I was burning a DVD+R DL when a read error happened and the burner program stopped execution. Now, when I ask for the disk status it says: 'disk status: open, not finalized' (Nero 7 under ms win xp). Besides this, I have at my disposal Cdrecord-ProDVD-Clone 2.01 and K3b 1.0.2 under KDE 3.5.7.
I am using Fedora 13 64bit. My eclipse program starts a server on port 9050 but I shutdown the program, eclipse fails to properly shutdown the server. Restarting eclipse has no effect.
How can I close or unbind a port forcibly from command line?
I know rebooting or log off and back on will clear the ports but this much slower process for me. I am looking for forcibly closing the port in command line.
I would like to use two monitors with my desktop, so connected them the other day and it worked straight away, which is good but... The monitor configuration app always want the primary monitor to be on the left hand side, thus it always extend my desktop right. Can I do anything to extend my desktop to the left instead of to the right so I can have background application on the screen to the left?
View 8 Replies View RelatedI set my drives up with MY boot loader, and I boot several OSes.I installed Ubuntu and told it to place grub on the / drive, which is where I always put it with any other install and it works fine.I find now that despite telling the install where to put it, you guys have taken it upon yourselves to alter the MBR of the volume ANYWAY!
SO, what I need to do is re-install grub, but I see that you also have no repair facility on this disc either. All I want to do is use MY boot loader. Currently, when I point at the / volume it just hangs with a non-blinking cursor in the upper left.No other Linux installs I have performed over the years do this. I want the drive to boot by merely pointing my bootloader at that volume.It always has in the past, so what did you guys change? I want NO action on my MBR, but I DO want a working grub on the actual root volume, which is NOT the first volume on the drive.
I am using Ubuntu 10.10 and when I place a blank cd into my drive it detects it but tells me there is no cd burning application, but I have k3b and gnome baker. What is going on?

View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen I open any application, instead of getting the application logo at the top left corner of the window, what I get is a button which on clicking drops down to provide me couple of options. I am using Ambiance Theme Can I move those options somewhere else on the top and get back the application logo at its place(which kind of looks smart and helps me differentiate between the applications in open windows faster) I haven't checked it in KDE but I am using Gnome(default with Ubuntu 10.04). And as far as I remember, when I was using KDE with Fedora 11(a month ago), I used to get the logo

"CDrecord has no permission to open the device".
I normally use gentoo, but have been persuaded to put Ubuntu 10.10 with Unity on my wife's laptop (HP Pavilion dv5). It's a rather steep learning curve. How do I add a new printer? CUPS asks for root's password, which is unknown/undefined. I tried sudo, but I'm not in the sudoers file. Catch 22? How do I add an application to the launcher on the left side of the screen? Drag & Drop does not appear to be available. How do I get back to the standard Gnome desktop?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI was trying to burn an .iso with K3b a little while ago, and had some problems. First of all, even though I chose 8x to burn my (16x) DVD, it switched to 11x or 12x around halfway through the burning process. There were also some ticking noises that I'm pretty sure were coming from the DVD writer, not terribly loud, but noticeable. This had never happened before. Finally, it got stuck at about 98% (but not frozen, as the time elapsed kept going), and did not finish burning--got an error message (and a bad disc): "cdrecord has no permission to open the device"
I inspected the disc and there was one dark spot (on the dye) about halfway through the disc, very thin and couple of millimeters long. (This was present only after burning). I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, K3b version 1.91.0, Lite-On DVDRW SHW-160P6S

I got Ubuntu 9.10 running very well. ever since this morning when i booted i have that weird Panel on the desktop towards the left. It is showing basically the Application menu. I dont know why? I know i did not change anything. Also since this morning my right klick on the desktop nothing happen either? i dont want that on the Desktop!

for instance: *.avi, *.mp3 to have the VLC icon
and other application to have the icon of their default application.
So far I only found tips to install single icons or to add icon packs. :S
and is there any way to when you install an application make it default for such file types ?
So, supposedly Gnome Shell is available through synaptic. I just downloaded and installed it and then ran gnome-shell --replace. It doesn't work at all. I hit the windows key and get nothing and there is no application launcher in the upper left hand corner and Alt-f2 produces nothing at all. Alt-tab gives me the option of choosing the windows that were running when I ran gnome-shell --replace but nothing else works at all. Just a vast expanse of digital nothingness. Does anyone know why this might be? I have an nvidia video card (see sig below) and two monitors running from "twin view".

