Slackware :: Slow Dns Resolution With A Netcomm Router?
Jul 26, 2010
i have a nb5plus4w modem/router at home which acts as a dhcp server on my lan. upon connection it instructs the clients to use 192.168.1.1 as a dns server (which is the ip address of the router) and linux machines are happy to use that in /etc/resolv.conf. now the issue is that under these conditions dns resolution is sloooow. there have been some discussions on the net saying that the router is not a 'real' dns server (don't know what that means), but the only way i have been able to get around the issue is to edit /etc/resolv.conf to use my isp's dns servers and then chattr -i the file so that dhcpcd doesn't change it.
this approach works for the desktop and even though it is ugly it's effective. the laptop is a different issue. if i take it out of the house i have to chattr -i and let the new network put it's dns addresses in and then change it all back when i get home so, the question is... can i do something to stop doing chattr and get the dns performance of a windows machine (dns resolution is quick on the windows machines)?

I'm interested in configuring two Netcomm NB504 WiFi routers to work in a Bridge configuration. ie. Local PCs ---> Router <----//----> Router <--- local PCs
The NB504 router doesn't appear to have a native "bridge" mode. However, it does run Linux according to the documentation. I'm interested to hear from anyone who has actually got two of these routers to work in a bridge configuration. I'm not interested in general theoretical comments - only solid advice. I am also not interested in using other hardware for this exercise - I have two of these devices available for use in this project.

I just installed and configured Slackware on an old computer I am using as a router.
The internet works fine on the slackware box (router) but all of the computers behind it are having issues. When browsing, some websites work perfectly fine, while others are slow to load, and a few don't load at all. I'm not really sure where to start on diagnosing this, so any help would be appreciated.
Also whenever I restart the computer, I have to use this command before the DHCP server will start. What do I have to do to get it to start up with the computer?

I want to get an adsl 1 internal pci modem card for my home server. Netcomm's NB100 seems to be the most readily available. Does anyone know if there are ubuntu drivers for it? If not can you suggest a card that does and is easy to get a hold of?

this is all on LAN.Whenever I transfer files through the router A to a pc connected wirelessly, the internet hit the speed of molasses. What can I do to rememdy this? I was thinking about having my fedora box connect wirelessly to the internet, through router A, and then bridge via ethernet to router B and then have my pc always connected to router B, so when i transfer files, router A remains unaffected. Is this correct logic?

I have a home network consisting of 1 Linux box running Fedora 13, a laptop running Windows XP, and an HP Officejet Pro L7780. With the Fedora 13 box I have Firefox 3.6.4. I have noticed in the last couple of days a very sluggish response seemingly one site, amazon.com. I'll connect to the site but Firefox remains loading the page and parts of it will be missing. If I search for a particular item it takes forever to display parts of the newly requested page. I have hit stop and then refresh and sometimes the page will then come up although it's never 100%. Eventually I'll loose my router (which by the way is a Linksys BEFSR8.1 v3.01), in that if I ping it I'll get the error that it is unreachable. The laptop also looses access to the router. I'll then reset it (unplug/plug) and it'll come back up ok until I go back to Amazon and start searching again.
My question(s) are:
Can a router go bad and just show up bad with one site initially? In other words is the router slowly dying? Can a problem with a site affect the router this way?I have also changed my namserver settings in /etc/resolv.config and on the router with no real change in symptoms. It's always Amazon and I don't seem to have issues with any other sites that I visit. Any clues?

