Server :: Mysqldump: Special Chars Are Not Correctly Saved?

Feb 18, 2011

I have some tables that contain special characters from different languages like German, Italian, Russian, Spanish etc. They are stored and displayed correctly.

When want to backup my DB like "mysqldump -h localhost-u root -p dbname > dbname.sql" the special characters are lost, they are not correctly stored nor displayed in the sql file. This means there is no possible restoration.

General :: Where Are Special Key Mapping Saved

Aug 12, 2010

I've found several how-to's, but the "problem" is that all the ones I've found up to now involve using xmodmap. I'm not radically opposed to that, but, with debian, for some reason, I don't need it. I don't have a Xmodmap file, and yet, the special keys have their "names", instead of NoSymbol (on xev). Anyone knows where the settings are, whenever one does not use xmodmap?To make things weirder I've tried to create a Xmodmap to use with arch from debian, but it get the names all wrong, for some reason. (I used xmodmap -pke > .Xmodmap). I guess that whatever debian does, it has nothing to do with xmodmap then.

But I think it may not be possible. Besides not using xmodmap, on debian I have the correct keyboard layout set without having any command (well, at least not on my openbox startup script... it could be somewhere along all those "deeper" startup scripts, on /etc/rc.#/, I guess... I'm going to check there now), while on arch I have a "setxkbmap" on my openbox startup script.

Server :: Copying /var/lib/mysql Instead Of Mysqldump?

Jan 20, 2011

I have one doubt, is copying /var/lib/mysql is a good alterntive to mysqldump?.

Because i use rsync to copy /var/lib/mysql for back up without dumping the database. I use rsync to do differential backup up so that it copies /var/lib/mysql to /var/tmp every one minute.

Server :: Locks Table During Mysqldump?

Dec 7, 2010

We are running an adserver with mysql as the database. We backup the database every hour and lately noticed that ads doesn't get delivered at the time of backup. The database size is 1.2 GB in which a single table ifself is 1.1 GB. Googling around the problem says this may be due to lock table feature in mysqldump and disabling it might solve the issue but i'm afraid whether this would be a problem. Can anyone please explain what lock table means and will it be a problem if i disable it or may be any other alternative solutions/assitance (other than master/slave or replication since we cannot afford it at this time) would be really helpful.

Rebooting doesn't do anything.

Server :: Top Doesn't Load Saved Config

Aug 5, 2010

I've been building up my second gentoo system, and I've found a strange issue with top. Basically I'll load it up, configure it how I want it, sorted by CPU, set the colours etc then I'll save the config via 'W'. On my old system when I quit out and load top, it automatically loads up my settings from the ~/.toprc file - I dont recall setting this up at all, but maybe I have and just dont rememmber.Eitherway, on my new system it just ignores my toprc file. I can't see anything in the settings to choose a default file to load, and so am a bit confused by this issue.

OpenSUSE Network :: User's Home Directory Saved In Samba Server Not Locally

Mar 27, 2011

Continuing with my assigned task of migrating the company's PCs to GNU/Linux (openSUSE as server for GNU/Linux clients) I managed to set up a DC with roaming profiles for the few remaining Windows users, user validation and login for the openSUSE boxes and a few network shares with different rights. I know there are no roaming profiles for GNU/Linux and I can live with that but I would like to specify wich users/groups would have their home directories saved locally (notebook users) and which will save them on the Samba server.

By default home directories are saved locally but somehow Samba creates a minimal home directory for each user under /home in the Samba server. How can I tell the client box to use that directory? and how can I set up the few notebook users to save it on their disks? Maybe using the options under Yast > Security... > Users and groups management > Users (LDAP Users filter) > and then select the user and use the "Manage Samba account parameters" plug-in for specifying the different paths cant achieve this.

General :: How To Use The Mysqldump

Aug 2, 2010

I have a LAMP website with mysql backend with InnoDb engine for tables.I would like to be able to use mysqldump to take periodic dumps of the database - WITHOUT having to stop the mysql server (i.e. shutting down the website) for the duration of the backup. not even in the mySQL documentation. A lot of mention is made about mysqlhotcopy, but that only works for IMSAM tables - and is therefore of no interest/use to me.Does anyone know if (how?) I can use mysqldump to take a copy/dump of a database that is still being used?.A link to the official documentation would be very useful, since I want to make sure that I get this absolutely right.I am running on Ubuntu 10.0.4 LTS

Programming :: Pad End Of Each Line With Spaces To = 80 Chars?

