Invalid Argument

Jun 13, 2010

I'm having some difficulities with truecrypt and cannot figure out what's wrong since this is my first attempt to create hidden encrypted partition. I'm using ubuntu 9.10 64b with latest 6.3a truecrypt. After using truecrypt gui (just command truecrypt) I've tried: create volume-->create volumne within a partition/drive-->hidden trucrypt volume --> select some /dev/sdX by my choice --> select aes & sha512 --> password --> and format it.

when formating finished message "wrong ss, swith or wrong superblock of /dev/loop0" appeared. I've got no idea what could I do with it neither know whats program trying to do! Ok formating's done, then if you're trying to mount that partition then I would expect prompt for password, but that did not happen ...

EDIT: sudo mount /dev/loop0 /media/tmp/ also complaint about wrong superblock, but that does not ring any bell since i've got no idea what /dev/loop0 is or is for...

EDIT2: I've tried another approach also:

sudo truecrypt -t -c
sudo truecrypt -t /dev/sda3 --filesystem=none

but the first command finished creating 100G drive in 1 sec (nonsense) and latter one prints:

Error: device-mapper: reload ioctl failed: Invalid argument
Command failed

Ubuntu Installation :: Lost Windows 7 Boot Option In Grub - Error 12: Invalid Device Request

Jan 12, 2011

I had a working dual boot Ubuntu 10 and Windows 7. Anyways long story short, I got it working again but have lost the boot option for windows 7. If i run fdisk -l, I get the following.

root@support-Latitude-E6400:/home/support# fdisk -l
Disk /dev/sda: 250.1 GB, 250059350016 bytes
255 heads, 63 sectors/track, 30401 cylinders

[code]....

I installed gparted and can see that windows 7 is installed in dev/sda6. In another forum, i read that someone had to edit their menu.lst so i did with the following.

title=Windows 7
rootnoverify (hd0,6)
makeactive
chainloader +1

When i try to boot from windows 7, i get the following error. Error 12: invalid device request. How can i get my laptop to boot from windows again?

Ubuntu :: Losetup Disk Encryption - Ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid Argument, Requested Cipher Or Key Length (128 Bits) Not Supported By Kernel

Dec 14, 2010

In 10.04 I was using the following commands to mount an encrypted disk image:

Code: sudo losetup -f Which tells what loop back device block is available Then I'd type:

Code: sudo losetup -e aes /dev/loop0 /home/user/crypt.img and then enter the device's password

Code: sudo mount -t ext4 /dev/loop0 /media/crypt I've tried this in 10.10 and it hasn't been working (I can't remember if I did anything in 10.04 to make it work). I've installed the loop-aes-utils package and restarted my machine. Every time I try the 2nd step, after entering the password I get: Code: ioctl: LOOP_SET_STATUS: Invalid argument, requested cipher or key length (128 bits) not supported by kernel

General :: Device / Special File Clairification Requested

Device/Special file Clairification Requested.I'm reading a short article on Device/special files because it is related to VFS. This article has this paragraph that has to many pronouns in it to get an understanding of. URL..."In short, a device file (also called as a special file) is an interface for a device driver that appears in a file system as if it were an ordinary file. This allows software to interact with the device driver using standard input/output system calls, which simplifies many tasks."

What does a Device file have to do with the Application and the Driver communicating? Wouldn't the order of data transfer be , Application to driver and then to Device file?

Fedora :: Error: Cannot Assign Requested Address

Jun 7, 2010

Every time I upgrade my system I run a post install script. This script made some harm to the network start that prevents sshd from starting, but I was unable to detect the problem. In my boot.log I found this:

[...]

Starting Avahi daemon... Jun 2 14:58:48 Antares kernel: ADDRCONF(NETDEV_UP): eth0: link is not ready

So there is a "bind to port 22 failed" probably caused by "eth0: link is not ready", but after the sshd init script fails the eth0 is ready...

Ubuntu Installation :: Grub And 9.04 - Error "invalid Command" Or "invalid Execution Format"

Aug 16, 2011

Bottom Line: Dvd Drive died in my toshiba laptop and it was replaced (not before tech for some reason reformatted the Win7 partition... which was 100% un-needed, but thats beside the point now. I redid win7 (the tech installed vista) and am TRYING to "redo grub". Facts: The Slackware AND Ubuntu Partitions ARE STILL THERE and when i use SuperGrub Boot CD (which doesn't restore my grub by itself) to boot into slackware, i can see ALL THE CONTENT of both Linuxes still there including grub on ubuntu partition

(Tri-Boot: Ubuntu, Slackware, and WIn7) I had it working for two years or so, SO i know this "setup" works fine. I am A) Trying to do this as simply as possible. B) Trying to avoid the need to download a 800MB ISO (as seen for this issue on this forum) and trying not to have to reformat Ubuntu Partition (though I have the .Debs I have downloaded for it backed up ... all 1.7GB of them) I have /dev/sda1 as win7, /dev/sda2 as Slack and /dev/sda3 as Ubuntu (which contains Grub Legacy).. Every command I do seems to result in an error like "invalid command" or "invalid Execution format " (i think that second one is right) type errors. I compiled (awhile back) a few kernels for Slackware, but feel goofy that I cant figure what i this out (what i thought was going to be a "2 minute" fix)

