Slackware :: Aticonfig Fails With ATI Radeon X300

Apr 21, 2011

I am running Slackware-current 13.37.0 (kernal 2.6.37.6) on my desktop with ATI Radeon X300 video card. I have downloaded the latest driver and installed it successfully with the commands:

But the `aticonfig --initial' fails with the message:

I have already read the "Slackware: ATI SlackBuild (ENG)" from cchtml.com and some of the posts on this forum but couldn't fix the problem.

Fedora Hardware :: Getting Drivers Installed For An ATI Radeon X300 Card In F14?

May 20, 2011

Well I've been trying to get drivers installed for this card for a few days now and I can't get anything to work. The proprietary drivers for this card don't support the xorg version installed in F14. I've tried mesa and ati drivers but I can't get them to actually work, they both just cause x to crash during startup. I've looked through the threads for ati drivers but they all seem to talk about using the latest catalyst drivers and thus non of them have helped me much.

but X won't start if I do that (delete xorg.conf and it goes back to it's fglrx-less state) However, I was successfully able to install the drivers on my Ubuntu install (different partition on the same machine) but not my Debian install.

General :: Installing Ubuntu 10.10 On A Windows 7 System (Dual Booting) With Radeon X300/X550/X1?

Oct 29, 2010

just like most Linux distributions, will happily co-exist on a hard disk with just about any version of Windows. This is a concept known as dual-booting. Essentially, when you power up your PC you will be presented with a menu which provides the option to boot either Ubuntu Linux or Windows. Obviously you can only run one operating system at a time, but it is worth noting that the files on the Windows partition of your disk drive will be available to you from Ubuntu Linux regardless of whether your windows partition was formatted using NTFS. To day I have installed Latest Windows 7 and Latest Ubuntu 10.10 on my office system (Dual booting). This two operating system which I installed in HP dx 7200 micro towers.

Ubuntu :: 64 Bit 10.04 On Radeon HD 5750 - Display Fails During Installation

Aug 31, 2010

I just finished building my new machine. I've got windows 7 running just fine on it, but I wanted to dual boot Ubuntu 10.04. I downloaded the 64 bit iso and tried installing it from both a live cd and a usb drive. When I boot from either (cd or usb), I see the Ubuntu loading/boot screen, but after the data is loaded, my display goes black and seems not to be able to find a signal. I assumed initially that it was probably due to the fact that I was connecting to my tv by HDMI cable. I guessed that Ubuntu did not have HDMI drivers for my video card, ATI Radeon HD 5750, by default. Then today, my new monitor arrived and I switched to the DVI output on my video card. I assumed that this would allow me to boot and install. I was wrong. I experienced the same symptoms on my monitor via DVI as I did on my TV via HDMI. why my monitor drops the signal as soon as it leaves the loading/boot screen?

Ubuntu :: (11.04) Radeon 5700 Series : Catalyst Fails To Launch?

Apr 30, 2011

I really don't know what's going on here. I had Ubuntu 10.10 working great, and noticed 11.04 came out. I had been waiting a while and, for some reason, I decided to start with a fresh install rather than an upgrade. So basically here's what I've done so far:

- Installed Ubuntu 11.04 amd64
- Installed Opera, and XSensors
(sensors-detect only detected my GPU and CPU, not mainboard this time. But I can live with that.)
- Activated the FGLRX driver, rebooted.
---
- Tried to launch Catalyst Control Center, received this error message:
[Initialization error]

There was a problem initializing CCC Linux edition. It could be caused by the following. No ATI graphics driver is installed, or the ATI driver is not functioning properly. Please install the ATI driver apropriate for you ATI hardware, or configure using aticonfig.

Debian Configuration :: Squeeze: Suspend/hibernate Resume Fails With Radeon Graphics

Aug 6, 2010

I am running Squeeze on an older Compaq EVO laptop with radeon graphics.