I was introduced to Ubuntu about a year ago and recently decided to come back to using the OS. I now dual boot it with Windows XP Home. My former setup was with Wubi but now I have it installed on an actual partition. (The Wubi install, for whatever reason, had little internet problems.) I use wireless internet, and though my network card was recognized out of the box and can connect to my network, the Internet is very slow. It takes almost a minute to look up Google. Also, Firefox will often report that it cannot find the server for whatever website I try to look up, after trying to connect to it/look it up. I also cannot access the web configuration page for my router. (192.168.1.1). The network app reports that I often have a signal strength of 40% or lower. The following is my hardware/internet:
Ubuntu 9.04 Jaunty
TrendNet TEW-424UB adapter (54mbps)
Westell VersaLink 327W router
ISP: CenturyTel/CenturyLink High speed internet (512kbps)
I am the only Linux computer on my network. (There is no encryption on my network. I know there should be. but my parents are not very computer literate and they are the ones who have access to the network. It is easier just to go without.)
I have tried disabling ipv6, setting custom DNS server names under ipv4, and setting the wlan rate (or something similar) to 1492. Nothing works. This does not seem to be a network problem because my internet works fine in Windows, and I can access the configuration page for my router to change channels, PPP, etc..

I have, for awhile, had Ubuntu 10.04 as my main OS. I decided to go back to SW13.1, and added it in as dual-boot, with grub2 as my bootloader.
grub sees/boots SW fine.
But SW boots in 640x480, and is fugly, to say the least.
How do I change this? Grub currently runs at 1024x768. And in lilo, it's easy as pie to change the kernel boot resolution.
How do I do this in grub2? (Notice I said grub2, because it's MUCH different than grub, as far as config files and the like)

I have a problem with Lubuntu. First of all I installed it on my old laptop (amd sempron 1.6GHz, 512MB ram, s3g vga) as windows seemed to slow down my system. Installation was good, but the problem is screen resolution which is only 800x600 and there is no higher res option. Laptop's native is 1024x768. I searched a lot about how to change it but there is no post for lubuntu (everything is for ubuntu, xubuntu, and doesn't seem to work in here). Beyond that isse i I feel Lubuntu is running much better than windows and I want to use it. Using Lubuntu 11.04. Let me add that when I tried Lubuntu 10.04 it didn't have this problem (all resolutions where available).

I've just installed F12 64bit on my notebook. Everything works great. Only problem I'm having at the mo is my WLAN is slow at DNS resolution. On wired it works fine. I know it's not my access point as it is part if my router and I've rebooted it a few times. My other wireless notebook (Windows 7, Intel 3945ABG) doesn't have the same issue, and this notebook didn't when on Windows 7. I'm using OpenDNS as my forwarders. When I open a URL in Firefox (3.5.5) it opens the site immediately on wired. On wireless it will sit for 3-4 seconds before opening the site saying looking up .................. Once on the site browsing behaves normally.Anyone else having similar issues?

I'm having issues playing HD videos ( some with 720p level, much more apparent with 1080p level one) The video appears to slow then becomes choppy, becoming de synced from the audio that carries on as normal. This occurs with both VLC player and XBMC, though the latter is better. My specs: Fedora 12 3.2 Ghz P4 processor 1Gig ram Radeon 9800 xt gfx card (I couldn't get the 9.3 ati driver to work)

I have an adsl modem acting as a bridge to my router my setup was working well for more than year now , but then the internet went slow . I set the modem back to PPPoE the problem was with the DNS server of the ISP so using ifup i set the dns t 8.8.8.8 (google) the connection is back , but when i set the modem back as a bridge slow internet does the router know that my dns is 8.8.8.8 or i should set the dns on the router ? I can't see an option to set the dns on the router ( i just enter my username and password from the isp to use PPPoE mode ) by the way i called the isp support they kept telling me to restart , i told them i did but i never restarted my pc . I'm sure if i tell them i'm running linux they will blame the os !

I installed Slackware 13.37 a few days ago. It's not my first time but I have never setup a wireless connection in Linux before. I am pretty sure drivers for my network card, Asus PCE-N13, came ready to go with Slackware. After 2 days of reading guides about how to properly setup my rc.inet1.conf and rc.wireless.conf files I installed wicd today and it can't see my router.

