have you used fsarchiver? i heard bad things about partimage that it doesn't recognize the files it creates and you have to rename them all to .gz or i don't know what ... fsarchiver seems promising and i made a few backups of ntfs partition using it ... so , have you used it ? and if so , what do you think about it?

I've had a problem for a while-- when I save files on a USB stick in Ubuntu, then put it in a windows computer, it doesn't recognize the files. It only recognizes a video file that I have, but not the .doc files. The folders either don't appear or only appear as shortcuts.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have Ubuntu 10.04 in my laptop and at the same time I have Windows 7 (partitioned disk). I use mostly Ubuntu, but I need windows for some stuff. I want to share files of windows with Ubuntu (is weird but when I installed Ubuntu never gave me the option "share files from windows", I dunno why). Anyway, I can see the disk in Ubuntu, and I can see the folder /Documents and settings/, that creates windows by default with my files. However, the route is too long to arrive there from Ubuntu using the Terminal.
I created a shadow link using lndir to arrive to my files easier. It works fine, however, sometimes when I go to the files using this route, these are lightened in red, and when I try to enter to one of these folders, the system doesn't recognize it. After a while, these are in blue and I can go in them. Why it is happening?. What I did Is the "correct" way to do it?.
I have been using Eclipse to program in Java for a long time, and have been using Jigloo for most of my GUI design. Recently I decided to try out the C/C++ plugin. I tried installing it, but it did not work. After many attempts, I finally gave up. However, after uninstalling it I found that Jigloo had stopped working. Any other plugins I try to install now also don't work. I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling plugins, and reinstalling eclipse, but nothing I have done fixes it. Although eclipse says that the software has been installed, nothing shows up in the features list or the plugins list.
Another problem: When I install eclipse from the repositories, it doesn't install a bunch of libraries and eclipse cannot recognize standard java files.
I need to unmount my primary partition /dev/sda1/ to perform a FSArchiver restore, however when I try to umount the partition it tells me I can't unmount a partition that is in use, how do I fix this?

Im trying to build an initrd image for my livecd using cpio -o -H newc, but the livecd can't boot. If I create the initrd image using mkfs.ext2 then it works.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an acer aspireone aod250, i putted an external cdrom and downloaded the ubuntu, tried to install it but it didn't recognize the hdd... i though it was the cd, i downloaded ubuntu netbook edition, it did the same. i thought maybe i could try another operative, i downloaded linux mint 9, did the same thing. then ordered a cd from ubuntu.com, got in today, and it doesn't recognize my hdd. btw, the hdd is a seagate momentus 5400.6 with 160gb. i already ran ubuntu with the cd rom and starts the instalation, but when it arrives to the partitioning part of the instalation, it doesn't detect my hdd. but the bios in the pc detects it.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI created a new virtual host in Apache using Webmin and am having trouble getting it to work. When I created it, I opted to create the config file as a "New file under virtual servers directory /etc/apache2/sites-available". So now I have a default config file /etc/apache2/sites-available/default and a new one created by Webmin at /etc/apache2/sites-available/webmin.1412323.conf. It seems like the settings in that new Webmin config file aren't being picked up by Apache -- when I try and browse to mywebsite.com it shows my root /var/www folder, not the subdirectory /var/www/mywebsite.
Is there a way I can tell Apache to include the new Webmin config file for the virtual host or should I just copy the directives into the default file at /etc/apache2/sites-available/default? It seems like Webmin should automatically configure Apache to work with any newly generated config files.
I'm new to ubuntu. My kingston 4Gb pen drive doesn't recognize from ubuntu 10.04.

I had no trouble a while ago getting it to work on an old Fedora Core 3 system, and I don't think the problem is even with the apcupsd package because at the very least, I expect to see the device appear when I plug in the usb cable and use (from the APCUPSD User Manual):

I have been using fedora 12 for quite some time. When i first installed Fedora on my new system i created 2 ntfs partitions on the hard disk using mkfs.ntfs and in the space at the end of the disk i have Fedora. recently i tried installing Win7 but it didnt recognise the partitions even tho they are NTFS. I had to format 1st partition from setup to install Win7. After boot i find that Win7 doesn't recognise the 2nd partition as welL. The partitions are working fine in Fedora.