A few months ago, after an upgrade, suspend and hibernate stopped working. The suspend or hibernate worked fine, but the resume just hung with a black screen. I finally got around to looking into it and found a workaround.

The workaround is to disable Kernel Mode Setting for the radeon. This can be done by adding the boot parameter "radeon.modeset=0" or by editing /etc/modprobe.d/radeon-kms.conf so that it includes the line "options radeon modeset=0".

If you are interested in the details, you can search for problem reports related to radeon kernel mode setting.

Hardware :: Put A Radeon 8500DV Card In Slackware Box?

Aug 6, 2010

I decided to put a Radeon 8500DV card in my Slackware box. Works fine with the Vesa driver. Problem is, I'm using a widescreen monitor, and Vesa doesn't support my default resolution (1366x768). So I thought I'd do a little editing in my xorg.conf file and fix it right up.

I logged on as root, and did "X -configure", then I went in and edited the file it made me and put in the appropriate values for my monitor and resolution. And then it copied it over my xorg.conf file, and typed startx. Voila! Looked great, and I checked the settings to be sure I was in 1366x768. It worked fine!

Once.

Then I logged out and tried "startx" with my user account. As soon as I do, my monitor displays "No Signal"... weird - cause it just worked. So I rebooted, and logged on as root, and tried startx again. "No Signal"

So why would it work just once and not again. I tried repeating my steps exactly, and still can't get it to come up.

Here is the xorg.conf I used when it did work:

Slackware :: Bttv & Radeon Return From Suspend

Jun 5, 2011

In 2.6.37rc and later, there began an issue with regard to resuming my bttv card after suspend. The problem is that the tuner device is no longer seen upon resume after suspend. Luckily, I have found that the issue appears only when both bttv & radeon are loaded prior to suspend. So I am able to resolve/avoid the issue if

1) bttv loaded & radeon unloaded
2) bttv unloaded & radeon loaded

While I may revisit bisecting, I would like to have a pretty good idea on what to focus on. I have already tried to slim down the kernel to the key drivers during bisect, but I want to look more how the interaction of the two drivers plays into it. What I need is some background on suspend, some hardware specs, or some type of suspend debugger/hints where to look. Since the tuner is a dead simple device, it is hard to see where it could go wrong. So perhaps it is the PCI bus. The radeon card is PCI-X, and the tuner card is PCI. But it could also be I2C or SMBUS? Also note that in the prior kernel, 2.6.36, it is perfectly fine.

Debian Configuration :: Radeon DRI Driver, Clicking "Apply" It Fails?

Mar 3, 2011

i couldn't get out after many hours of reading documents/posts/forums etc.

The issue:In Kde 4.4.5, using xorg and radeon opensource driver, i can't set OpenGL for desktop effects. Clicking "Apply" it fails. OpenGL seems corrupted someway. I have to stay on XRender. This is the glxinfo output:

glxinfo | grep OpenGL
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa Project
OpenGL renderer string: Software Rasterizer
OpenGL version string: 2.1 Mesa 7.7.1
OpenGL shading language version string: 1.20
OpenGL extensions:

The story:i was running previously kde with nvidia propertary driver and a nvidia board. Then i removed the board for a fault and put a sapphire radeon HD5450. Initially i set up propertary radeon fglrx. At the end, i decided to use the opensource drivers, removed in the best way all fglrx files and links. So i then followed the wiki for reinstall open source radeon drivers, did it many times, also reinstalling xorg with purge, same for libgl1-mesa-xxx etc, but i still cannot use the OpenGL hardware support (should be DRI, that is correctly installed but not loaded).

Seems to be really an opengl corruption, if i disable the check on apply, and select OpenGL rendering, i get a complete blank screen.

Slackware :: ATI Radeon X700 DRI / ATI Card Configuration/driver?

May 11, 2010

I am setting up a system that I was recently given and am having some problems with the ATI card configuration/driver (I think).

