Software :: Device Eth0 Has Mac Address / Instead Of Configured

I am trying to perform VM cloning using KVM in a centos 5.6 machines. I copy the memory contents of a running vm to an external state file and try to use that to start another VM in a different machine. While starting the cloned VM I provide a different mac address but once it resumes it has the old one . I tried changing the mac address in ifcfg-eth0 but I get the error: Device eth0 has a mac address xx:xx instead of configured xx:xx.Ignoring .
Is there some way to change the ip/mac of the cloned vm without the need to restart the VM ( Then the purpose of cloning will be defeated). Thanks a lot for the info.

I added an init script numbered just before bind9 starts, which needs to see the ipv6 link-local address on eth0. Sometimes this address is not configured, yet. In all cases it eventually is configured.
I am unable to find any script that is configuring the ipv6 link-local address (which is in part based on the MAC address). Does anyone know if there is some script or program that is supposed to be doing this, or is it an internal kernel function?
One workaround I am considering is making this init script go into a loop around sleep 1 to keep checking for the ipv6 address. But I'm concerned this might cause some problems. Any suggestions? I don't want to let it move on to start bind9 until the configuration this script does (more ipv6 addresses) is done.
This is on Ubuntu 9.10 server (for which there is not a prefix choice).

Version 10.04 LTS. Installed desktop version and network worked but I needed a static IP address and the install configures for a DHCP configured address. I tried changing to static address using the System->Preferences->Network Connections application but was unable to get the system to come up with the network up.
So I manually modified the /etc/network/interfaces and the /etc/resolv.conf files. I restart the system but when I do an ifconfig, I don't see a configured IP address on eth0 (only the loopback address). If I run /sbin/ifup eth0 everything then works fine and ifconfig shows the correct address bound to eth0.

I have an old Suse 8 installation on a vmware-host, where I had to change ip-addresses. Now something isn't working as it shouldn't:
- Proftpd isn't recognizing the old pw's (coming from a my-sql db)
I am not a real expert on linux, where is the address "192.168.1.37" configured on my machine? The Mysql daemon is running on this IP.

I have configured loopback IP address on my server as (10.10.10.10). My LAN card physical IP address is 10.10.10.20. I dont want my loopback IP address to broadcast the IP & arp. How can i achieve it? Right now i see the problem that both 10.10.10.10 & 10.10.10.20 ip address is broadcasted by same MAC & I have 10.10.10.10 is already with some other host too.

I just installed Debian 5.0.4 successfully. I want to use the PC as a File Server with two Drives configured as a RAID 1 device. Everything with the RAID device works fine, the only question I have belogs to the GRUB 0.97 Booloader. I downloaded Fedora 10 32bit and put it on a Dell Dimension 8200 to save it from the recycle bin. Everything seems to work except I cannot get an IP addr. Roadrunner is my ISP using a cable modem and a Linksys Instant Broadband Series Etherfast Cable/DSL router model BEFSR41. In system-config-network, the nic shows inactive. If I activate it a window opens saying "determining IP information for eth0". After a short time the message adds the word "failed". Using a Windows PC on the same network, I can look at the DHCP connections on the Linksys and I see the MAC addr for the PC running Fedora.
From the OS installation, /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/ifcfg-eth0 has following:

Since my upgrade to 10.04 I can't use my eth0 wired connection.The wireless works fine.I have tried auto eth0 in network connections set to manual and dhcp. eth0 shows up in ifconfig but no address is assigned.

I want to set my desktop IP address to always be 192.168.1.2. The NetworkManager connects to the network automatically and the IP address is assigned randomly. I can set up another connection in NetworkManager and always change over. But is there any way to make the default eth0 interface to be permanently set to a certain address (using NetworkManager, not ifup)?

I am trying to get networking up on an old PII which I have successfully installed with FC4. There is a link and activity on the onboard interface because I see the indicator lights. The controller is a 3Com PCI 3c905 Boomerang 100baseTx @ 0xdc80.The only message returned by dmesg about eth0 is "Dropping NETIF_F_SG since no checksum feature."The driver module, 3c59x, is loaded as well as the mii module that depends on it.There is something about "unknown parameter`irq'" in the dmesg text regarding the driver.I noticed that eth0 is sharing an IRQ with the UHCI Host Controller.That should not be a problem, but it should not be necessary. And I could do away with USB if this is a conflict and that is the easiest way to solve it.When I drop to console at runlevel 3, and call dhclient, which is installed, I get a message telling me there is no reply to the dhcp request.I don't think the problem is on the router/switch side.

New to CentOS5.5 I'm experiencing some trouble in order to continue my configuration. I've just installed my vmware tools and configured my network card with system-config-network
Edit eth0 (eth0) - vmxnet3 -> with a static IP I rebooted my server and since then I lost my eth0. I still see it in system-config-network, but I can't active it anymore.:

Everything worked fine until very recently, and without apparently ANY change to the settings on the server, a secondary IP that was assigned to my server won't work anymore..Any IP attached to the same server works fine.. So in my case, the problematic IP is 213.8.155.67. The other IP (213.8.155.42) works without any problem.How would I go about troubleshooting this?

i am having dell inspiron 1540 laptop installed with ubuntu 10.04 (updated). i wanted to install LAMP(Linux,Apache,MySQL,PHP) for software development purpose.
but after restarting the system, following things occured:-Message box appears saying "Ubuntu is running in low-graphics mode" Your screen, graphics card and input device setting could not be detected... OK
Then i get prompt saying what would you like to do ?Run ubuntu in low-graphics mode for just one session.
i get a message starting display in one minute.....nothing happens ... i switch to text mode by pressing
escape. There is a brown color star before: Speech dispacher configured for user sessions.on battery state there is a infinte loop i.e. no response and system just hangs there...startx at text mode makes the screen blank...
Please tell which part of '/var/log/Xorg.0.log' sholud be scanned to find required information.
i am a new to ubuntu How to solve this problem i donot have internet connection and its important that i get it repaired as soon as possible....essential to get it running else i will be forced to goto Windows...

i have 5.4 installed on a super-micro server motherboard (has two gigabit ether ports). when i boot while its initializing everything it gets to the "starting eth0" and just stays there?
right before it boots up and says press any key for options i press a key and choose "centos (2.6.18-164.el5)" and it boots up fine but when i choose "centos (2,6,18-164.el5xen)" the problem occurs. and that is the default boot option.

I have trouble getting a gateway to the internet when setting eth0 with a fixed IP address. The gateway address (192.168.2.1 my modem/router) resets to 0.0.0.0 whenever I apply the changes. DHCP works fine but I need a fixed address for my server.

I just finished installing Fedora 12 on a rack mount server. I was modifying the /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0 file to use a static IP address, but now nothing works. The device does not boot on start up or anything.Currently, ifcfg-eth0 looks like:
