Slackware :: Can Use Synaptic And Slapt-get

Apr 17, 2010

I'm sitting at work and wondering if Synaptic package manager could be used with slapt-get on Slackware since it's based on apt-get anyway. I haven't researched this, but I wonder if anyone out there has. I'm thinking that Synaptic looks for .deb packages but it would be interesting if one could make it work. The Gslapt/slapt-get combo works just fine for me as far as a GUI alternative, but apparently only works with .tgz or .txz. Or does it?

It would be interesting if one could install .deb packages because it would open up a whole lot repositories to Slackware including the Ubuntu repos. Don't get me wrong, I like compiling from source but nothing drives me crazier than finding some piece of software I like that ends up needing a million Gnome dependencies. I can definitely appreciate the reasons why Gnome was dropped from Slackware!

Slackware :: Unsafe To Upgrade The Kernel With Slapt-get?

Jan 29, 2010

I noticed that slapt-get excludes a lot of package titles based on aaa, glibc, and kernel. I've been wondering why, and haven't been able to find any definitive answers... Anyone here have any ideas on why that is? My Slackware installation is currently kernel 2.6.29.6 (I think) and the newest available on the official repositories is 2.6.32.5 (or something like that).

When I put in slapt-get --upgrade it spits out about 15 packages that are excluded that it won't upgrade. Now, I know I can remove the exclusions by editing the slapt-get configuration file, but I don't want to if it's going to screw something up. So my question is: Is there a reason those are excluded? Is it unsafe to upgrade the kernel with slapt-get?

Slackware :: Slapt-get Error On First Run - Cannot Open Shared Object File: No Such File Or Directory

May 22, 2011

I get an error when running slapt-get. The error is: "slapt-get: error while loading shared libraries: libsas.so.2: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory".

I've booted the Slackware disk # 1 and unchecked everything except the libraries category and installed them. I rebooted and it still says this. I get this same error before I put the disk in and rebooted to install ALL libraries. I really need help. BTW, I can't load KDE.I found a pkg manager already installed called "slackpkg". But I really need help on this library issue!! I uninstalled it (slapt-get) anyway, so forget that!

Fedora :: Add/remove Programs Won't Find Sources?

Aug 21, 2010

I just installed Fedora 13 today, everything is working including the internet. However, when I try to get more programs it says that it cannot find the sources, and a cache reload will fix it. I wasn't sure at first what that ment, being a begginer, but I think it means going into system-refresh package lists. So I do that,ut it still wont give me the program list. I'm really confused, I come from using windows computers and I don't know what to do now, me be a little clearer, when I click on one of the catagores to find software, nothing comes up but the defalt packages that come with the system. I go into the system-Software menu, and there are no boxes cheked. I thought that this maybe to problem, so I try to cheak the top box labled without parentheses "Fedora 13 - 1386". It tells me to authenticate my action and tells me to type the root password, I do this. Then it shows the screen below. I'm running a 32 bit system,

Slackware :: Using Src2pkg To Build Svn Sources

May 25, 2010

What's the best way to use src2pkg to build sources checked out from svn?

Src2pkg expects a source tarball. But when you check out or export a program's code from svn you don't get a tarball. You just get a source directory.

Do I tar and gzip the directory? Or is there a way to skip that step?

Debian :: Unable To Edit The Sources.list?

Sep 7, 2011

I started using Ubuntu about 2 months ago, and having been studying every day since. About 2 days ago, I downloaded a copy of i386 Squeeze, and installed it onto an old extra machine (Dell 2350 tower, 768 MB RAM, 30 GB HD, Ethernet broadband) as a learning project.

During the install, I chose to not specify an online mirror. (I was trying to keep things as simple as possible, and save time while I was at it.) I didn't realize that by not specifying a mirror, the new system wouldn't have any links for finding new software. (In Ubuntu, it was automated and required no input &/or editing from me.) Reading posts at this forum, I learned that I need to edit the sources.list file. This was my first attempt at editing a Linux system script file, and I wasn't able to manage doing that. I chose to open it using gedit, and found I couldn't change its contents. I figured out then, that it was read-only.

