Sep 17, 2010I have installed VirtualBox and setup a Windows Vista host, initially with a .vdi of 10gb. That filled up quickly, so I added another 20gb secondary partition, after first trying to allocate a .vdi to a SCSI controller. Configured the drive in Windows (Computer Management), and all seemed ok. I shutdown VB, and rebooted my Linux host (openSuse 11.3). Now I keep bouncing back to the login screen, and can't login to Linux KDE, but can login to a console.I do have the following info:

I did see a message before, that I don't see anymore, that said it could not start NFS services due to missing entry in fstab. Another I'm seeing now is it couldn't start the avahi-daemon, no space left on device. This is odd, since I have a 200GB drive, with half of it left, only max 30GB set to VB. Here's my df -k output:
/dev/sda6 Use% is 100%
devtmpfs Use% is 1%
tmpfs Use% is 1%
/dev/sda7 Use% is 46%
So root "/" is mounted on /dev/sda6, which looks like it could be a problem, but why would this suddenly be a problem after working with VirtualBox? Could this be a matter of just freeing up space on /dev/sda6? Like the /tmp folder that's under "/"?

Jan 2, 2011I've installed Ubuntu desktop edition 10.04 so far, using alcohol tool as I wanted to install "inside Windows".I successfully installed it everything seems to be fine to me. But, the problem is when I select Ubuntu from boot menu it stops at a console with some grub loader message and doesn't shows login screen.
Please, not that I had installed it a couple of time before and it worked perfectly for some reason and Windows problem I had to uninstall it.
I can also post pictures of that screen if you require, I've to capture it through my mobile phone, which is with suck graphics.

i had also added vbox users(i ticked vboxusers) under yast-security and users-user and group management-edit-details to make virtual box work.
i want to check that installed theme so i restarted my laptop.after the restart opensuse taking too long time to boot

Feb 3, 2010The graphical login screen is loaded just fine. Though very shortly after (a moment after the loading screen could be seen) it crashes back to the graphical login. And that happens no matter what wm I'm trying - gnome, kde3, kde4, e16, e17, even twm.
It happened after the logout after a zypper up yesterday morning. Looking through the list of what packages were upgraded (two machines, both last zypper up'ed last Sunday, checked on the second one after the problem with the first one), the only packages which might be responsible are kwin or qt4.
The graphics card seems to be fine (NVidia 9600), as it happens whether or not I use nv or the propietary driver. Also tried reinstalling it from the repo as well as using the binary blob from NVidia. Has been tested on Windows and games are running fine there, so it shouldn't be the card.
What is strange, is that when calling upon sax2 -r from runlevel three, the initial screen loads nicely, but sax2 crashes back to the cli once one presses 'Change Configuration'. No error messages are being printed.
Any pointers on how I can narrow down the cause (and get it fixed)?

OpenSUSE Install :: Don't See The Login Screen / Get A Screen With Squares And Rectangles
Mar 27, 2011I installed opensuse11.4 few minutes back. The install was absolutely smooth. I have dual boot, Win Xp and 11.4 now. But for some reason I do not see the login screen but instead I see a green screen with squares and stripes. Login in the failsafe mode is successful. How do I fix it?
Also noticed the following,
1) Initially the splash screen picks up the right resolution 1024*768 and then it changes it to a higher resolution. This I think I can fix, because I had faced a similar problem with 11.3 as well.
Graphics Card: GeForce 7025/ nForce 630a.

Apr 12, 2011My last setup (years ago) ran fluxbox so because it was familiar I installed it as a secondary to xfce right off the bat. I download a lot of different stuff because I like to try out all the apps I can find but somewhere I broke something. I can still run fluxbox fine, but nither the Xubuntu nor Xfce sessions will run now. Last thing I remember changing was pulse audio(removed it for an experiment I was trying with jack audio), not sure if it is connected but when I try to login to xfce the screen goes black, flickers a few times then it brings me back to the login screen.
I tried failsafe but everytime I do my monitor gives me a "frequency out of range" error. I tried purging and reinstalling xubuntu desktop and xfce settings but I am thinking its my xorg config. My laptop is a Toshiba satellite M305D-s4830 with ATI Radeon 3100 mobile graphics card and I am running Xubuntu 10.10. Unfortunately I also broke the screen, so right now I am stuck with an external monitor till I get a new one.

Aug 9, 2011yesterday I met a colleague on the floor, who told me that after looking at the jailhouse theme of Suse 11.4 (I guess that'sa kind of curtain? it really is remarkably ugly) he switched to Ubuntu. So well, I won't go that far, but now I thought, let'sswitch the login-screen for something better.Okay, I go to System Settings / System Administration / Login Screen, tab Theme.Alright, there are six themes there, but I don't like them. Great, there is "Get New Theme"!Okay, I get one. But the list of themes doesn't change --- I would have expected, that the newtheme would now be automatically included. So well, a bit stupid, but apparently it wants youto explicitly include it: so I click "Install new theme" --- unfortunately, then there is no hintwhere the themes have been stored! Okay, I download another one, hoping that during thatprocess I will be told what happens. Alas, there was a chance for such enlightenment with KDE3.

(I found the desktop themes, and I found the six themes which were already there,but not the new themes).So could somebody tell my where KDE hides the newly downloaded themes?
By the way, the information under "Help" seems either irrelevant or outdated (the directories mentionedseem false anyway).In general, I think most(!) Feb 6, 2010I've been running openSUSE 11.2 within a VM using VirtualBox 3.1.2 with Vista x64 as the host OS for quite some time now with good results. Yesterday I went to reboot the VM and VBox made some comment about 3D not working and needing to install the VBox guest additions (which were already installed). After rebooting and seeing the openSUSE splash screen, I now get a solid purplish display with no activity. I've tried running "sax2 -r", re-installing guest additions, running the repair CD, and other things but this problem has not gone away. Aside from reloading the OS, does anyone have ideas on how I might fix this?

Apr 23, 2011i installed opensuse 11.4 on my laptop (Lenovo T60, Mobility Radeon X1400). It worked fine for some weeks, the first problem that I found was that libreoffice did not work. Calc crashed immediately (screen looked "destroyed", only the panel was really visible, but the system seemed to work so I could log out without alt+ctr+del), writer had the problem after opening some menu options. Now (one week later) after start and login I could not see the panels anymore, I could start programs but those would not be displayed, I only saw the desktop. After restarting, I cannot even log in anymore, the screen looks destroyed as with libreoffice. I created a new user, this works and this is from where I write.