My ISP provides my internet via DHCP. I have a home wireless router to provide internet access, wired for my desktop machine and wireless for my laptop. My question is: Is it possible to configure the router (the Access Point) to provide internet to the desktop and the laptop via static IP? Currently I have managed to configure the internet to them via DHCP and it works. I am just curious to know whether it is possible to provide the internet for them by static IPs, given that the internet that actually goes into the Access Point (the wireless home router), is DHCP.I fiddled with this a lot yesterday, but I only managed to get a working configuraton by DHCP for both the desktop and the laptop. If I supply them with static IPs, I can only ping the Access Point, but not beyond it. So does it at all make any sense to try to configure them by static IPs, i.e. is that virtually possible?

So I'm having troubles setting up a mail server. First of all, anyone want to try to telnet into <snip> on port 25 and see if it's blocked? I don't think it is, but you never know. How long does it usually take for MX records to get around? I've had this set up for about a day now and still don't see any MX records on any lookup site I go to. I'm currently using slackware 12.2's default sendmail configuration. Should I change anything? I started sendmail on my laptop and got emails going within the LAN but I cannot send emails over WAN (i.e. to/from yahoo or google accounts).e?

I am trying to get a Slackware server up and running. I got a static IP working kinda. The computer gets a response when I ping the router but not the internet. Basically it can communicate with other computers on the network but nothing outside of the network. Its not a problem with the router because I have a couple other computer with static IPs. Also the network card works fine as it can get on the internet fine normally.

After 2 weeks of the nightmare that is KDE4 I've been driven back to S12.2 and the sanity of KDE3.5.
However, I'm unable to get higher res than 1024x768. Monitor is a BenQ G222HDL and card is an ATI Radeon HD4760.
Relevant section of my xorg.conf is:
As you can see I've mucked about a little bit with alternative drivers and resolutions and poked around via google without anything obvious popping up, but I suppose the driver is the issue. # randr only ever gives me 'can't open display'. I realize this is a new monitor on an older OS. Should I try the xf86 drivers from ATI, or will running xorgconfig do the trick with such a new card?

Recently I have upgraded to Slackware-current (13.37.0) (fresh and full installation). In Slackware-13.0 I used the following command to bring up the ADSL connection: `ifconfig eth0 down; pppoe-start /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf' But in Slackware-current with the above command I cannot get name resolution from the server. So after searching and some trial and error I noticed that to bring up the ADSL connection in Slackware-current I have to invoke `pppoe-start' twice as follows:
`ifconfig eth0 down; pppoe-start /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf'
`pppoe-start /etc/ppp/pppoe.conf.ORG'
where `pppoe.conf' is linked to `pppoe.conf.ORG'

I'm having problems setting the resolution on my slackware.
xrandr:
Screen 0: minimum 640 x 480, current 800 x 600, maximum 800 x 600
default connected 800x600+0+0 0mm x 0mm
800x600 61.0*
640x480 60.0
I ran xorgsetup but nothing changed. I guess it's something with the vga, but I have no clue about that. why I can set only these small reslutions ?

I was given a Cisco IP Phone (model 7962) and CyberGuard Firewall/VPN (model SG300) from my company. So that I can work from home. But I've been struggling for the past couple of days trying to get it to work. The phone successfully configures it's ip; but it hangs on "Registering".
The setup is such:Cisco phone plugs into the CyberGuard and gets assigned a private IP address; 192.168.48.34; from the CyberGuard.
CyberGuard plugs into my Slackware (12.1) box and gets assigned a private IP address; 10.0.0.191; from the dhcpd server on my Slackware box.
Slackware box then masquerades that 10.0.0.191 into my static public address on the internet.
Port 1723 (PPTP) is open in the iptables firewall on my Slackware box. I've also tried disabling the firewall (ie opening all ports) on my Slackware box.
On my Slackware box; via iptraf; I can see traffic between my Slackware box, the CyberGuard, and my company's server.
Traffic such as:
Code:
And on the company's server; the following is observed:
Code:
My company just keeps saying "open port 1723 + 47". But as I stated above; I have opened them. And Internet searches have revealed absolutely nothing. At this point; I am completely lost as to what may be wrong.

