Software :: Always Open A Window At The Same Position In GNOME?
Jun 5, 2011
For something I'm working on, it would be incredibly useful to open a program (qemu, specifically), and have the window by default reside at a set position (in this instance, on the second monitor in the upper left corner). I can do this with gnome-terminal, but that seems to be the only application to have a feature like this this.Is it possible to do this independent of the application itself, so that it would work with any applicatio

I am running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.
The issue is that Gnome will not "remember" the size and location of the window in which an app was last run. For example - I run Disk Usage Analyzer and stretch the window to be the full height of the screen and about half the width of the screen and move it to the far left of the desktop. I then close the app. The next time I run it the app comes up in a "default" window size, not the size I last used, positioned randomly on the desktop.
p.s. I should add that some apps seem to remember their prior window size/position. For example OpenOffice.org, Firefox, Nautilus.

After a cleaning of some software from my ubuntu (Jaunty) desktop I am no longer able to open a terminal window in Gnome.I tried to reinstall gnome terminal from synaptic but this made no difference...In the command line that you get with Alt-F2 I tried the code: man ls
and a terminal window opens but after exiting the man page (q) it disappears!

In X windows, for both a window you're opening in a terminal at the time, and for one that's already open, how can you set the window to a precise location? That is, is there a parameter you can add to the command of opening a program to set the window to a specific location, say pixel 30x30? Likewise, is there a way to set the position of a window that's already open to a specific location?

I'm running Fedora 11 (same problem on my 32 and 64bit systems), I have Logitech bluetooth mice and keyboards hooked up to both of my systems. Occasionally, one of my keyboards stops responding and I simply open up the Bluetooth Preferences window, delete the keyboard and then set it up again. However, now when I click the Setup New Device button, nothing happens! This is happening on two seperate systems. Am I to believe this is the result of a bad update? I've checked my yum log and it hasen't updated any bluetooth packages for a few weeks now and this just started the other day. Any ideas what could be wrong?

Is there a way to alter the default position that windows open such that if I have an application that I want to open (for example) with the lower right corner in the lower right corner of the screen or in the middle of the screen, etc, this can be done automatically? In KDE it can be done by right clicking and adjusting application properties. I don't see how to do that in Gnome. I'm using Fedora 13 with Gnome.

I noticed that by default most of my programs start with their window on the top left (at least with my configuration) and I'd like them to start at the middle of my screen. Here's an example. I open (for the first time after logging in) System monitor, and it appears there:URL]How can I do this? I would also like them (the windows) to remember where I've placed them the last time I've used, for example, I want pidgin to start on the right and at the bottom, chrome in the middle, nautilus a bit at the top right, ... how can I do thisDIT: Ok, in Compiz there's an option to put it on the middle, with a 'smart' position, ... but nothing to remember the last position and size!

For the last year I was using the version of Firefox that came with 32-bit Karmic Koala. Recently I installed 64-bit Maverick. Meerkat, so I'm now using Firefox 3.6.10. Previously, when first opening Firefox, the window aligned to the left edge of the screen. Now it is centered. The window dimensions are correctly retained between sessions, but not the position. Can I get it to open at the left again?

I've been making a "gui" for a script to help automate some of the steps involved in customizing a live cd with zenity. I have a menu with radio buttons for each option. When I pick "Remove a package manually", I have it show all of the installed packages as well as a text box for me to type the name into. The only downside to this method is that the package window overlaps the text box. Is there a way to change the window position of zenity windows?

I lastly used KDE (version 1.x ). Now I'm using KDE 3.5 for several weeks and one thing really annoys me: there are a lot of programs that don't remember their last window position and/or size. They always default to a specific location/size when I close and open them again. I give you some examples:
Program that doesn't remember anything:
- Konqueror
Program that remembers window size, but not position:
- KMail
Nice Program that remembers everything:
- Basket Note Pads
Is there a way to tell these programs to remember their position/size?And a second question about konqueror: Can I tell konqueror to remember the view mode? I prefer MultiColumn view, but it always defaults to Icon view.

Is there any way to position subtitles in Totem in a bottom on the black border of the 16:9 movie when showing in the full screen of 4:3 monitor?Or not necessarely in fullscreen, but in a window where black borders are on the top and underneath the actual video frames.
Now always the subtitles covers part of the video on the bottom, which is a shame as there would be empty space underneath also.
The same question for VLC.
Subtitles, would be in the external file.
And I am not looking a solution which would need transencoding the video file.
btw, for GNOME Mplayer, the solution is to put "-vf expand=:-100::2" into Edit/Preferences/Mplayer/Extra_options_to_Mplayer

I'm running ubuntu 11.04. from time to time, the unity launcher gets stuck in an open position, preventing me from clicking anything on the left side of the screen. this is terribly annoying. is there a *simple* way to change the properties of the icons in the launcher? I have there some custom application launchers that were automatically imported to the launcher during upgrade (they were in the top menu).