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a webserver WWW1 and a front-facing proxy PRX. I use SSH ProxyCommand to connect to WWW1's internal IP (private IP) via PRX (private+public IP). For some connections (not all) I see a network connection left open after I'm finished. These add up!

On PRX, lsof | grep WWW1:ssh shows 124 open connections at the moment. On WWW1, the same command shows 243 open connections. There are similar open connections for WWW2, WWW3 etc.
WWW1 and PRX are Debian. Client connections are coming from a mix of Debian, Ubuntu and OSX10.6. I use Emacs Tramp but this has no special configuration (AFAIK) outside of my ~/.ssh/config. I'm concerned about running out of internal ports, and ideally I want these connections to clean themselves up without intervention. Ideally by configuring them to kill themselves off; failing that a command I can kill old processes with is fine!
I set up an exim4 server successfully and was able to send/receive mail! I fired off a couple emails to my friend and never got a response. Oh well, I thought, must be because my domain name might be considered spam.Flash forward to today and I get an email from the people who host my server, telling me that I have left my exim4 relay open. Looking through some of my users' email, I see a series of messages with the subject 'Message frozen':

I seriously have no idea what I've done to my Ubuntu 10.10 desktop, but now my desktop looks like. As you can see, on the top-left corner of the screen, all my menus in "Application", as well as "Places, Systems" are missing now. How can I get all these back? Urgently.

Do you know of any dvd copying program? like without making the image and then burning with just one process just copy the disc sorta program like roxio dvd copier? I wanted to make copies of movies I made a dvd of but aside from image burn which is a hassle to make the image first. is there something for burning on the fly or dvd/cd copying? infrarecorder and cdburnerxp do not work for me at all.

Imagine that you are at work using your computer. You lock the keyboard and you go home(you didn't turn it off). You go home and you login to work's computer. What I want to see is the same if I was just unlocking works's computer. IS that possible and how?
When I have an Audio CD inside my computer in the desktop there is an icon called "Sound disk". When I left click on it Nautilus opens. I would like Rhythmbox to open instead.
I've tried to change in /etc/gnome/defaults.list :
But the problem is still here.
NB: I only need to click once on the icons of the files to open them (I changed the preference of Nautilus).
NB2: I have no problem with "Open with" in the context menu when right clicking.
NB3: I have no problem when I insert an Audio CD: Rhythmbox opens automatically because I selected that option.

Description of Problem:There is another thread that discussed this same problem that I'm having: However that thread is so old that the suggestions in it no longer work in Ubuntu 10.04 and for whatever reason I can not make a reply to that thread.As in the above thread, I've tried other input devices and rebooting the computer and using other USB ports, and my mouse still intermittently double left clicks randomly at times when I've only clicked the left mouse button once and at times and places when it should only produce a single click such as when selecting a drop down menu.
Has any one else had this problem, and does any one have any idea how to fix it or to trouble shoot this a bit more? Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide to further clarify or troubleshoot this issue.

How would I turn a comma-seperated list of expressions into a C++ vector in the grammar?Second, how do you implement left-associative operators in a parser that does not allow left recursion?
And third, what would be the best internal representation of integers? A C++ int seems simplest, but limited. Using GMP seems more versatile, but I'm afraid it might seriously slow down the interpreter compared to C++ ints.
How do I open an app from a dialog box? Eg the download db in FF in which you have options to Open or Save. I want to be able to navigate to a folder containing app folders which I can then open to find an icon to double click so as to launch an app. Much like in Windows navigating to Program files (I think it is called). How do you do this in Linux?
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo for Windows, I can load up Xming in the background, SSH into a Linux machine, and open up a file with gedit. Gedit appears on my Windows desktop through Xming.
I'm using Ubuntu now, and when I ssh into the same Linux machine, I can't open up gedit and mess with some files.
Is there a Linux version of Xming I have to get? I'm sure there's an easier way, I just don't know it.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am using Compiz, and am trying to use Animations to make only Gloobus Preview (Window name= gloobus-preview) open with one of three animations. I have selected Horizontal Folds, Sidekick, and Zoom in Random Effects, made a new item for Open, set its duration to 200, set it to Random, and have tried everything possible to try and get only Gloobus Preview to have an animation, but nothing works. I can get everything except Gloobus Preview to have an animation, but if I do the opposite, then nothing works. If I set it to "any", then Gloobus Preview animates, but so does everything else. I would like for nothing to have an open animation except for Gloobus Preview. How can I do this in Compiz's Animations?
