Software :: Book Reader Program With Light Colored Smooth Background
Oct 22, 2010
I'm a big book lover so I read a lot. On windows I used Alreader for it's incredible handyness & it had a smooth lite brown background color. So it was easier for my eyes to read books in rtf, txt & so on formats instead of the default white background which is very annoying. Can you please suggest me a software like that for linux?

I have an annoying text color problem. I don't know what to change to fix it. I have played around with System->Preferences->Appearance to no avail. Here is the problem: I am getting very light colored text so only the currently selected item is readable. The funny thing is that in Nautilus, Firefox, Chrome, Amarok, etc.. it's fine. It seems to be in only some programs in boxes with selectable line items, but also in the area that displays status updates in FileZilla. So I'm not sure how to pinpoint the problem.

Using openSUSE 11.3 (64-bit), KDE environment. I am very, very new and inexperienced with Linux... I would like to download and read some e-books using my desktop PC. I poked around the Internet with Google and found several recommendations for an e-book reader called Calibre. So I found it in the openSUSE repository and installed v. 0.6.53-3.3.1 using YaST2. But the darned thing does not seem to work -- I click on the icon and nothing happens!!

I find the window shadows a little phony against a light background. Not a big deal, but just curious if there is a way to change this. Tried through Compiz, but that didn't actually change anything.

The song book that we use at our church is rather pieced together, and I am looking for software that I can use to scan it all in, and set all the songs to the same font. The only thing I know of is Photoscore, but that is a little out of my budget. If you know of anything open source for Linux, that would be great.

I've read a few things on this forum that people can read their .cbr's but those posts were back in 2005. Is there a known problem with cbr and karmic? If not how do I fix this? I'm way behind on my comic reading since I moved to ubuntu and I need to catch up!

I've been trying to find a way to take a bunch of jpeg images and while maintaining their quality (no loss at all) compile them in such a way as to make one coherent file. Maybe something like a pdf, but while maintaining quality. I've tried converting to pdf and djvu, but the quality is always reduced, but if you know of a way to preserve quality, I'll use it.An alternative is an image viewer that can look inside archives, so I just make a zip or tgz of the images and then use the image viewer to access them. I've tried a few

I just installed 10.10 and am trying to install java. I opened the terminal and got java and the install went fine. Then the terminal turned into a light blue background that says "Package Configuration" with a grey text box titled "Configuring sun-java-jre" and then has the java license agreement.I pressed enter assuming that would accept the agreement but it did not. How do I accept the license agreement so the installation can continue...?

I frequently run teamviewer on my netbook because it's my favorite remote desktop application, but it doesn't have an option to run at startup nor hidden. This is what I need:o be able to run teamviewer automatically at startup, hidden as a "service?" (meaning no taskbar button nor tray icon) and with a delay of 20 seconds (it has to be started after my wifi has automatically connected, not before).Can't be so hard, but I don't seem to be able to find a good answer to this in Google.

I'm running Utorrent server and I figure I would create an alias to launch the program and run it in the background.alias utorrent='/home/user1/software/utorrent-server-3.0/utserver &'It seems to run the program but the associated webui program is flaky and won't start correctly.If I manually go to the specified path and run the command ./utserver & , I never seem to have an issue with the webui.I was wondering if this could possibly have anything to do with using the '&' ampersand operator in an alias.

I think my title pretty much explains it. I am writing a script and I want to start a program in the background, and when that program finishes I want to check the return value to make sure there was no error.For example normal I would do something like this:
#!/bin/sh
program
if [ ! $? -eq 0 ]; then
echo "There was an error"
exit 1
fi
Now I want to do something like this:
#!/bin/sh
PRTN=`program1 &`
program2
if [ ! $? -eq 0 ]; then
[code]....
In this case if program2 finishes before program1, I don't think the return value from program1 $PRTN would be valid at the time it is checked.

I have a script that calls another program/script, xxx, to run in the background. Supposedly this program at most should finish within five (5) minutes so after five (5) minutes, I run some other steps to run the script into completion. My problem is sometimes the program takes longer than five (5) minutes and this is causing problems when running the rest of the steps in the scripts. Can anyone suggest how to re-program my script. At the moment, the KSH script, i.e. test.ksh, is doing as below:
test.ksh:
.....
.....
xxx/xxx.ksh <--- program/script called by the script
sleep 300
..... run the rest of the script .....
..... problem is sometimes xxx/xxx.ksh takes longer than 300 seconds .....
..... any way that I can monitor that xxx/xxx.ksh finishes before I run .....
..... the rest of the scripts .....

I wonder how one can, if at all, run an X program in the background *in an emulator sub-shell process*. What I mean is to launch a program in an emulator, e.g, by xterm -e gedit
but with gedit (in this example) running in the background from inside the xterm sub-process, so that the xterm will accept other commands. In the above, gedit will run in the foreground, and of course, if you do
xterm -e gedit &
then xterm will run in the background, not gedit.In short, I would like to achieve the same thing as "gedit &" as you manually do in xterm, but from another shell. What I aim to do is write an X init script to achieve this result (to have the emulator open and a program or two running from it, in the background, at the X startup).

I'm trying to figure out how to continue execution of a Python program while a background task is going on.
In bash, it is adding "&" to the end as in:
Code:
#! /bin/bash
find / -iname "*.py" > /tmp/all_pys &
echo "looking for all python scripts and putting them in /tmp/all_pys"
(yes, I know I could just put the echo BEFORE the find but I just use it for example)
Say I do that in python (not necessarily running the shell, but perhaps using scriptutil.ffind or something similar), but want to allow the user to be doing something else while running that search in the background, how would I thread, fork, subprocess (not to be confused with the module and Popen) [or whatever I should call it] that?

It seems to have become the default reader now. However, I never wanted to change from Evince :this simple program is well enough for me. I tried various ways, but I can't define Evince as my default .pdf reader. How can I make Evince to become my default reader again please ?

In my .bashrc I have the following lines to turn on colors for grep and ls alias ls='ls --color=auto'export GREP_OPTIONS='--color=auto'.I've tried changing the alias to export LS_OPTIONS='--color=auto' but that doesn't work.Is there anyway to use an export instead of alias. And are there actually any benefits to one way over the other?

I'm using Kubuntu 9.10 and I have a problem with my screen. I use the nvidia driver downloaded from the website, installed manually as I always do. I wanted to update it, but when I press ctr-alt-F1 to go to the console to stop kdm, I cannot see the usual black screen, but only a very strange blinking screen with lines and colours, strange symbols like $ & %. This happens for every F1 until F6, then F7 luckily brings me again on the graphical desktop.
I tried to install the drivers from the "Hardware drivers" manager in Kubuntu, but nothing changed. I don't know if it's an issue related to the kernel or to the driver. But I don't know how to update it without F1 console, and however it's a serious issue because I cannot do anything in case of desktop failure. The kernel is the last officially released (I don't use the proposed repos), that is 2.6.31-19.

After I succesfully instaled ubuntu 10.04 server, I applied
export PC1="[e[36;1m]u@[e[31;1m]h:w$ [e[32m"
and my prompt was nice and colorfull. But, when I make logout and login, my prompt appears all green ([e[32m.) After restart, nevertheless, it looses color settings (of course) and appears plain white.
What should I do in order to keep my prompt color settings permanently?

I upgraded to Natty, some images appear in negative colours in Firefox, but not all. For example, photos on Facebook have negative colours, but not the thumbnail versions of the profile pictures do not. I have tried reinstalling Firefox in Synaptic to no avail. On another partition I have an installation of openSUSE 11.4 sharing the same /home (and therefore all Firefox settings etc), but no negative colours.