I recently upgraded the motherboard/processor on my computer (as in quadrupled the processor and octupled the ram). The new board has a built in GPU (intel) and from searching the forums, I think this is part of the problem. Every time I boot up the computer, I need to open the Compiz icon and use it to reload the window manager before I see any title bars, borders, etc. 've tried the .bashrc hack (metacity --replace), but that doesn't do anything. In fact, whenever I open the terminal, I need to have two tabs open in order to use it, and when I close it all the borders go away again (even when I haven't done anything). Also, the onboard sound card (intel) doesn't work, but that's another task (I at least have a compatible card for that).

My system boots, I login and am brought to my desktop. I click on the file system icon in the launcher to open a Nautilus window. The window opens, but is unresponsive (i.e., I can't move it, clicking on the icons does nothing, etc.). If I press the super key to get the dash and the press escape, the window becomes responsive again, just like normal.
If I open a folder in the window, the window becomes halfway unresponsive in that I can't move the window, but I can select more folders and toolbar icons. The top menu no longer appears at this point, and I can't access any of the system icons on the top right of the screen. Alt-F4 closes the window even if the close button doesn't work.As another example, suppose I open a Nautilus window and then a Chromium window. Both are immediately unresponsive. If I super-esc again, I can move the Chromium window around, and it seems to work normally. I can click on the Nautilus window, but it always stays greyed out. Even if I'm clicking on things in it, the Chromium window always has focus.
I had a similar experience to this with VLC and Chromium. After clicking around enough I eventually got it to the point where VLC apparently always had focus, but I couldn't access any of VLC's controls. Double clicking anywhere on the screen fullscreened the video, and that's all I could really do. Not even escape worked to bring it back.I can usually press super to get the dash and Alt-F2 to get a command prompt. Also Alt-Shift-T seems to usually work to bring up a working Terminal (at least one that accepts commands, even if I can't move the window).Does anyone have any ideas on what might be causing this? The behavior is highly unpredictable and extremely frustrating. I should note that key commands don't always work, even though they seem to in my examples. So I don't think it's just a mouse issue.

I am having trouble getting NS2 to open the nam window. I have used it before in the same settings, but that was a year ago. It doesn't work now for some reason. I keep getting the error: No protocol specified nam: couldn't connect to display ":0.0". This worked fine a year ago and nothing has changed. I am running it remotely from my school network just like I did then. I am also using a bash shell.

I want to run Evolution at starup, but want to place it out of the way on the opposite side of the Compiz cube. In KDE, you can run a command like this:
Code:
kstart --desktop 3 evolution
Is there an equivalent for GNOME/Compiz? I would preferably like to avoid using anything like Devilspie.

I am doing some project work and for that using the server at college with ssh connection. Every time I try to open emacs on the terminal after connecting, it opens emacs in the terminal itself i.e. not its own window. On my laptop on which ubuntu is installed, emacs always opens up in its own window an thats how I am used to it. There are several problems when it opens in the terminal like when I try to use commands such as M-V, actually terminal's view menu opens up, its very frustrating. Also I am pretty sure that the college server runs on red hat and has X installed on it. So what do I need to do to get my emacs window back.

I've got a big problem on a F10 (i386) box. I work with KDE 4.3.1. The open and save dialogue of gtk(Gnome) crashes in many applications. It works in audacity. It crashes in gimp, firefox, thunderbird, xsane and gtkpod. The is alleyways a "Segmentation fault" in the console output. See below. I all ready reinstalled all gtk-packages.

This issue exists with the Private Message popup in Firefox, which if I accept to open it the window is set to 100x100 (very small).
Now the complication. It never was like this. It's not a mozilla setting issue either because I tried a new .mozilla with the same results.

To get to the point, when viewing a video in fullscreen, I notice that the initial VLC window remains open under the fullscreen video output. Sometimes the initial video window is under the fullscreen output causes a bit of screen tearing. How do I enable VLC that when in fullscreen mode, only it opens, to be together with the main interface instead of two windows running? Im not sure that im making sense but this does not happen in Windows. I want a similar function here in Ubuntu.