THE SYSTEM

System is P4 3.0Ghz, 1GB RAM, 200GB SATA with new full install of Slackware 13, Fluxbox WM/DE.

Code:
lspci lines:01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV410 [Radeon X700 Pro (PCIE)]
01:00.1 Display controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV410 [Radeon X700 Pro (PCIE)] (Secondary)
I have read a lot of things that seem confusing to me, but I have set it up mostly with info from slackwiki.org, and after reading various threads here at LQ.

I am using an xorg.conf created with Xorg -configure, with the radeon driver and have added the DRI section and enabled options per the above URL.

THE SYMPTOMS

First, X starts and I can run glxgears and get a frame rate of 3100+.

But glxinfo seems incorrect:

Code:
glxinfo |grep -i render
GL_RENDERER: Mesa DRI R300 20060815 x86/MMX/SSE2 TCL
I see no "direct rendering: yes" as seems to be required (am I missing something?).

Most things seem to work such as video playback from DVD and Flash.

At boot the vesa modes do not work and I have to use vga=normal, which is no big problem, although a better framebuffer mode would be nice if possible.

But the first big problem I hit is running Blender. When it starts my screen goes blank with just the mouse cursor visible and moving. To get out of this I can kill X or ctl-alt-Fx to get a new login and kill the blender process. Oddly, I found I can also alt-F2 (Open a Run dialog in Fluxbox) which opens with a running Blender behind it - but any attempt to interact with the blender window reverts to the blank screen with mouse cursor.

I believe this to be due to the lack of DRI mostly because of a similar problem once encountered on another system - but am open to other suggestions.

But I think I need to better understand and configure the drivers for this video card before troubleshooting any applications.

So, I guess my questions would be:

1. Is the radeon driver the best choice for this card?
2. Are there advantages/disadvantages to using the ATI driver instead? (Is there a slackbuild for the proprietary driver?)
3. Can someone point me to any better sources of info for ATI cards/drivers used under Slackware?

Slackware :: Slow Graphics With 13.37 And Radeon Mobility X1600

May 4, 2011

I've upgraded (reinstalled) from Slackware 13.1 to 13.37 on an old iMac and have problems with slow graphics.
lspci says this about the graphics card:

Code:

With Slackware 13.1 I had no KMS enabled and graphics speed was okay. It wasn't very good, but okay for everyday work. Now with 13.37 it's extremely slow. glxgears runs with only around 38 fps, no matter what I do. And every now and then when logging off, I get a black screen and no new kdm-login. But I can ssh into that machine and restart X by issuing 'init 3;init 4'.

KMS is enabled (I've also tried disabling it, but then KDE crashes right after logging in) and it's a fresh installation of 13.37 with a 2.6.37.6 kernel.

What can I do?

I have to admin I don't know this video and X stuff very well and I used to have machines with NVIDIA cards.

If there's anything else than the usual Xorg.0.log needed.

To me the log doesn't look like there's any problem whatsoever:

Trying to get execigraph to work with aticonfig in conky. The following line works after a fashion, displaying the number & % symbol: Code: ${execi 10 aticonfig --adapter=0 --odgc | grep "GPU load" | cut -c32-34} but the following displays either a static vertical line on the right edge of my conky or nothing at all:

Code: ${execigraph 10 aticonfig --adapter=0 ---odgc | grep "GPU load" | cut -c32-33} I've tried tinkering with default_graph_size, with ""s around the aticonfig etc part, with the -c values in cut, have googled to the point of despair & tried various lines using tail or gawk (I don't have a clue about these, even after trying to read up, so tinkering with the values has been fruitless guesswork) that I found in forums. Nothing works. I think the main problem is that sometimes the result of aticonfig etc is a number between 0 & 99 which execigraph requires but if the gpu load is <10 then the result is a number and the % symbol. But this might be completely wrong because even when the load is >10, there's no graph.
