Slackware :: No Accentuated Chars Ssh - Screen - Irssi
Oct 5, 2010
I use Slackware 13.1 32 bits in my eeepc and I have only Xfce installed on in it (didn't install KDE). So I use Xfce on it. On my other machines when I'm using irssi on konsole I don't have any problems with latin chars (accentuated) but when I'm using Terminal on Xfce i have it. In irssi or in terminal? How can I put it right? I use Portuguese layout keyboard. I already see that is in irssi at terminal on Xfce. But I have "/set term_charset UTF-8".

With the latest Freenode changes SSL connection is now possible which presents no problem, particularly with rworkman's ca-certificates slackbuild, But configuring sasl for the password to nickserv presents a bit more of a challenge as 3 perl modules are required: Crypt::OpenSSL::Bignum, Crypt::DH, Crypt::Blowfish and Math::BigInt. I have not packaged perl modules for slackware before and I guess there is always a first time but can I ask if anybody has already neatly packaged up the required perl modules? I suspect they will be very popular with Freenode slackware irc users...

I've been trying to get this working for a while. On a remote server I'm running irssi in a screen session to keep my IRC client connected 24/7. I SSH to that server and reattach the screen session. irssi is able to send alerts when certain highlight words are mentioned (e.g. my nick). I would like gnome-terminal to flash in the taskbar when that happens. I was able to get this working with Putty on Windows, but I can't figure out how to get that working with gnome-terminal. Is it at all possible? The "Terminal bell" setting in the gnome-terminal profile doesn't seem to change anything.

I'm using 10.04, and gnome-terminal GNOME Terminal 2.30.2 . I have irssi running on screen session on remote host. And I've been struggling for quite many days to configure it to produce either visual feedback or ring terminal's bell when I receive a private message or one of those that are highlighted.
My compiz settings window in General tab has 'Audible bell' checked.
My GNOME terminal has 'Terminal bell' checked.
I also added 'set bell-style audible' to my ~/.inputrc
And I also tried to manually load pcspkr module into my kernel.
No of the above helped or at least I haven't been able to notice any difference.
I also used some commands for irssi to produce bell sign.

why irssi won't connect to freenode (I am in the process of configuring it and username has been set).
Code:
15:09 -!- Irssi: Looking up irc.freenode.net
15:09 -!- Irssi: Connecting to irc.freenode.net [xx.xx.xx.xx.] port 6667
15:12 -!- Irssi: Unable to connect server irc.freenode.net port 6667
[Connection timed out]
My network connection seems fine. I have not any issues at all with ethernet/wireless so I am not sure what is causing this. Irssi worked fine on fedora before switching to arch.

When trying to connect to an irc server in irssi, I get the following error: root Erroneous Nickname: Reserved for services. I don't know how to change the nickname before the connection is established. I'm currently connected to one server, where I have my proper nick, but when trying to connect to another server with connect [URL], which should open another connection, it's trying with the nickname root.

I want to use bitlbee-irssi to IM using gtalk.. I have installed bitlbee and edited /etc/bitlbee/bitlbee.conf with
RunMode = ForkDaemon
User = bitlbee
DaemonInterface = 127.0.0.1
DaemonPort = 6667
Now when I try to connect to the localhost at port 6667 using irssi, i get the following error message saying it cannot connect to localhost port 6667
13:48 -!- Irssi: Looking up localhost
13:48 -!- Irssi: Connecting to localhost [127.0.0.1] port 6667
13:48 -!- Irssi: Connection to localhost established
13:48 -!- Error: bind: Permission denied
13:48 -!- Error: listen: Bad file descriptor
13:48 -!- Irssi: Connection lost to localhost
A similar looking error comes up when I try to telnet localhost at 6667. Also, I get a selinux warning saying SELinux is preventing /usr/sbin/bitlbee "name_bind" access .How do I check if bitlbee is listening to port 6667? Btw, I am using fedora 13, I have selinux running in enforcing mode and the firewall running. I have set the port 6667 in the other ports tab of "system-config-firewall" (I am hoping that this will open that port).

