Slackware :: Disk Space Lost- Root Partition Has Very Little Space Left

Jan 31, 2010

Today I was installing a lot of software since I'm just setting up my Slackware system again after a fresh install, and I realized that my root partition has very little space left.

Here is the output of df -h:

Code:

As you can see, I have a 20G (19G here for some reason) root partition, 8G /var, and 86G of /home. I thought this would be plenty since many recent recommendations for / are 10-15G. Now, though, 17G are used up for some reason! How is this possible? I thought a full slackware install only had about 4G of software! I don't have any music or movies or any crazy huge files that I know of, and those would be in my /home directory anyway. Is there any way I can see which files are taking up all this space?

If it's necessary to allocate more space to my / partition, is it still possible to boot up a GParted live Cd, shrink /home a bit, move some partitions to the right, and expand my root partition? I would REALLY prefer I don't have to reinstall since I just spent a ton of time setting up my system again, but if worst comes to worst ... :'-(

In case you're curious, here's my /etc/fstab:

Ubuntu :: Brub2 Slow - Single Disk Machine?

Jan 3, 2010

I am running Ubuntu 9.10 x64 on a relatively old laptop and I find Grub is taking about 20 seconds to initially load before booting the system. The laptop only has a single 120GB hard drive, and I chose the "use entire disk" option when installing, so I do not have any fancy partitioning scheme. When the system boots I get the "LOADING GRUB" text displayed and then shortly after it just shows the flashing cursor with no text, and stays there for about 20 seconds. After that it finally starts loading the system. All the searching I have done only turned up solutions relevant to people with multiple hard drives. This was not an issue on Grub 1.

Hardware :: Reduced Disk Space / Use The Total Amount Of Space?

While installing OS, in partition window after OS file system structure I've left 277 GB. But after installation it shows Size - 255GB and available disk space is 242 GB.

Isn't it weired? How can I use the total amount of space in Linux? I need the whole 277GB exactly. What should be my workaround?

Ubuntu :: USB Disk - Slow Transfer Speeds And Slow System?

Apr 17, 2011

Whenever I transfer a movie into my 16GB USB flash disk, my whole system becomes windows-like and unusable!

When i drag the file(s) into the USB disk folder, it starts out fine and pretty darn fast (25mb/sec) then slowly decreases until it's unbearably slow (3m/sec) and as a side effect my whole system starts deteriorating. I basically have to wait for the file to finish transferring before i can use my desktop again!

This has been happening with every version since Karmic (all 64bit)- I put up with it because I don't use the USB stick that much.. but lately it's been my go to source for transfering large files to/from work.

Ubuntu :: Disk Full - Can't Free Any Disk Space

Jan 2, 2010

I'm running mythbuntu 9.04 and am having an issue with disk space.

I try 'rm' various log files but the space I free up lasts less than a minute before the disk reports as being full once more.

df -Th | sort gives:

Quote:

/dev/sda1 ext3 8.3G 7.9G 0 100% /
/dev/sda6 ext3 138G 125G 6.3G 96% /music
/dev/sda7 xfs 783G 617G 167G 79% /videos
/dev/sdb2 xfs 344G 242G 103G 71% /recordings

[Code]....

There's nothing enormous in /var/log and my trash and the root trash are empty.

why size and used fields are not the same despite 100% usage being reported on sda1..

General :: Disk Utility And Df Show Different Disk Space ?

Nov 18, 2010

I don't understand disk sizes in Linux. I have a 500GB drive. It's ext4. I have run "tune2fs -m 0" on it to reserve the amount of space reserved for root to 0.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04 that comes with a Disk Utility. When I run "System->Administration->Disk Utility (palimpsest)" the disk shows up as 500GB (see picture). But when I run df -h it shows up as 459GB. So, I don't understand the discrepancy.