Everything else works fine, but the situation with Fedora automatically recognised new devices when plugged in has changed to the exact opposite. Under Fedora 9, all devices I plugged in were always automatically recognised, whether I liked it or not. Under Fedora 12, nothing is ever automatically recognised any more. Whenever I plug something in, the system just ignores it. If they devices turn up as block device descriptors in /dev, I can manually mount them and access them through the mount points. Otherwise, I can't do squat. Now I can only access my digital camera by manually mounting it and copying the files. This works, but is cumbersome. Under Fedora 9, I used to be able to use GPhoto to download the pictures via PTP. Not any more. GPhoto acts as if the camera wasn't even there. So does F-Spot. What has happened? Have I missed installing some kernel module or service or something?

View 10 Replies View RelatedI've just installed openSUSE 11.2 (with Gnome). Everything works fine except the Ipod support in Banshee (Ver. 1.6 Beta 2).
When I connect my Ipod Video 30GB to my Computer it is recognised in openSUSE and also a new Nautilus windows with the Ipod content is opened. But in Banshee there is no Ipod button or anything else which allows me to sync my music with Ipod.
I've already tried to delete the /home/{user}/.config/banshee-1 folder and installed the banshee-1-dmp-ipod package. The Ipod plugin (Ver. 1.0) is also installed in Banshee.
Perhaps this is sheer ignorance, but i just cant figure out which wireless chipset i´ve got. Its irrelevant to say that my wireless conection doesn´t authenticate (repeating the process without end). So this is the output of lspci:

Anyway, I have created the empty .is_audio_player file but still the player does not show up in RB. I can access the player just fine through Nautilus, and syncing it actually worked for a while, but now for some reason it has stopped.

However, just recently, at random times for about 5 seconds I can't use my mouse or keyboard.When it does that, the computer isn't frozen, I just can't type.About 5 seconds later, all the text that I was trying to type suddenly appears. When I tried to open it from the email using the default gedit I got an error message - Could not open the file /tmp/Feb.txt gedit has not been able to detect the character encoding. check that you are not trying to open a binary file. Select a character encoding from the menu and try again.The character encoding is set to 'automatically detected'.
How come it can't detect the encoding? I had to manually set the encoding to Western(ISO 8599-15) to load it. I can't remember this happening in the past, and it was OK loading one I sent earlier (Jan.txt) which presumably had the same encoding, as it was written in the same way.
I recently upgraded from karmic to lucid. I am currently having a problem trying to get ubuntu to recognize my LG slim External DVD drive. It was recognized fine in Karmic, but for some reason doesnt work now in Lucid. The device does work as i have tried it on other computers.

1. Downloaded the Mac4lin package.
2. Extracted folder in my downloads.
3. Went to System > Preferences > Appearance.
4. Clicked install.
5. Installed Downloads > Mac4Lin_Install_v1.0 > Mac4Lin_Install_v1.0 >b GTK > Mac4Lin_Meta_v1.0.tar.gz.
However, when I do this, it doesn't recognize it, as you can see in the picture. Did I do something wrong when installing it?
I installed windows 7 after I installed linux. I got grub reinstalled but windows doesnt show up in the grup menu. So I run in linux sudo update-grub, but this doesnt find my windows system.

how to get linux onto an old laptop (dell inspiron 2600, 1GHZ, 120MB RAM). the cd drive doesn't recognize CD's anymore and in boot menu, "Setup Utility" the usb drives aren't recognized. the usb drive or pen drive boots in another desktop just fine. i need to somehow install xubuntu or crunchbang or something lite but must do it using net install. i see lots of tutorials but they are either too complicated or unknown source, like "inslux." and not too complicated of a process. I'm a "techie-tard," i guess. also, i'd like to suggest a new "sub-forum" in "distribution" forum, Called "General Distro."

I am at the point of installing thunderbird so that I can send/receive email. It seems to install fine, but when setting up the account it says that my username/password is not recognized. I know that I am typing them in right, and if I go directly to gmail with firefox rather than through thunderbird they work OK. Any thoughts? (I am also posting to the thunderbird forum at mozilla.)