I've changed the terminal colors and now irssi statusbars have white text on light blue background. I would like to change the foreground color of the irssi statusbars to black but can't figure out how to do it. I don't want to download a whole theme, I only want to change this one color.

I am trying to configure irssi to work correctly after having used XChat for quite some time. When I try to join #fedora on Freenode, however, I am unable to identify my username (which worked fine in XChat). Subsequently, I automatically join #fedora-unregistered (see http://pastebin.com/XUcx7CLe). I have edited the contents of the ~/.irssi/config file using /COMMAND in the irssi client (see http://pastebin.com/zV7NZYKG). I think these are the most relevant parts of the configuration file where the problem must lie.
Code:
{
address = "irc.freenode.net";
chatnet = "Freenode";
port = "6667";
use_ssl = "no";
ssl_verify = "no";
autoconnect = "yes";

I've searched the forums and the google looking for a means to do this and haven't found anything I can use. I have a large file that looks like this:
Code:
18000034161828M850
18000034172676M850
98 093095
[code]...
I need to add spaces at the end of each line to ensure that every line has 80 chars before the carriage return. I was thinking something like this, but it doesn't do the right thing:
Code:
cat filename | sed -e 's/$/(bunch of spaces)/' | cut -c1-80 > filename2
I'm on fedora, so I can use awk, sed, bash, ksh, etc.

After nhandlers IRC session on ubuntu user days, I got inspired to check out irssi. One thing that I am having trouble with is getting irssi to play an alert sound of some sort when my nick is highlighted. I've tried this:
"/set beep_when_window_active ON"
"/set beep_when_away ON"
"/set beep_msg_level MSGS NOTICES DCC DCCMSGS HILIGHT"
"/set bell_beeps ON"
So I believe that I should get some kind of beep sound but I'm not. I'm running irssi on byobu and using Karmic Koala. Please, I welcome all of your advice about irssi even if it is not "on topic"

Years ago on AIX I used to create a file of key strokes, including function keys (mainly F3 and F12) into a file, and used that file as input to an INFORMIX program, to automated tasks, something like this:
fglgo myprogram.fgo <keystrokefile.txt
Now, I'm using Aubit language on GNU/Linux, and I'd like to do the same kind of thing, but I can't recall how I worked out the chars for the function keys, I'm using a different emulation (xterm), and I can't work out what characters to put in the key stroke file. My $TERM variable contains "xterm". If I type "infocmp", I get this:
Code:
# Reconstructed via infocmp from file: /usr/share/terminfo/x/xterm
xterm|xterm terminal emulator (X Window System),
am, bce, km, mc5i, mir, msgr, npc, xenl,
colors#8, cols#80, it#8, lines#24, pairs#64,
acsc=``aaffggiijjkkllmmnnooppqqrrssttuuvvwwxxyyzz{{||}}~~,
[Code]....
1. Is the above infocmp output the place I should get the information I need?
2. What chars do I need to put into my file to simulate me pressing F3 and F12?
3. Is there a way for me to put such chars in a file by just pressing those function keys (I tried a here document, but that doesn't work (it's as if the function keys are not even pressed)).

I have an application where the client is written in Visual Studio (C#), run on PCs, and the server end has traditionally been SCO. We're now migrating to Linux. I can, for example, input "Test This" in a text box on the client, and when the server end is SCO, it is able to 'accept' the character sent to it from the client. When I try this same example on Linux, that character (hex D1) does not 'make it' from the client to the server.
The problem is not on the client, and I have verified that the telnet connection is in fact passing these extended characters, but they are not recognized properly by the Linux server.In researching this, I've played with setting the LANG environmental variable from LANG=en_US.UTF-8 to several of the other possible values found in /usr/lib/locale, for a european locale (the end user is actually in Spain), and these 'euro' characters are still not handled properly in my application.Would anyone be able to point me to any specific env variable settings, and/or anything else that would resolve this issue?