I opened a thread on the general networking section of the forums to discuss about a problem I am experiencing with a newly installed slackware 13.1 (not 64b) on my dell laptop. Basically, the machine is not getting an IP from the dhcp server on my pfsense router. All other machines on my network are still getting IP's fine, and the pfsense box never changed. I can get an IP from the pfsense box by manually loging as root and using /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 eth0 restart (note the argument eth0 necessary to get the ip).
User markush at the link below suggested I open this thread here, I think its a great idea since I believe it is a slackware problem. he also recommended to use tcpdump to diagnose the connection problem. Here's the results:
I issued the dhcp renewal commands in a terminal and monitored the output of tcpdump in a different terminal.
Code:
root@xpsm1730:/home/lpallard# /etc/rc.d/rc.inet1 restart
Polling for DHCP server on interface eth0:
dhcpcd: version 5.2.2 starting
dhcpcd: eth0: waiting for carrier
dhcpcd: timed out
[Code]....
I believe the router is fine since all other machines are all using slackware 13.1 (one slackware 32bit and the other slackeware 64) and are all handshaking perfectly with the pfsense box.
I also believe the kernel on the faulty machine is OK since I am using the very same kernel(2.6.37) on the machine running slack64 and this machine is also handshaking perfectly with my pfsense box.
Please see http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...get-ip-857683/ for more details.

I've installed Slackware 13.37, it's working well in general There is no xorg.conf file How do I get it to remember my screen resolution? (I'm using a CRT monitor and often adjust the default resolution) Having to change the resolution after each startup is not ideal I tried using my old xorg.conf file from Slack 12.2 with my resolution settings.

When i startx, the resolution of the kde is 1280 - that's awful, for my monitor it needs to be 1152x864, so everytime i startx my slackware i have to go to system settings and set the proper resolution...
What should i do in order to set one resolution-size so it will keep it that until i changed it, and everytime i start the X i will be that type of resolution ?

Can't make Slack 13.1 to run at more than 1024x768. No problems where with 12.0-13.0. Here are portions of my xorg.conf and Xorg.0.log:
Code:
Section "Monitor"
HorizSync 31 - 81
VertRefresh 56 - 75
Section "Device"
[code]....
Note the last line marked (**) - "from config file", but I only have 1280x1024 there ! And what does that mean
(II) NV(0): Using fuzzy aspect match for initial modes
(II) NV(0): Output VGA2 using initial mode 1024x768
(--) NV(0): Virtual size is 1024x1024 (pitch 1024)
And KDE/Display only offers up to 1024x768 too. Didn't try NVIDIA driver yet but 13.0 had no problems with the same monitor, similar Card and nv driver.

I'm gonna tell you about slackware installation on my notebook, an acer travelmate 800lci.
On this notebook, I successfully installed (and work with) slackware from version 10.0 till the recent 13.0. Upgrading to a new version till using a new internal hard disk (from 40 GB to 160 GB). After upgrade I fully reinstall slackware 12.2 and then upgrade to 13.0.
Now, I had to use the notebook for testing, so I made a new full installation of slackware 13.0 and after some time a new full installation of slackware 13.1.
On this disk (160 GB P-ATA) I have to pass the following parameter to the kernel:
during installation and boot.
This operation solve the issue that can "see" the full size of the disk (160 GB) and not the 137 GB limit.
Only using slackware 13.1, occur a big (for me) problem.
I can fully reproduce it opening any pdf document with xpdf: moving into document with arrow keys make the cpu goes to 100% and page "fault/s" goes from 30 to 8000 and some times 15000 "fault/s". So, xpdf becomes unusable. This problem reflects in similar manner to other software, like firefox.
Here is my question: what type of analisys could I try to solve/analyze this issue? Maybe the kernel, xorg?
On slackware 13.0 all works perfectly.
