i've just installed openSUSE 11.3 on my dell studio xps 1640. but i have problem with my WLAN . it's a WLAN 1640 mini-card and i think there is no problem with driver. because it seems that it's installed correctly but i can't see any wireless networks (it says "Device is not ready"). is there any suggestions?by the way, when i turn my wireless to on (it's a touch key not a switch) only my bluetooth indicator is enabled not my wifi indicator.

I'm a big book lover so I read a lot. On windows I used Alreader for it's incredible handyness & it had a smooth lite brown background color. So it was easier for my eyes to read books in rtf, txt & so on formats instead of the default white background which is very annoying. Can you please suggest me a software like that for linux?

I use ubuntu on about 3 machines, have installed it many times, and run it virtually with software and been using Ubuntu and many other distros for about 8 months now. I am still pretty much a noob and when it comes to CLI I have no clue and need it all spelled out for me. So I'll cut to the problem. My problem is that about every 10-15 minutes my netbook (Samsung N130 1.6ghz atom 2GB 800mhz RAM 160GB HDD and 128mb GMA GPU). All of my other ubuntu or any other linux distro for that matter do not have this problem I am about to explain.
So it gives me a false signal that the HDD is in use. Like an example... I'll be browsing a web page and all of a sudden it stops... I'm not running anything else or downloading anything internet is there and just stops. I can move the mouse and when I hover over objects it highlights but a click is unresponsive. And I have noticed everytime it does this it lasts about 20 seconds and the HDD indicator light stays a solid color but when I listen the HDD is it's normal sound (no ripping of data or anything).

i used WUBI to put Ubuntu on an SD card. i ran it off that for a while, and keeping my Vista. then i tried upgrading to to 10.10. there was even a special installer for GRUB in the process.
that's when the problem started. after my comp finished the upgrade, it restarted. but this time, in grub rescue. i tried some of the codes in the wiki, but everything came up unknown command. then someone in the chat told me to use a Live CD and a Super GRUB2 cd.
the LiveCD booted to a screen with a picture of a "keyboard=person with a circle around it". then after a few minutes of just that, lines of text reading:EDD: error 8000 reading sector 3567 EDD: error 8000 reading sector 3577 (and more with consecutive numbers) the Super GRUB2 cd let me get the OS list i usually get from starting up. only Vista would start up without problem. Ubuntu had.. a problem i cant recall right now.
i redid the Live CD, and im back in Ubuntu. i tried the ways of reinstalling GRUB2, as advised by the chats, but nothing seemed to work as described in the reinstallation section of this.
and that is where i stand right now. also, my SD drive's light doesn't turn off now, even when there is no card in it. im kind of worried that when GRUB installed at the 10.10 upgrade, it made that a partisan.

to turn off the sound icon in the indicator-applet since it never loads right on the theme for one user and i already set gnome-volume-control-applet to run at startup to replace it i just cant figure out how to remove it without un-installing it which would effect all usersedit seems resizing the panel will make the default icon work so i make a script using gconf-tool to change the size 2 times at startup to fix it

I'm completely new to openSUSE and when I installed it, my wireless card isn't apparently found. The light on the keyboard doesn't turn on signaling there is a wireless card. I should have also said I'm using the KDE thing, not the GNOME.

I just scanned a book recently and as what happens in these situations , the borders get dark I just looking for a simple way (prefer command line) to solve this problem maybe, crop pictures for cutting out the borders and then change the dimension (NOT MEAN STRETCH) to regain original size I am not sure , but any others ways that can turn black border areas to white one is fine with me.

In my top right corner I got all my Ubuntu appindicators that come with Ubuntu 11.04. I also have Dropbox, caffeine and screenlets. Problem is that I cant click on dropbox, caffeine, battery indicator, wlan or sound indicator until I first click on messages menu and slide over to appindicator that I need. When screenlets appindicator is not present there is no problem. Its the same when I had Jupiter installed.

I'm trying to recover files from a desktop PC which has 4 HD running on a RAID (0+1) set-up. Now it would appear that either Vista Raid has failed (which I think will be the issue) or one or more of the HD partions has become corrupt. So, I have installed Ubuntu Live on USB and have succesfully booted; however, Ubuntu does not appearing to be loading as it is stuck on "loading essential drivers".

Some packages could not be installed. This may mean that you have requested an impossible situation or if you are using the unstable distribution that some required packages have not yet been created or been moved out of Incoming. Since you only requested a single operation it is extremely likely that the package is simply not installable and a bug report against that package should be filed. The following information may help resolve the situation:
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
libc6-i386: Breaks: ia32-libs (< 20090804) but 2.2ubuntu11 is to be installed
Breaks: lib32asound2 (< 1.0.20-3) but 1.0.15-3ubuntu4 is to be installed
E: Broken packages
I thought apt would automatically install the package dependencies. I don't really want to update the entire installation as I have a lot of network services installed and running which I don't want to risk breaking. They aren't exposed to the internet and don't pose a security risk. So is there any way to get apt to install the dependencies for build-essential?

I need to install ns-allinone-2.34(network simulator v. 2.34) on my Ubuntu OS. I searched the web and found some useful sites describing the installation steps.they say that before installing ns2 I need to install some essential libraries using the command below
$ sudo apt-get build-essential autoconf automake libxmu-dev
while executing this command I am getting the following error
E: Could not get lock /var/lib/dpkg/lock - open (11 Resource temporarily unavailable)
E: Unable to lock the administration directory (/var/lib/dpkg/), is another process using it?
I don't even know what this command refers to. Please help me in understanding this command and also tell how to rectify the error as i need this software for my course as well as for my project on Ad Hoc networks.

I have a customers' HP laptop that I've been doing work on. The HP came with Vista Home Premium pre-installed and the system was infected with the insidious Vista Antivirus 2010 virus.Well, after doing some registry cleaning I was able to get rid of that virus, but I suggested to the customers to check out Ubuntu, which they agreed to do.Here's my problem:
The HP has a recovery drive, which I formatted to make room for some of the pictures, documents and music they wanted to retain.I'm in the process of installing Ubuntu 9.10 and don't want to erase the recovery partition D:, which is labeled as /dev/sda2in the prepare disk space portion of the setup.I've moved to specify partition manually, but I'm uncertain as to how to configure this. When I installed Ubuntu on my own system, I just deleted Windows and used the entire disk space, so this is something new to me

I'm having headaches about not being able to install build-essential on my 9.10. I don't have an internet connection and no CDrom. [URL]. So that solves it if you have a CD drive... What to do if a poor fella (like me) was to have a system with no CD drive? I installed from USB PENDRIVE and I suppose there have to be some command corresponding to apt-cdrom but for the USB drive but I can't find one.

I recently had to install Python 2.7 to run some specific cripts and so tried to uninstall Python 2.6 so that I didn't have to worry about path conflicts. It seems that when uninstalling the Python package it's stripped most of the apps from my installation, including fairly essential stuff like the terminal. It also seemed to stop accepting my password as a root user, though I'm hoping a reboot may fix that.
Can anyone provide a listing of the default packages that Ubuntu ships with please so I can try to repair my system? I tried looking through ones I might know but it appears for example that while Bash is installed I have no Terminal entry under Applications.

I fruitlessly tried to understand the mechanism of package clean in Debian. There are two types of packages: the one that are essential for user and dependencies of these packages. How could I found where the list of essential packages is kept in Debian? (in Gentoo it is called world-file)
dkpg -l shows me the list of all packages installed.
