Fedora Servers :: Backing-store Does Not Get Added

Jul 22, 2011

I just started playing with iscsi and have some issues.

This below works great (I can connect to this new device from my clients):

Code:
tgtadm --lld iscsi --op new --mode target --tid 1 -T iqn.2011-07.home.joma:jomamgmt01.data
tgtadm --lld iscsi --op new --mode logicalunit --tid 1 --lun 1 -b /dev/sdb
tgtadm --lld iscsi --op bind --mode target --tid 1 -I ALL

[Code].....

The backing-store does not get added.

OpenSUSE Hardware :: X11 Backing Store Under Suse 11.3

Dec 14, 2010

I have just installed a new 11.3 machine which should replace my old one with suse 9.2.

I have some X11 applications which require backing store support. Under 9.2 I added Option "BackingStore" "True" to section "Device" in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.

With 11.3 the arrangement of the X server has changed. I added Option "BackingStore" "True" to file 50-device.conf in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d. This was enough to activate backing store when a window is partially obscured by another window, but the content of the window is lost : (1) when the window is iconized; (2) when the window is moved to another desktop (I am using fvwm). It is not lost when it is moved to another page in same desktop.

Are there any other options to obtain a backing store working as it used to do in 9.2 (window content was always preserved).

Fedora Servers :: Set Up A System For Backing Up Files?

Nov 17, 2009

I would like to set up a system for backing up files and even possibly using it to keep music on and listen to it over the network. I am wondering which would be better to use a separate FTP server or buy one of the NAS enclosures and a couple of hard drives to put in it. I am assuming that the NAS would be accessed via NFS. I have never run an FTP server and I have never had used NAS.I am just looking for pros and cons to each one. I would just like opinions as to which service (FTP/NFS) would be better for this task.

Ubuntu Servers :: Backing Up Server Before Updating?

Feb 27, 2010

I've been running my little server at home for a few months now, and I've noticed that Webmin has detected that I'm in need of over 100 updates. I'm a bit scared to run the updates because everything is working just fine right now, but a part of me still wants to run some of the updates. Now I know backing up the server would be a good idea to do before this happens. This server is a media server with videos, music and pictures taking up the majority of the hard drive space on the server. I just have one partition on the server, outside of the swap partition. I would like to back up everything on the server except the videos, music, and pictures, because if even an update messes with the server, I could always retrieve those, and the external hard drive I'm going to back up to wont be big enough to hold everything anyways.

if I were to backup up everything except for those directories that hold my videos, music, and pictures, and something were to go wrong, if I were to restore all of those, would I then be back to the state my system was at when I backed up? I've never done a back up and restore in a linux environment before. I just want to make sure that just doing that will be enough, because the last thing I want to do is hose my server after taking several weeks to get it to the working state that its at.

Ubuntu Servers :: Backing Up Directories On Old Server?

May 18, 2010

have had a server running for a very long time using Ubuntu Server 7.10, and I think it's passed time that I upgraded.I'll be installing fresh, and I've already backed up /var/www (as well as a home directory with a few files)I've only used this as a Web / SFTP / file server. Might there be any other directories that would be good to backup? I set it up so long ago and have made a few changes along the way.

Ubuntu Servers :: Backing Up A Server To An External Drive?

Jul 17, 2010

I have an Ubuntu server running Lucid. I'd like to be able to back up the hard drive in the server to an external hard drive. I try to plug in a drive via a USB port and it doesn't appear to mount automatically, as it does on the desktop version. Questions: 1) What/where should I be looking for to see if the drive is mounted? (I've looked in /dev and /media; no dice.) 2) What's the mount command I should use to manually mount the external hard drive? 3) What backup commands or programs, other than rsync, are recommended? (Nothing against rsync.)

Ubuntu Servers :: No Boot Up With Added Lines To Fstab

May 11, 2010

I recently formatted my HDD and installed Ubuntu Server 10.04 x64. This is actually the 4th install in the past week because I was testing some things. But I had this problem on at least the previous install which made me want to start fresh again. The problem I'm having is Ubuntu will not boot if I add any of my drives to fstab. If I leave it with the standard proc, /, and swap lines it works fine. As soon as I add a line for one of my RAID arrays or an NTFS formatted partition the system hangs on bootup. It doesn't matter if I have the extra drives operating or not.