Apr 14, 2011

I've searched the forums and the google looking for a means to do this and haven't found anything I can use. I have a large file that looks like this:

Code:

18000034161828M850
18000034172676M850
98 093095

[code]...

I need to add spaces at the end of each line to ensure that every line has 80 chars before the carriage return. I was thinking something like this, but it doesn't do the right thing:

Code:

cat filename | sed -e 's/$/(bunch of spaces)/' | cut -c1-80 > filename2

I'm on fedora, so I can use awk, sed, bash, ksh, etc.

Software :: MySQLdump Reported Completed But Wrong Time Shown

Jan 14, 2010

I just backup my mysql db using mysqldump. I run it around 6pm of the evening but I just notice that on the last part of the dump file, it says "Dump completed on 2010-01-14 11:30:01". The time is "Jan 14 19:30" when I run mysqldump. Though the content is corrent, I still want to know why the dump reported it was completed but wrong time. I don't have my.cnf on my /etc so it means all was default by mysql. If I'm not mistaken, timezone by default in mysql is gmt.

My /etc/sysconfig/clock is
ZONE="Asia/Manila"
UTC=true
ARC=false

When I do "select now();" on mysql shell, it was the same with my system. I want to prove my backup was right but this thing confuse me a bit.

General :: Putting Function Key Chars In A File?

Sep 18, 2010

Years ago on AIX I used to create a file of key strokes, including function keys (mainly F3 and F12) into a file, and used that file as input to an INFORMIX program, to automated tasks, something like this:
fglgo myprogram.fgo <keystrokefile.txt

Now, I'm using Aubit language on GNU/Linux, and I'd like to do the same kind of thing, but I can't recall how I worked out the chars for the function keys, I'm using a different emulation (xterm), and I can't work out what characters to put in the key stroke file. My $TERM variable contains "xterm". If I type "infocmp", I get this:

Code:
# Reconstructed via infocmp from file: /usr/share/terminfo/x/xterm
xterm|xterm terminal emulator (X Window System),
am, bce, km, mc5i, mir, msgr, npc, xenl,
colors#8, cols#80, it#8, lines#24, pairs#64,
acsc=``aaffggiijjkkllmmnnooppqqrrssttuuvvwwxxyyzz{{||}}~~,

[Code]....

1. Is the above infocmp output the place I should get the information I need?

2. What chars do I need to put into my file to simulate me pressing F3 and F12?

3. Is there a way for me to put such chars in a file by just pressing those function keys (I tried a here document, but that doesn't work (it's as if the function keys are not even pressed)).

General :: Getting Extended Ascii (chars > 127) To Work

Mar 4, 2011

I have an application where the client is written in Visual Studio (C#), run on PCs, and the server end has traditionally been SCO. We're now migrating to Linux. I can, for example, input "Test This" in a text box on the client, and when the server end is SCO, it is able to 'accept' the character sent to it from the client. When I try this same example on Linux, that character (hex D1) does not 'make it' from the client to the server.

The problem is not on the client, and I have verified that the telnet connection is in fact passing these extended characters, but they are not recognized properly by the Linux server.In researching this, I've played with setting the LANG environmental variable from LANG=en_US.UTF-8 to several of the other possible values found in /usr/lib/locale, for a european locale (the end user is actually in Spain), and these 'euro' characters are still not handled properly in my application.Would anyone be able to point me to any specific env variable settings, and/or anything else that would resolve this issue?

General :: Vim: Command To Show All Non-printable Chars?

Suppose I'm editing a file with vim. The file, a text file, contains line terninators which are line feeds (LF= 0x0a). It could also contain horizontal tabs (HT= 0x09) and some more non-printable chars (in fact, it could be corrupt and contain anything). Will vim let me see the location within the text of those chars (chars = characters) and what each of them is? I know there are such things as hexdump and the like but it would be nice for me to stay within the vim session.