When I run df I get the following:

Question: Why is Disk Utility showing me something different than "df"?

df -h [URL] I did the following command to find everything is in /usr or /var, then tracked it down to /usr/lib and /usr/share as the main offenders, but out of all the directories none are more than 1mb or so.

du -sh /* | sort -gr | head -n 5

I tried to uninstall firefox, which is what got me in this mess in the first place, the log claims it will remove ~240 mb but failes on a "E: Write error - write (28 No space left on device)" [URL] If I could juggle something onto an external hard drive so I can uninstall firefox I would be out of the wood. I'm running out of space in wubi. Online wubi help didn't help much since they suggest creating extra virtual disk space(similar to having a diffrent partition i guess) .None of them speak about increasing the size of /root disk space(or root.disk). I store all files in space shared with windows or external disk and use ubuntu only to install and use softwares and browsing. So how do increase the available space for installing more softwares?

OpenSUSE Install :: Thread Scheduling Slow When Swap Space Is Exhausted?

Jun 13, 2011

Not sure if I have landed in right place for this question .Problem FacedI have 30-40 heavy load (Memory operations on heap) processor running with each having 30-40 threads. In one of the thread (of each process), I have file locking operation as explained below (say in thread T1)Step 1 - Lock the file using fcntl(SETWLK) on file f1, Basically using wait lock.Step 2 - Read/write data from another file f2.Step 3 - unlock the file f1.As the memory occupied by process increased, the swap area used will reduce - this continues for a long amount of period. When the free swap space is reduced to 100 MB free out of 2 G and VIRT reduces to 120MB free out of 17G, for T1 thread, Step 3 is not scheduled for more than 300 seconds after Step 1 and 2.

I want to understand why this behavior is present - as per my understanding scheduling will occur within micro-seconds and we can expect that the T1 thread of all process should be scheduled without too much delay.Additional InfomationMachine Info : (uname -a), Linux linux 2.6.16.46-0.12-smp#1 SMP Thu May 17 14:00:09 UTC 2007 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/LinuxMemory Info :Total Memory is 16GB + Swap Memory is 2GBI want to know why this behavior is observed in SUSE

2. After I do that, how do I set Ubuntu so that it's not still at 10 GB of disk space.

Red Hat / Fedora :: Not Enough Disk Space

Jun 22, 2011

I use windows and I want to install linux redhat beside it. So, in windows, I shrinked my Local Disk C 120gb, with Disk Management (control panel). During installation of redhat, I got to the step where I have to choose the partition where it will be installed.

First, I tried the 4th option ( use free space to create a partition), but it gave me error: Not enough disk space. So, I tried the 5th option ( create a new partition). It showed me the partitions on my pc, and showed me : Free, of size 120 gb. I tried to create a new partition, but it gave me the same error.

Why is this happening although I have 120 gb free (unallocated)?

Ubuntu Servers :: SAMBA Is Slow On Newer Machine?

Feb 26, 2011

It takes 45min to transfer 10MB from my laptop to my replacement server. It takes 1minute to transfer the same 10MB from my laptop to the old server.

All connections are equal. Both servers are plugged to the same router.

Details: I have decided to migrate away from my Proliant 1600 to a slightly newer less complex piece of hardware.

Both machines are LAMP installs. Both are setup to be maintained headless 99% of the time and gnome is launched from the command line only when it is needed.

The older machine has more things running on it than the replacement. The replacement has nothing running that the older machine does not have.

Old box runs Ubuntu 6.06 but was fully updated a month ago. Replacement box runs Ubuntu 10.10 and was fully updated just last night.

smb.conf was the same on both boxes other than the share locations. Reading trying to fix it myself, I did put some known speedup lines into the new box's smb.conf, but it did not make a noticeable difference.

Hardware:
Old box,
Proliant 1600 = 1998 small server tech. (weighs 50lbs w/o drives)
single 500mhz xeon (upgradable to 2 600mhz, though they are hard to find reasonably priced)
1GB SDRAM with ECC

[Code].....

It does not matter what share/drive/partition I transfer to on either machine. The result is always the same.

On the newer computer CPU usage rarely goes over 50% and it has not had to go into swap at all yet.

Maybe it's specific feature, but it does not seem right that within ~30 m to 1h 3gb of disk space on /home are gone due to I can't tell what exactly. Usually it happens while listening to music via vlc or browsing www (chrome and firefox). I got 3gigs of ram (95% in use under such conditions), and 1,5gb of swap that is not used at all by the system. Its a KDE.
