General :: How To Purge Connections Left Open By SSH ProxyCommand

I have a webserver WWW1 and a front-facing proxy PRX. I use SSH ProxyCommand to connect to WWW1's internal IP (private IP) via PRX (private+public IP). For some connections (not all) I see a network connection left open after I'm finished. These add up!

On PRX, lsof | grep WWW1:ssh shows 124 open connections at the moment. On WWW1, the same command shows 243 open connections. There are similar open connections for WWW2, WWW3 etc.
WWW1 and PRX are Debian. Client connections are coming from a mix of Debian, Ubuntu and OSX10.6. I use Emacs Tramp but this has no special configuration (AFAIK) outside of my ~/.ssh/config. I'm concerned about running out of internal ports, and ideally I want these connections to clean themselves up without intervention. Ideally by configuring them to kill themselves off; failing that a command I can kill old processes with is fine!

I am using Fedora 13 64bit. My eclipse program starts a server on port 9050 but I shutdown the program, eclipse fails to properly shutdown the server. Restarting eclipse has no effect.
How can I close or unbind a port forcibly from command line?
I know rebooting or log off and back on will clear the ports but this much slower process for me. I am looking for forcibly closing the port in command line.

I set up an exim4 server successfully and was able to send/receive mail! I fired off a couple emails to my friend and never got a response. Oh well, I thought, must be because my domain name might be considered spam.Flash forward to today and I get an email from the people who host my server, telling me that I have left my exim4 relay open. Looking through some of my users' email, I see a series of messages with the subject 'Message frozen':

Looking at the results of both `lsof | grep IPv4` and `netstat -tp` I noticed that I have a lot of connections open from a program called 'gvfsd-http'.
Using google, I found that this was a Filesystem something from Gnome, that would also be used If I drag something from my browser to my desktop.
Though I wonder, how I activated it, because I didn't do that...
After a bit of searching, I noticed that `screenshots.debian.net` uses the same IP address as the one noted (hades.car.gr).
PING screenshots.debian.net (78.46.20.5) 56(84) bytes of data.
64 bytes from hades.car.gr (78.46.20.5): icmp_req=1 ttl=56 time=55.4 ms
Question: Do I have some tool enabled that maybe sends statistics to debian or so? Where to find it and kill it.

I am using nx client and I would like to ask your help. Is it possible when I connect from home to my work's computer (using nx client) to see the exactly same desktop-taskbar and open programs as I left them in my work computer.
Imagine that you are at work using your computer. You lock the keyboard and you go home(you didn't turn it off). You go home and you login to work's computer. What I want to see is the same if I was just unlocking works's computer. IS that possible and how?

When I have an Audio CD inside my computer in the desktop there is an icon called "Sound disk". When I left click on it Nautilus opens. I would like Rhythmbox to open instead.
I've tried to change in /etc/gnome/defaults.list :
But the problem is still here.
NB: I only need to click once on the icons of the files to open them (I changed the preference of Nautilus).
NB2: I have no problem with "Open with" in the context menu when right clicking.
NB3: I have no problem when I insert an Audio CD: Rhythmbox opens automatically because I selected that option.

I've noticed that when I open firefox I get really strange HTTP and HTTPS connections showing up in firestarter (which as I understand it is just a GUI for IPtables). They connect to various bits of a site listed as 1e100.net (when you use "lookup hostnames") such as wy-in-f18.1e100.net, they stay connected all the time as far as I can see unless I close firefox. I've heard people say they are connected to Google, but I can close all tabs after loging out of google and still see them... it's very odd.

I would like to use two monitors with my desktop, so connected them the other day and it worked straight away, which is good but... The monitor configuration app always want the primary monitor to be on the left hand side, thus it always extend my desktop right. Can I do anything to extend my desktop to the left instead of to the right so I can have background application on the screen to the left?