Slackware :: Nvidia Driver Package Refuse To Cooperate With Kernel Sources?

Aug 3, 2010

I'm using Slackware 13.0 on rather old PC with old Riva TNT2 video card. Default driver is "nv". Everything work fine, but without hardware 2D acceleration under X.

After studying various manuals I
1. downloaded Nvidia binary package suitable for my video card.
2. Recompile kernel without Riva framebuffer support.
3. Start Nvidia script.

Script said: "Error: unable to find the kernel source tree for the currently running kernel. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured...""

Kernel sources are in /usr/src/linux-2.6.29.6 I have all kernel packages installed. I was trying various switches for script in order to show the right path - nothing! 8 Some people say that Nvidia script don't like 4th digit in a kernel's name and get it from "uname -r" output. Can I change it somehow?

Ubuntu Installation :: Can't Update Http://ppa.launchpad.net Natty/main/Sources Sources

May 16, 2011

I've got the following problem: I just noticed that there were just very few notifications about updating the system (usually there are damn many of them in a week) So I opened the update manager and clicked on "refresh list". The following result popped up: p,li{white-space:pre-wrap;}E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found First I thought, it would be just some kind of server problem, but it didn't stop. The next thing was to research the thread and I even found something. However, the solution suggested didn't work at all. (Things, which might have caused this: I installed the default software center |I'm using Kubuntu, but in this case that fact doesn't matter| and used it. To sum up:

- not able to update the system referring to the launchpad main sources for 11.04
- following error: E: Error http://ppa.launchpad.net natty/main/Sources Sources 404 Not Found It would be great if this was a common issue and I've been simply too stupid to find a proper solution. So you could just post the link.

Ubuntu Installation :: Change The Sources That Aren't In Sources.list?

Apr 21, 2010

I am running Jolicloud on my netbook (which I believe is an Ubuntu derivative) and I am tried to enter the getdeb.net sources in so I can install apps from the website through APT but

1) When I entered the sources into sources.list and then the key into Terminal and then went to the site and tried to install an app it didn't work.

2) I deleted the line of code in the sources.list file and when I opened terminal and entered "sudo apt-get update" it showed the list of sources, but on the list were Getdeb.net sources.

My question is how do I delete sources that aren't in /etc/apt/sources.list ?

Hardware :: ERROR: Unable To Determine The Version Of The Kernel Sources Located In '/lib/modules/2.6.35

Jan 11, 2011

I have installed Arch Linux quite a few weeks ago; but I'm still trying my best to install the nividia display driver for my graphics card (nVidia Geforce 2 MX 400). Not only in Arch but have tried installing on other distros and still failed. I have read up all the documentations and I still find it hard to do this task. When I used the terminal and executed the NVIDIA-Linux-x86-94.43.01-pkg1.run file without any window manager running, I get this problem:

ERROR: Unable to determine the version of the kernel sources located in '/lib/modules/2.6.35-ARCH/build'. Please make sure you have installed the kernel source files for your kernel and that they are properly configured; on Red Hat Linux systems, for example, be sure you have the 'kernel-source' or 'kernel-devel' RPM installed. If you know the correct kernel source files are installed, you may specify the kernel source path with the '--kernel-source-path' command line option.

ERROR: Installation has failed. Please see the file '/var/log/nvidia-installer.log' for details. You may find suggestions on fixing installation problems in the README available on the Linux driver download page at nvidia.com.

Now I'm using Arch Linux Kernel 2.6.35 and I have got the source. But where am I suppose to put it now? I do not want to change the kernel. I just want the nVidia installer to identify that there is a kernel source so that it can install. I have searched up a lot on websites and ended up with no proper guide.

This is a very old driver. So since now I have the nVidia driver installation package and also the kernel source,