Ubuntu Installation :: Display Error Notification 'Could Not Apply The Stored Configuration For Monitors X Server Does Not Support Size Requested' On Bootup

May 8, 2010

Since upgrading to Lucid, I am getting the following dialog warning on login: 'Could not apply the stored configuration for monitors X Server does not support size requested' Im using the current proprietary NVIDIA graphics driver with dual heads. My display is fine, but the warning every time I login is annoying. After googling around I found this thread: [URL]. I tried going to Monitor Preferences as suggested. My resolution as displayed in the default tool is set to 3840 x 1200, which I suspect is the issue forcing the dialog, but I cant change the resolution, refresh rate or rotation from the Monitor Preference dialog box. dino99's response (in the referenced post) about xorg.conf not being needed anymore seems relevant. How can I resolve this issue and get rid of this annoying warning? Is there a configuration that I can update with a supported resolution to placate lucid?

Ubuntu Multimedia :: K9copy "requested Bit Rate Too Low" Error On 2nd Pass

Nov 5, 2010

I am having a great time very quickly migrating from Windows through Ubuntu.

One area that I am still having trouble in is transcoding VOB into DivX, XviD, AVI, etc. I have been succesful one time using k9copy and it made a great looking avi. Since that time I get a failure on the 2nd pass. It seems as if the problem is related to the line in the error log "requested bit rate too low". So I changed from filesize to bitrate selection in the wizard and set it at max (99999). This got it to start the 2nd pass but still ended up crashing about 3/4 of the way through with an unexpected error message. Undaunted i tried again with the same setup and options. This time I once again got the bitrate too low error on the 2nd pass.

I have tried other GUI apps like avidemux (sound out of sync with that one), WinFF (not merging the vob's together), and others without satisfactory results. It would be great if I could get k9copy to work as it did the first try as it did exactly what I am looking for.

I have mencoder and all the depedencies installed (I believe). I am running a quad core amd64 bit processor and ubuntu 10.04.

It is just puzzling to me that k9copy worked flawlessly the first time and now nothing but trouble.

These are VOB's that have been put together by IFOedit from files dmuxed by DVDdecryter (under wine) stripped of copy guard. I take the ac3 soundtrack and convert it into WAV so that i can add a commentary (rifftrax) in audacity, then convert that back into ac3 and combine it all together again. I have been doing this for some time in Windows, and can now do everything in Ubuntu except for the avi transcode (really bothersome to reboot into windows just to run DivX Pro converter).

Networking :: Error: "bind: Cannot Assign Requested Address"

Jun 18, 2010

I have a small cluster (OSCAR, Fedora 8) and I was able to run some application software on it. Then lightning struck very close to the building. Fortunately I had unplugged all the power cables (because the cluster has not yet been moved to where the power lines are protected), but it seems that the institution didn't have any protection on their LAN cables, and so the whole building's public network cards are damaged. A costly lesson.

Anyway, when I tried to run the application software in parallel across the cluster (using the private network which is unscathed) I get the error message given in the subject line. I contacted the application software's help department as I thought I had perhaps forgotten to set something, but according to them it is a normal network problem.

Quote:

Check the /etc/hosts file and make sure that the nodes all have a single definition and you don't have lines like

127.0.0.1 localhost normnode3

and that normnode3 has the same address both on the master and on the node. try ping normnode3 from the master and see what address comes back 64 bytes from 164.190.57.105: icmp_seq=1 ttl=64 time=0.306 ms or is it 127.0.0.1. Then do the reverse. Also double check that you can ssh between nodes without password but I would expect a different error then. The command "hostname" returns gnlserv01, which is the public NIC.

After the lightning I had trouble getting the nodes to communicate "automatically" with each other, but it can be cured by starting the xinetd service and disabling the firewall on the master node (it's not too dangerous since I don't have a public interface at present and since I'm sitting behind the institution's firewall as well.) Just by the way, I would think that ther should be a file somewhere in which I could specify those two commands to take place when the master node is switched on. Could you perhaps enlighten me as to where and how I could specify it?

I was wondering whether I would need to explicitly start a bind-type service or something like that? (Since I had to explicitly start xinetd) I'm rather clueless really. I googled around and found that there is a named service, so I tried to start it, but I don't think it's installed on the computer. Therefore, since I have managed to run the application software in parallel previously, the named service is probably not the problem. Here is a copy of how my /etc/hosts file looks like:

Code:

# Do not remove the following line, or various programs
# that require network functionality will fail.
# These entries are managed by SIS, please don't modify them.
127.0.0.1 localhost.localdomain localhost
