Slackware :: Which Displays An Image And A Progress Bar

I do not know if all knew, but the BusyBox version used by Slackware 13.X for initrd, has an "application" called /sbin/fbsplash, which displays an image and a progress bar, of course, in the console framebuffer.
An excerpt from the BusyBox code:
Usage:
- use kernel option 'vga=xxx' or otherwise enable framebuffer device.
- put somewhere fbsplash.cfg file and an image in .ppm format.
- run applet: $ setsid fbsplash [params]
I'm having a problem which seems restricted to Fedora. I'm trying to install Fedora 10 on a dual boot system. I have Windows 7 RC installed. When I boot the live CD to run Fedora, my screen ends up displaying Fedora on the left half, and bits of the Windows shut down screen on the right. I cannot access the Fedora menus, they are pushed off to the left out of view.
I previously experienced the same problem with an earlier version of Fedora, with the HD loaded with Ubuntu and Win 7 beta. Fedora would boot but display either the last Ubuntu or last Windows screen to the right, whichever had been running last. No other version of Linux exhibits this behavior that I have found, but my experience is limited. Is there a particular procedure that I need to run to get Fedora to use the entire video display? Does Fedora need to be installed first?
Hardware is: ASUS P5E VM HDMI, using the integrated graphics, display is a 32" LCD TV HDMI input, hard drive is a Samsung 500Gb.
Greetings from Greece. I tried to install opensuse 11.3 in an empty disk . Unfortunately the installation progress stops in 88% and the message error says "error copy live image to the disk". I have burn two different cd but the result is always the same.Is it a hardware problem or the cd is not correct?I had the 11.2 version in the same pc without any problem for a long time.
I've always been under the impression that when using the console only a notebook's display is used. Apparently this is not the case as I just booted off of a SystemRescueCD and the display on the notebook was mirrored on my external HDMI connected monitor. I have a feeling this is set somewhere in the kernel, but where?
I recently upgraded to slackware-current from Slackware 13 via slackroll, and have only encountered one problem. My file manager no longer thumbnails images, and icons (mostly PNG) aren't appearing no matter what GTK theme is set. Running from the command line produces no errors, and when brought up in something else (say feh /path/to/icon.png) it works perfectly. This is the only hitch I have encountered so far. The same thing happens with emoticons in Pidgin. Does anyone know of a fix?
I have download Slackware 13.37 DVD via bit torrent.But it contain several files in addition to ISO image.I try to burn that folder which contain all this files as image.But it detect only the ISO image. Do i need to burn all this files to DVD or if i burn only the ISO image file will it work.Can i burn them in data format to a DVD.
i have a dell laptop with an nvidia card (proprietary drivers from sbo) running 13.1. all of a sudden a random image from firefox would 'stick' on the display and it would be visible on other applications. for example, a yellow rectangle would appear wherever you go with firefox (on top of every page), on top of word documents (ms word is running under crossover), but it would not be visible on the kde desktop of dolphin.

