Networking :: New Slackware 13 Install - Slow Internet?

Jan 24, 2010

After installing Slackware 13 and configuring it as a router, I'm getting very slow internet speeds on my clients. It takes forever to connect to a website or downloading 100mb bin file also takes forever. On the Slackware box the speed is fine though. When I boot from my previous Slackware 12 drive, the speed on the clients is ok again.

I have compared config files from my old and new installation and haven't found a difference. from other posts I learnt that disabling IPv6 by adding it to the blacklist could help. But this didn't help me either. I have also compared a traceroute on both installations. This also doesn't show a (big) difference.

The only difference I have found is that in my Slackware 13 setup the following modules are loaded while with my old Slackware 12 lsmod is empty.

Code:

The only thing I can think of is a missing option in the kernel. I have used the huge-smp from the Slackware DVD, assuming this would have all the important stuff enabled by default. It this right?

Some additional info:
eth0: nVidia Corporation MCP51 Gb onboard Gb NIC, connected to LAN (static)
eth1: 3COM 3C2000 Gb NIC, connected to cable modem (dhcp)
dhcpd is running to configure clients in the network
arno-firewall installed

Files I have compared with my old (working) system:

Slackware :: Enable Windows Wireless Drivers In Slackware 13.1 And How To Install XFCE

Aug 22, 2010

I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

Slackware :: 13.1 - Xpdf Very Slow And Cpu Goes To 100%

Nov 14, 2010

I'm gonna tell you about slackware installation on my notebook, an acer travelmate 800lci.

On this notebook, I successfully installed (and work with) slackware from version 10.0 till the recent 13.0. Upgrading to a new version till using a new internal hard disk (from 40 GB to 160 GB). After upgrade I fully reinstall slackware 12.2 and then upgrade to 13.0.

Now, I had to use the notebook for testing, so I made a new full installation of slackware 13.0 and after some time a new full installation of slackware 13.1.

On this disk (160 GB P-ATA) I have to pass the following parameter to the kernel:

during installation and boot.

This operation solve the issue that can "see" the full size of the disk (160 GB) and not the 137 GB limit.

Only using slackware 13.1, occur a big (for me) problem.

I can fully reproduce it opening any pdf document with xpdf: moving into document with arrow keys make the cpu goes to 100% and page "fault/s" goes from 30 to 8000 and some times 15000 "fault/s". So, xpdf becomes unusable. This problem reflects in similar manner to other software, like firefox.

Here is my question: what type of analisys could I try to solve/analyze this issue? Maybe the kernel, xorg?

On slackware 13.0 all works perfectly.

Slackware :: Slow DSN Lookup With 64

Sep 7, 2010

I've been comparing the current Slackware 32 bit versus 64 bit, and I've noticed that the 64 bit version is as slow as dialup for domain name lookup.

The 32 bit version is very fast to find websites after a mouse click, whereas the 64 bit version takes forever looking up URLs. (using Firefox)

All the other 64 bit Linuxes seem to be the same way, not just Slackware.

The /etc/resolve.conf file is the same for 32 or 64 bit Slackware, but something is not right. The 32 bit version has a /etc/dhcpc directory, but not the 64 bit version.

Could this be causing the extreme slowdown?

It's really very irritating when the rest of the system is blazing fast.

Slackware :: New 13 X64 Installation - Slow DNS Lookup ?

Mar 31, 2010

I've been cracking on with getting a new Slackware 13 x64 installation going. I've got a problem with browsing the net which I can't put my finger on.

When I try to access a site my machine spends a long time with the "Looking up www.website.com" message at the bottom. It can take 7-12 seconds before the site is found. Normally I would blame this on my ISP or connection but Mint, Debian and Windows XP aren't having this problem, they just zip straight to the site whether I've been to it before or not.

Is anybody aware of where the problem might be? It's not in the browser either because Opera, Seamonkey and Firefox all have the same problem issue.

Slackware :: PSX Emulator Extremely Slow On 12.2

The dependencies for the emulator are:
opengl
gtk
alsa
gtkglext
libxml

I found the appropriate packages for all of these (with the exception of opengl, I assume that means it's preinstalled, correct me if I'm wrong) and installed them. the emulator runs, at about a quarter the speed it's supposed to. I get no error messages in the terminal, just the huge speed drop. has anybody else gotten this emulator to work fine in slackware?

Slackware :: Intel Driver Isn't Being Used And KDE Slow?