I'm not sure if I should post this question in "hardware & laptops", or "Desktop Environments", because this is a hardware problem on a desktop computer.
Description of Problem:There is another thread that discussed this same problem that I'm having: However that thread is so old that the suggestions in it no longer work in Ubuntu 10.04 and for whatever reason I can not make a reply to that thread.As in the above thread, I've tried other input devices and rebooting the computer and using other USB ports, and my mouse still intermittently double left clicks randomly at times when I've only clicked the left mouse button once and at times and places when it should only produce a single click such as when selecting a drop down menu.
Has any one else had this problem, and does any one have any idea how to fix it or to trouble shoot this a bit more? Please let me know if there is any other information I can provide to further clarify or troubleshoot this issue.

The first is about implementing function calls. The way I currently have it is that functions are called with a C++ std::vector of nodes as the parameters. How would I turn a comma-seperated list of expressions into a C++ vector in the grammar?Second, how do you implement left-associative operators in a parser that does not allow left recursion?
And third, what would be the best internal representation of integers? A C++ int seems simplest, but limited. Using GMP seems more versatile, but I'm afraid it might seriously slow down the interpreter compared to C++ ints.

Is it fair to say that connLimit and hashlimit are very similiar on Linux i.e. while hashlimit caters to limits for groups of ports, they both set the connection rate limit per host? How in IPTables, do I configure a policy that limits connections on a port that encapsulates the total sum of all connections from all hosts? i.e. I do not want to allow more than 6000conn/minute for port range that is the sum of all connecting hosts?

I recently installed Fedora 15 now, and during installation I set the internet connection manually, then did update and after reboot, the internet connection settings have been removed. Now I can not set because the network connection to the Internet Connection is inactive. I mention that before the update was functional internet connection.

I went to remove FreeNX from my Ubuntu Lucid machine so I opened the terminal and typed: "sudo aptitude purge freenx" The command worked but when I used the command "locate nx" I got a list of FreeNX associated files (as well as nxserver files). Is it possible to completely remove a program from my system? I thought "sudo aptitude purge" would do it but apparently not. My only concern is that in the future if I decide to install something related to this program it will interfere and cause problems.

When upgrading to Maverick I accidentally (yes, I know, my bad) installed Grub to my Ubuntu partition instead of to the MBR. It was already installed to the MBR prior to this. So, when I rebooted all I got was the Grub rescue console. I loaded the Linux image with a different boot loader on floppy instead, and proceeded to uninstall and reinstall Grub2 to MBR with

sudo grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/ /dev/sda
sudo update-grub
However, on restart I now get the regular Grub console, but not the selection screen to select what to boot. This even though all Linux kernel images and the Windows 7 partition I have was found during the reinstall. So, seems I need to do a complete purge of Grub from both MBR and sda3 (which is the Ubuntu partition i accidentally chose on upgrade), and start over clean. Question is then, how do I do it, line by line from the terminal?

Are there some effective tools to purge the system of unused libs/pkg and other files?Till now I found localepurge (i do not remember where i found it) which does some trick, but I am sure there is a lot of other things laying around in Slack with no real reason to be there in some minimal installation.I found also unsuedpkg in google.code, but it does nothing on a fresh system.Such question won't rise if Slack team wouldn't be forgetting about Slack's significance in server segment and putting big efforts in "deskopisation" of it. I'd be happy seeing directories like xlibs/ and mm_stuff/ where all x related libs and multimedia related ehhh... files could go (I hope developers will see this message).

Did a fresh install of 10.04 Desktop 86_64 this weekend. One of the first issues I noticed right away was that apt was not function properly. Say for example you install the packages tor and vidalia (assume I'm running everything from root). #apt-get install tor vidalia This command will check and install necessary dependencies, for example 'privoxy'. Now if you decide that you don't want to use privoxy and instead use polipo, you would probably feel inclined to remove privoxy. Well I found that apt-get autoremove, apt-get remove, apt-get purge WILL NOT remove all the files/directories associated with the package. You'll find that after running each of these commands, there will still be directories, scripts, etc. in /etc/init, /etc, and /etc/rc*.d. The only solution I've found to completely removing a package is aptitude purge [package].
