Slackware :: Powerful Indexed Search Tool

Jun 9, 2011

I am familiar with slackware's slocate. What slocate doesn't have is an option to limit returned results from specific users or groups. What's more I can't seem to find a gui/web frontend so that people without knowledge of cli can benefit from the slocate's indexed search. So I turn to you all, is there another tool, that supports per user/group searching and a web (preferably) frontend?(clarification) i think slocate returns results related to the user running the search (files that he owns as well as files that are owned by his primary and other groups). Is that correct? I basically want a search user (who will be a member of the several groups that our office is structured like) to get results by giving as search criteria not only the filename, but also the owner of the file and / or the group

Ubuntu :: Indexed Search For Files By Filename?

Jun 23, 2011

Is there really no way of having with a GUI an indexed file search by filename (not contents etc) which gives a detailed list? Great big icons as a "result" is no good to me, I want "details" that I can then click on to either open or copy etc. I tried the totally useless "Tracker" and Zeitgeist in my 11.04 is no better. There is a fantastic product in the win environment called everything.exe which does exactly what I want. I cannot be alone in this type of requirement. It has to have a GUI.

General :: Command Line Search Tool

Apr 10, 2011

This is a bit of a long shot and I think the answer will be no but I thought I'd ask just in case. I have a number of tutorials in html but I want to be able to search for particular information in these files and display that information in the terminal rather than having to go through a browser. Apart from using grep which gives a pretty messy display or having to write a a specially Bash or python script, is there any command line tools that can provide such a function?

Software :: Desktop Search Tool For CentOS 5.6?

Jun 12, 2011

I am looking for a tool to index the files on my PC to allow full text search. I use recoll on Ubuntu and it does a great job. As I described in a previous post there does not seem to be an rpm package available for recoll on CentOS and I have not been able to build from source. So I tried beagle. In a nutshell the old version of beagle available for CentOS 5.6 does not do a good job of indexing pdf files. The newest version, tried on Linux Mint, does not do much better. And the beagle web site seems to be gone so I am not sure if it is an active product.

I have done some searching and most of what I find appear to be tools for indexing a web server. That is a bit of an overkill for my needs. I simply want to be able to search old email archives, OpenOffice documents, text and pdf files stored and accessed locally on the PC?

I did some research online and found that this is done by clicking on the "search" icon under Applications > Accessories but there is not icon entitled Beagle nor search there? How do I access it?

Ubuntu :: Use Multiple Words / Terms (boolean AND) With Gnome Search Tool

May 27, 2010

I just want to search file names, not their content.

Using gnome-search-tool, if I search for "word1 word3" I can't find "word1 word2 word3.txt" but I do find it (and too many others) if I just search for "word1"

I would have thought a boolean AND search would just be automatic, but I guess not. I've already come across searchmonkey, but I'm not smart enough to figure out how to set it up to do this - i.e. I don't want to have to use regular expressions or be typing "*" all over the place.

P.S. I do use google desktop search, but I hate using it as the results are way too narrow to be of any use and haven't been able to figure out how to widen it.

P.P.S. I also found this: In terminal type gconf-editor and find gnome-search-tool in the Apps. Then look for the field quick_search_second_scan_excluded_paths and change the slash to nothing, i.e. delete the "/".

It worked for my ubuntu 10.04 pc, but not this one (ubuntu 9.1) - so I thought maybe there's another way...

how nepomuk is supposed to work on opensuse 11.4 KDE? My nepomuk is active but it always says in "systemsettings" that 0 files are indexed. When I do a search via Dolphin, it never finds a file. It doesn't matter if I select "from here" or "everywhere". I also tried to select the root dir '/' to look for files to index, but still nepomuk says 0 files are indexed and dolphin finds nothing.

Slackware :: Search Harddrive For MBR Backup?

Nov 2, 2010

I screwed up and managed to overwrite my MBR with one that had a different partition table, thereby losing access to all of my partitions and data. Now, I was semi-smart and backed up the MBR before I did this, but the "semi-" part is that I backed it up onto the hard drive in question because I was thinking only in terms of losing my ability to boot from the MBR, not the whole partition table.

So...as I see it my only means to recover my data is to find and recover that 512 byte block on the disk media. Having read a little bit, this seems possible given that I know to look for a) the MBR signature at offset 510, b) the partition status byte at offset 446, and c) the partition type byte at offset 450.

What I need is help figuring out the most efficient way to do this. I've experimented with a shell script using dd, hexdump, and grep, but searching 1000 blocks takes ~20seconds, so to search the whole drive (100GB) will take something like 800hrs. This is limited, I believe, by the fact that my live disk of Knoppix won't recognize a drive on the SATA bus, so I had the target drive mounted through a USB adapter. But even if it were being accessed via SATA, I have a feeling it would be pretty slow.

I need someone who is an expert to help me figure out a script, program, etc. that can search for and identify the sector where my MBR backup resides more efficiently.

General :: Choosing A Fast And Powerful Distro?

I know what I'm looking for, a lightweight, fast, minimalist but customizable enough, with no specific graphical environment, bleeding edge distro for a new laptop (used for studying and surfing internet), that hopefully works with my hardware.

I want to have the possibility to compile from source to make my own changes but also to install from binaries easily. I'm not a linux expert, not even an advanced user but I'm willing to learn anything to get my distro running so I'm not looking for a full out of the box distro. It would be great if this distro also had a good community.

Slackware :: Tool For Managing Package To Format Compat32?

Sep 11, 2010

I started writing compat32pkg late April. At the begining it was only for my personal use (and for the fun), and, it was only dedicated to automate updates of 32-bit part of the 32-bit compatibility layer (AlienBob's multilib). Afterward, I improved it, I added some features and now, it provides all the necessary for managing (converting, installing, upgrading, remove) of 32-bit part of the multilib, and others packages which are part of Slackware-32 like firefox, seamonkey, jre,. As I guess it could be usefull for others, I decided to publish it. So, if you want it, you can grab it at [URL]... But before that, I guess that you want to know a bit more about it. So, let's go. The installation of compat32pkg is done as for any Slackware package, using the command installpkg :

[code]...

If you want to convert packages to format compat32 only, you have to use compat32pkg in mode --convert instead of --install :

[code]...

The example below will give you the list of all available packages from the selected mirror and the status of the compat32 version (installed, not installed, update) of these packages......

The Ultimate Bootable CD (UBCD) is a great live CD with a host of great tools and utlilities, useful to anyone interested in making a broken system bootable again. It is a good idea to familiarise yourself with this CD by having a look through it often,so that when you need to use it you know where things are...learning the command line syntax is better but this is a very useful stop gap while that process is ongoing...

You can have a look at it from here[URL]..download [URL].. burn at 8x I use CD-RW discs to save wasting Cd's...boot the CD up using function key or BIOS set for CD/DVD as first boot device. i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?

i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...

All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.