Suppose I'm editing a file with vim. The file, a text file, contains line terninators which are line feeds (LF= 0x0a). It could also contain horizontal tabs (HT= 0x09) and some more non-printable chars (in fact, it could be corrupt and contain anything). Will vim let me see the location within the text of those chars (chars = characters) and what each of them is? I know there are such things as hexdump and the like but it would be nice for me to stay within the vim session.

Right now I'm getting little boxes with hexcode instead of text-critical marks in my Greek texts that have been marked up. Also, I can't get xml to display in my firefox browser. What am I missing? Shouldn't Firefox parse xml and display something like an html page?

For some reason it seems like my Thunderbird 3.x has a limit of 80 chars per line enabled, so when I edit a message, it puts a line feed on or before that limit.
I think it could be set when I installed Enigmail for using GPG, that changes some default values, but I'm not sure.
Anyway I would like to avoid this issue, so I can write lines as long as I want, but I've not found a configuration option to do this within "Preferences" dialog.

I wrote a bash-script that splits each of many .sql-files into two parts by some condition using head utlity. After that I execute all the scripts in sqlplus, and in one or two of them I get an error: SP2-0042: unknown command ")" - rest of line ignored. If I open the file with vi, I can see that in the end of each line there's a "^M", which is treated as a single character. If I delete this character placed before the closing parenthesis, the scripts executes without any errors. In the initial script opened by vi there's no such characters. Is it a problem with the head utility or with something else? Of course, I cannot grep these special chars.

When want to backup my DB like "mysqldump -h localhost-u root -p dbname > dbname.sql" the special characters are lost, they are not correctly stored nor displayed in the sql file. This means there is no possible restoration.

I have been using slackware since version 10.1 and really like it. I have never had a problem until lately, version 13.1 has been stable as a rock for me. The first 2 or 3 updates to current ran well but then the problem started. After installation Slackware would get to the splash screen and bring up the first picture of a disk drive then just hang and never go any further. I do have a good burn on the dvd, have checked the md5 and burned at 4x. then slack 13.37 does the same thing. this is on 4 different computers with several different video boards.

I just went out and bought a 19" flat screen LCD monitor. Plugged it in and it is not working correctly. When I start the computer the bios info will show up on the screen, then it goes to the screen that let's you choose an O/S if you were to dual boot. After clicking "enter" it will show the first line of the boot then it goes off into horizontal colors then goes black. I have search many different posts and googled but nothing is giving me a hint at this.I changed the xorg.conf to match the refresh rates to match the monitor but that did not work, and did not really think it would considering the point this monitor goes out on me. running: 2.6.27.7-smp 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller:

I am accessing a firewire camera using the libdc1394 library and saving the image as a PPM file, using the code below:
[Code].....
My question is whether the above code is portable. I presume it is, since the result is a binary PPM file which should be capable of being read across multiple computers with different architectures and different operating systems. But at the same time, all that the above code is doing is just saving the binary representation of unsigned chars on the harddrive, and there does not seem to be any reason why the binary representations of the unsigned chars will be identical across multiple computers.

What happens is that I resorted to deleting my .kde directory after my kid destroyed my profile where title bar, menu, konsole get broken. After deleting, I login again thus regenerating the .kde directory. To avoid my kid from messing my desktop, I tried to lock it. It does not lock.
It just need a KDE full restart perhaps since when I login the other day, it now works.
I'm updated to Slackware current for almost a month already and have not played a lot on KDE desktop (busy programming stuff).
However, on day I tried to lock the desktop in KDE to avoid the kid from destroying my cool desktop setting, but it didn't lock. Cool, so I tried screen saver and add an option to lock the screen.
When I test screen saver, it displays. But when I wait for 1 minute(I set it that way), it doesn't fire up. Not even after 15 minutes which I think the default.
It usually work before (several months ago) using the lower version of KDE. It is just last Saturday that I noticed it.
I tried to dig the profile management but I could not find anything relevant there.
