Ubuntu :: Get A Message To Flash Up On Screen Based On A List Of Messages In A Text File?

i've been using some subliminal software on windows for a while now and have found it to be really good. It basically just flashes up a message on screen over the top of whatever is going on at that time but the message is only there for about 30 milli seconds
The message is not there long enough for your conscious mind to read it but the theory is that your subconscious mind will read it.It actually works really well. THe problem is that they dont package a linux version although they do have an OSX version, i'd really like this on ubuntu.
Tried it in wine and it installs but nothing happens after that. Alternatively perhaps somebody can tell me how you could get a message to flash up on screen based on a list of messages in a text file?
I have a question regarding to the Graphical Splash Screen. Is their a way to show the text based startup on booting your OS? So. I don't the OpenSuse Background with the loading line. But i want the half transparent black background if possible or just the black background with all the loading texts. The black and white screen.
I'm looking for software which will allow me to record a screen-cast of a terminal based application, recording keystrokes, timing of keystrokes, and audio. I see a couple of advantages to this approach over video capture: Display independence: the viewer can display text in any resolution/style they want, not limited to the resolution of the recorded video. KMail 1.11.4, KDE 4.2.4: I'm migrating from WinXP to Mandriva, and installed KMail at the weekend. Works fine, but I have a niggle - the message list displays headers grouped by month order. I'd like the option of having a simple list (no groups), and suspect that it could be done - but I haven't been able to find out how. I am having some weird problem with the firefox based flash player when playing videos in full screen. The video flashes white in areas while the video is playing. I don't know if this is Ubuntu, Firefox or flash. I am running Lucid on a Macbook Pro
I am using Ubuntu and looking for a good editor to edit a file that is > 4GB. I just need to put content at the end and beginning of the file. I suppose I could use something like
cat "text to add" >> huge_file
To append to the file. Is that the route to go? What about prepending? In general, what is the best route if I wanted to edit somewhere in the middle?
I've tried VIM and it fails miserably. I assume emacs and nano would be even worse. What else is there? I assume to accomplish what I am looking for, the editor would have to be specifically designed for this by not keeping the entirety of the file's contents in memory.
I have the normal OS choices menu (Windows XP or Unbuntu) but when I choose ubuntu I get an instant flash of an error message on a black screen so quick I cannot read the whole thing but I caught "error" and "format" and then the computer reboots. I have no problem getting into Windows.
How to list the contents of a folder to a text file. I'm trying to list all my music, including all subfolders, etc. to a text file, but I can't remember the command.
I have a file with 5000 lines. it is a list of books authors, series and titles. all lines start with the author names, than there is a dash (-) than the series name, a dash again and the title of the book.
The problem I encounter is that sometime there is a series, sometime not, and as I try to enter this list in a database, I wanted to create a cvs file to import into mysql.
ex:
The best would be to be able to add in the second line, a "space dash space" just after the author name, but how to make sure it does not do it to the first line as well.
If I could separate all line with 2 dash, (grep ?) then I would be able to do a simple replace, and change the single dash into two.
I have a text file with a long list of RPM's. I need to check if each RPM is installed. I'm sure I can cat out this file and run "rpm -qa" against it, but I'm having trouble with the syntax right now...
I am trying to install either Ubuntu or CentOS server in text mode only. The problem I am having is that the hardware that I am trying to install it on has no vga output, I can only connect to it via console cable. I am able to boot from USB CDROm or flash drive but unfortunately since the hardware does not have a gpu (atleast none that I'm aware of) I am unable to get past the boot screen. If someone can point me in the right direction or know where I would be able to download the text install of either OS, that would be awesome.

Interestingly enough, I've had a couple of opportunities to do similar tasks with passwords and privileges and even across the LAN in the last few days. Solving this problem will help me solve the others for next time.
I need to get names of all installed packages in 2 machines and save them in 2 text files, then I want to compare these 2 files to know the differences between 2 files and from that I could know the differences between 2 machines. Is it possible to do that and what program I could use?

==> so the joined file must be sorted on the first number. Any ideas how this can be achieved ?
I need to be able to send snmp traps based on certain severity or content of syslog messages. Can this be done from standard linux? Alternatively, are there MIB's out there that support syslog events so I can get the status from snmp?
We have MS Exchange email server with postfix/amavis on FreeBSD as proxy for anti-spam and anti-virus. We use our own developed CRM and trying to implement such functionality that when CRM manager send email to CRM client or vice versa through email client like Outlook (no plugins for CRM) this message would be shown in CRM. There is already a solution to parse emails from specific emailbox and show it in CRM.
What I need is to create postfix email filter to check if sender email is in file CRM_managers_emails and recipient email is in file CRM_clients_emails then forward that email to [URL] Filter should check both incoming and outgoing messages. I will auto generate CRM_managers_emails and CRM_clients_email files containing all such emails taken from CRM database. I know i should use something like Postfix After-Queue Content Filter but most of examples are for blocking emails.
im trying to output a list of running processes via a shell script. At the moment i got this which outputs the processes to a text file called out.
echo $(ps aux) >>out
The problem is though, the processes are all just one big block of text which makes it hard to read. Does anyone know how to sort the output to a text file so that it prints to the text file at 1 process per line? I know its probably simple but im very new to linux.
Finally I got success in setting up of CDMA USB modem but I could not access the internet or browse the internet. I can only download message and send messages using through evolution. But can browse internet.

I'm trying to find out what the non-graphical installer is called so I can use it in my install DVD After a fair amount of searching,I have come up empty-handed. I know the graphical installer is called ubiquity and that works great if you have a live desktop environment.