The last thing I see before it hangs is:
Code:
/dev/sda1: clean, 69351/4358144 files, 583945/17401600 blocks
Here is what the fstab currently looks like:

Code:
proc /proc proc nodev,noexec,nosuid 0 0
UUID=c62ac627-46a6-4fd5-87e8-4ae0d9185d53 / ext4 errors=remount-ro 0 1
UUID=c1cee1e4-f8ac-4555-a88b-f237afdedd27 none swap sw 0 0
/dev/md0 /mnt/raid5 ext4 defaults 0 0

The other two lines which also made it hang included one which was almost exactly the same as the /dev/md0 line except it was md1 with a different mount point and another which used a UUID and was ntfs-3g. I know they work because all 3 of them were mounted by "mount -a" after putting them into fstab and they're pretty much the same as what I was using with 9.04 server.

General :: Where Does ITunes Store Its Stuff - Copy Its Data Store To An External Drive

Dec 8, 2009

I have two students whose windows laptops are riddled with malware and not working properly. They want me to help them install Linux (which we use in school), but they are concerned about their iTunes.

Having avoided iPods as "defective by design", I know nothing about iTunes whatsoever. However I remember reading about DRM locking and such problems that have me concerned that I won't be able to do it.

Where does iTunes store its stuff?

Can I copy its data store to an external drive, and then into a linux home?

Then will it work on wine, or can another manager (rhythmbox etc) access the itunes data?

Alternatively, if I partition the drive and install linux, can rythmbox/wine/something access itunes data on the win partition?

Supposing they are buying music through iTunes, what will happen to that account?

Finally, one of them has an iphone. Does that work with linux?

Ironic that an apple application is blocking migration away from windows.

Ubuntu Servers :: Aptitude Wanting To Remove Packages Added With Apt-get?

Jan 6, 2011

Seems like always if I add a package with apt-get, next time I use aptitude to update packages on a server, the packages I added with apt-get are automatically marked for removal.

I must, in aptitude, "forget new packages" and "cancel pending actions" then update the package list, remark packages needing updating, THEN aptitude has forgotten it wanted to remove packages.

Why can aptitude and apt-get NOT get along!?

Currently I have 10.04 on all servers, thus where it still is a problem.

Ubuntu Servers :: Allow Deluge To Access Torrents Added To Samba Share

Jun 22, 2010

I'm trying to set up the following "server" system. (I say "server" because I'm really running ubuntu-desktop 10.04 LTS):

I have set up Samba and allowed guest access to my /media/Share/data using Windows 7. Everything works great, I can create folders, add files, etc. However I noticed that when I add files or folders via my mapped drive in Windows 7, it defaults to permissions that do not allow Deluge to access them. I realized that if I go back to the server and give it

Code:
sudo chmod 0777 /media/Share/data/(folder or file)

Deluge can now access the files. I don't want to have to modify permissions every time I add a new torrent to Deluge's watch folder which is /media/Share/data/Torrents.

How do I configure Samba (or linux, or windows) to give rwx permissions when I add a file or torrent via windows? And vice versa, if deluge downloads a file and moves it to completed downloads (which I haven't been able to get this far yet) will I be able to access it via Windows 7?

General :: Backing Up Two Partitions - Fedora 12

Aug 23, 2010

On fedora 12 - 1 drive - 2 partitions: a small partition to boot, a big one for all other things - sda1 and sda2.

I would like to use tar to copy them to a different drive. That way I not only back them up but also reorganize them.

(1) approach 1 - 2 drive approach

On second drive (sdb) created 2 partitions with fdisk, used mkfs to put file systems into them.

Easy to do sdb1. I created a directory /target and mounted sdb1 there. Then used tar pipe tar to copy /boot to /target. Appears to be ok.

Not so obvious how to do sdb2. I can mount it at target but

(1) if I copy / to /target there is recursion?? I tried --exclude=/boot --exclude=/target but it went ahead and copied /target.

Also there are a number of things mounted onto / - see output of mount below

Code:
/dev/mapper/vg_knox-lv_root on / type ext4 (rw)
proc on /proc type proc (rw)
sysfs on /sys type sysfs (rw)

Fedora Hardware :: Added Second Disk - Bad Sectors?

Jun 19, 2010

I've just added a second disk to one of my computers. It is a 500GB SATA. It is the second drive according to the BIOS. Fedora calls it /dev/sdb. So far so good. This box is running Fedora 13 final. Never any problems until the addition of the new disk. Palimpsest says that this disk has a LOT of bad sectors. This disk is a storage drive. I want to address the problem but don't know what to do first. My thought is to rsync all the data to my external 250GB disk bedore I do anything else but I'm mot sure if I should just yet. Maybe I should run some diagnostics on the drive? If so, what? How about the tools Disk Utility offers? Should I use the Smart Utilities? What other Linux tools are available and are they reliable? Maybe I should install XP on the main disk and use Windows' disk tools? If I should lose all data it wouldn't be the end of the world but I'm not sure how "in sync" the 2 storage drives actually are.