To make a very low level backup of my laptop prior to upgrading it, I decided to create an iso of the harddisk; while it is doing this, but a bit too far to just cancel and start anew, so I cannot test it out right now I decided to post here.
of course, there are partitions on /dev/sda (there's a swap for example)I may (am pretty damn sure I will) want to access the files within the iso, and that's where I wonder how to tackle that; I'm thinking along the lines of setting up a loopback device (losetup) but I don't think that that will be enough to recognize the partitions. Any thoughts? (or just re-create an image of /dev/sda1 ?)
I want to use a different bmp image in Lilo when the system boots up. What I want to know is how do I get this new image to confirm to the specs as detailed in liloconfig. Or are these specifications only a guideline?
I installed in my Slackware 13.1 with generic kernel 2.6.33.4-smp VirtualBox packages taken from SlackBuilds.org (acpica, virtualbox-ose and virtualbox-kernel). Then for testing purposes I installed in VirtualBox Windows XP using CD-ROM drive connected to USB port. It's a lot of fun to see Windows as an application in Linux!
Now I'm trying to install in VirtualBox Linux Mint using either USB flash drive prepared with unetbootin or mere ISO image. Without success. It seems VirtualBox 3.2.10 OSE doesn't recognize either USB flash drives or ISO images though it recognizes CD-ROM drive connected to USB port. I found some advices searching Internet but all of them are useless.
I've been tring to burn an iso image to a DVDRW using K3B and the progress has been setting a 99% for almost an hour. the iso image is only 2GIGS. why is it taking so long?
I downloaded slackware disk 1 to 3 via torrent.Now I have 3 nice .rar files which I have uncompressed, and these two accompanying each:slackware-13.1-install.iso.ascslackware-13.1-install.iso.md5I'm running Windows XP, and have nero.The two above files appear to be image files but nero doesn't think so, and I can neither find any other image file to make my install boot cd.I read the other stickied forum topic "So you wan to be a slacker..." which seems to say I should be on the look out for these files:
Im using FF 3.5.2 and Slackware 12.2. On certain web pages, for instance www.slackware.com, Firefox doesnt display the background image, but instead displays multiple images of the tool bar of Firefox. It doesnt matter if I change the settings to allow third part cookies or if I tell Firefox to get images automatically. When using Konqueror, the web-site(s) appear normal.
i am trying to create an image of Slackware OS but vmware is not able to detect the disk. it gives me below error, "Unable to detect disks or volumes on the source machine. Make sure that the source is a supported linux distribution." can some one tell me what do i need to do to create the image.
In light of my previous achievement in wireless networking, I've decided to create a larger issue for myself to solve. Which hopefully I can get some help with. Because my system is totally kisspoped up, for those of you who get what that means. I was trying to install GRUB via the .txz package and it created a mirrored image of the /boot folder. Which for some reason contained the / folder. Which in turn held /boot and all the other folders / is expected to contain.
Now, trying to remove the extra /boot folder proved difficult, but once I finally was able to figure it out, I remembered I could removepkg and that would probably mend the situation. However, I was already 20-something percent through moving the files to trash. Now when I checked /, /boot was gone from there. Along with various other folders. SO! Apparently the /tmp/boot folder created was in reality the /boot folder, albeit in the wrong place and having the wrong contents. Somehow, one folder existed as two different versions of itself at the same point in time. Much as a Time Lord might. Deleting one made the other vanish with it.
Good news:I removed it via Thunar and it should be in the root user's trash /home and some other folders had yet to be trashed when I hit cancel, so I can still use some things Bad news:I never ran X as root, so I don't know if it HAS a trash folder I can only use things already started up because the binaries are gone, but the configuration files in /home are still there (although /usr/bin remains)
Ideally, there would be a big UNDO button somewhere in this long row of function keys. Reasonably, there should be some kind of restoration tool. Realistically, I think I'm going to have to reinstall the system, which wasn't easy in the first place due to my faulty disc bay which detects discs at will.
Since slackware 13.0 (upgraded to 13.1), I haven't been able to print anything. I can add printers no problem using the cups gui (or whatever). However any print I send to any printer fails because of:
"Unable to open image file for printing!"
I can post the whole error log if that helps, but I can't see much in it. I haven't been able to print for about 6 months, which is getting a bit annoying.
p.s, as a I lazy option I upgraded to the cups in -current, but that didn't help (although I don't think it was a very different version).

I'm wondering how to show progress of a cp or mv command. The man page says -v should do it, but it seems it doesn't show any progress at all. Is it possible to show progress info with cp or mv? Or, is there a different command I could use that would show a progress bar. I know for example scp will show a progress bar, but that is for local-->remote or visa versa, but I'm trying to copy locally.
Where is the progress bar in the new Firefox, or can it be got back if Mozilla removed it? If you have Mobile Broadband or dial-up this is a handy thing if you start looking at your watch waiting for a page to load...
I want to create a script which will show the amount of data that is been copied from one location to another location. For example: Say I have a file called abc.img which is approximately 4 gb of size therefore every time I copy the file from one location to another I want a progress bar to appear like 50% completed 51% completed and so on.
Well, I've made progress in getting my recording to work.I was running a piece of software called liveice, and this used to work, but now with the current versions of of Fedora I just get noise and other strange problems. I stopped using liveice, and switched to darkice, and now my recordings are working without noise. I hear correct sound and the volume controls are acting sensible.Liveice was broken in a very weird way.The recording meter worked correctly, but the audio it actually recorded was just noise.This program uses OSS, as does darkice.When I record on the SB live, which is dsp2,sometimes I hear sound on it from the other sound card? Is that weird? Why would the input from the sound cards come in mixed like this?I have two sound cards, /dev/dsp and /dev/dsp1. One shows as ICH5/AD1985, and the other is an SB Live 5.1.I currently have Pulseaudio installed and running. I did a yum update just now.This is all with Fedora 12.This system was upgraded from 10 to 11.And then again from 11 to 12.
I recently did a kernel update usingCode:yum -y updateAfter update while booting progress reaches till the end and it stops there, it doesn't progress. If I use earlier kernel for booting I do not have any issues.
I'm SSHing to a headless Ubuntu box and sometimes need to upload files from that box via FTP. The built-in FTP client does not show the progress of my upload (or at least I don't know how to view it). I just see this during the operation (which could take up to an hour):150 Opening BINARY mode dataonnection for MyFileAre there any FTP clients which I could use in terminal and would show the progress (some kind of a progress bar or just the percentage)?