Mar 4, 2010

I upgraded to -current last night hoping to improve my Intel 845G graphics controllers functioning in X, I've had to use the vesa driver for stability. The upgrade was completed but KDE seems as slow as ever. Here's some snippets from Xorg.0.log:

X.Org X Server 1.7.5
Release Date: 2010-02-16
X Protocol Version 11, Revision 0
Build Operating System: Slackware 13.1 Slackware Linux Project
Current Operating System: Linux speedy 2.6.33-smp #2 SMP Sat Feb 27 20:12:16 CST 2010 i686

It seems I'm still using the vesa driver, any ideas on why the intel isn't being used and how to fix it?

Slackware :: Slow Startup (/etc/rc.d/rc.M) With Wireless?

Jan 19, 2010

My Slack takes some time to boot. It hangs about 5 secs in a line that reads:

Quote:
/etc/rc.d/rc.M: eth1 information: "MySSID" Then, it polls for a DHCP server on eth1 (I didn't write down the exact message). I noticed that if my router is off, the polling process take quite some time to move on.. I tried to look the rc.M, rc.inet1 and rc.wireless scripts, but I couldn't pin point what to change... I tought of adding an '&' at the end of the command that issues the line I quoted and on the DHCP. The DHCP line I didn't search much, I'll try it later...

Slackware :: Opera 10.60 Very Slow To Start New Links

Jul 8, 2010

I've been using Opera 10.11 on two different computer systems, two different locations (work & home), and two different Slackware versions (13 & 13.1 current). Opera 10.11 runs very quickly on both. After upgrading to Opera 10.60, I now find that linking to new web pages takes 5 to 10 seconds, but returning to a previous page is almost instantaneous.

I've tried installing 10.60 using slackbuilds and Opera's installer - both give the same results. I've since reverted to Opera 10.11. why it is so slow to open web pages? Opera 10.60 for Win7 works great, so what happened to the Linux version?

Slackware :: Slow Dns Resolution With A Netcomm Router?

Jul 26, 2010

i have a nb5plus4w modem/router at home which acts as a dhcp server on my lan. upon connection it instructs the clients to use 192.168.1.1 as a dns server (which is the ip address of the router) and linux machines are happy to use that in /etc/resolv.conf. now the issue is that under these conditions dns resolution is sloooow. there have been some discussions on the net saying that the router is not a 'real' dns server (don't know what that means), but the only way i have been able to get around the issue is to edit /etc/resolv.conf to use my isp's dns servers and then chattr -i the file so that dhcpcd doesn't change it.

this approach works for the desktop and even though it is ugly it's effective. the laptop is a different issue. if i take it out of the house i have to chattr -i and let the new network put it's dns addresses in and then change it all back when i get home so, the question is... can i do something to stop doing chattr and get the dns performance of a windows machine (dns resolution is quick on the windows machines)?

Slackware :: Slow Graphics With 13.37 And Radeon Mobility X1600

May 4, 2011

I've upgraded (reinstalled) from Slackware 13.1 to 13.37 on an old iMac and have problems with slow graphics.
lspci says this about the graphics card:

Code:

With Slackware 13.1 I had no KMS enabled and graphics speed was okay. It wasn't very good, but okay for everyday work. Now with 13.37 it's extremely slow. glxgears runs with only around 38 fps, no matter what I do. And every now and then when logging off, I get a black screen and no new kdm-login. But I can ssh into that machine and restart X by issuing 'init 3;init 4'.

KMS is enabled (I've also tried disabling it, but then KDE crashes right after logging in) and it's a fresh installation of 13.37 with a 2.6.37.6 kernel.

What can I do?

I have to admin I don't know this video and X stuff very well and I used to have machines with NVIDIA cards.

If there's anything else than the usual Xorg.0.log needed.

To me the log doesn't look like there's any problem whatsoever:

Slackware :: Windows 7/Slackware Dual Boot, Different Discs?

Sep 19, 2010

My new job requires I use Windows and as such I put a second HDD in my laptop for the purposes of Window/Work The issue is that Windows will not install on this second disc (Windows cannot create partition or install to disc). I got around this by installing Windows to the first disc, then the second then putting Slackware back on the first but then I suffer the "Bootmgr cannot be found, press ctrl + alt + delete to restart".

I am using Lilo and I have never really had an issue dual booting them on the same disc (Admittedly over a year ago) but it is of the utmost important I have them on separate Discs. Has anyone encountered this and/or know a way around?
