General :: Do Users Need Very Powerful PC?
Jan 24, 2011
purely want to use linux for doing documents, writing software, internet, do you need very powerful PC? we can see intel/AMD are coming out with very powerful CPU/APU or whatever high end - 4-8 core processors,it is nice to own a system running with latest technology CPU,anyway, will it be a waste if you only run Linux on such system?because linux always only need minimum hardware requirements.

I have tried puppy, knoppix, and nimblex all trying to copy the contents of a crashed drive to an external. They all have problems writing to the external even though it is listed as "(rw)" I guess because a liveCD doesn't want to touch the installed system (?)
What is the most powerful linux liveCD which allows one to write from anything to anything else with all safety turned off?

I've been using linux for a while (various distros) but somehow they dissapointed me. I know what I'm looking for, a lightweight, fast, minimalist but customizable enough, with no specific graphical environment, bleeding edge distro for a new laptop (used for studying and surfing internet), that hopefully works with my hardware.
I want to have the possibility to compile from source to make my own changes but also to install from binaries easily. I'm not a linux expert, not even an advanced user but I'm willing to learn anything to get my distro running so I'm not looking for a full out of the box distro. It would be great if this distro also had a good community.

I am familiar with slackware's slocate. What slocate doesn't have is an option to limit returned results from specific users or groups. What's more I can't seem to find a gui/web frontend so that people without knowledge of cli can benefit from the slocate's indexed search. So I turn to you all, is there another tool, that supports per user/group searching and a web (preferably) frontend?(clarification) i think slocate returns results related to the user running the search (files that he owns as well as files that are owned by his primary and other groups). Is that correct? I basically want a search user (who will be a member of the several groups that our office is structured like) to get results by giving as search criteria not only the filename, but also the owner of the file and / or the group

I am with Ubuntu 11.04 32Bit edition and I use (and love!) FileZilla. I just run the update procedure and it says there's out the new v3.5.0 but if I try to get it via Software Update it doesn't show results. How do I do to add it via Package Manager? There are some Official Beta/Nightly repositories can I add?
Another question... I'm looking for a powerful screengrabber, SnagIT like, there are any advanced tool on Linux? I tried running SnagIT via WINE but it doesn't work.

I am looking for a powerful (500mw+) wifi USB adapter for my netbook, and after spending quite a bit of time on Amazon, Newegg and Google I couldn't find anything that would work properly on Fedora without compiling the drivers and stuff. Some are reported to work on Debian distros, but couldn't find any reliable reports of them working on Fedora.

When I have different people log into our ftp and browse to the same folder, some people see the files inside, some don't. all the user accounts are in the same group, which has permission to this folder. but the one user who can see the files is the owner. how can i fix it so everyone in that group who's the owner of the folder can see the files?

Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password. What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.
Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?
Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.

I work as an system administrator for AIX and Linux servers. We have an FTP server running in Linux which has shared folders to Windows domain using Samba. The new requirement is to map users created to Linux machine to Windows users in such a way that, when a user logins into Windows machine with an ID say "X123" in domain "TEST", his access control to the samba shares should reflect based on the same user ID created in Linux machine.(FYI. Both the Windows and LINUX machines are in same network and domain). Please let me know the step by step procedure to configure Linux machine (smb.conf entries or any new file to be created for user mapping) to identify Windows user Login and provide access restrictions accordingly.

If I want to add Windows & Mac users as Samba users, must I first add them all as Ubuntu users? If so, since none of the other users will actually be working on the Ubuntu Server, how do I disable the other non-admin users on the Ubuntu Server login screen. I am using Webmin to administer some server settings, and command line for others.

how to map all domain users form group Domain Users to local group users (and maybe some more)? Im using Ubuntu 10.04 x32. We are trying to set up a classroom training environment where our SIG can hold classes for prospective converts from Microsoft/Mac. The ten machines will have /home/student01..10 and /home/linsig01..10 as users. We want /home/student01 to be able to explore and sudo so they can learn to administer their personal machines at home. We don't want them to be able to modify (sudo) /home/linsig01. I've seen the tutorial on Access Control Lists but I'd like other input so we get it right the first time.

In other Linux distros I've used, new users are assigned to their own group (i.e. user 'joe', group 'joe') by default. To my surprise, when I create new users with my openSUSE 11.4, they are all assigned to the 'users' shared group by default. To test this, I created a new user called 'friends'. From my terminal, I can see how the new user files look like:
joe@linux:~> ls -l /home/friends/
total 40
drwxr-xr-x 2 friends users 4096 Sep 3 11:37 bin
[code]...

Currently I am trying to set up PuTTy from my Windows laptop to my Xubuntu laptop. (My Windows laptop is one I got from work. I want to use some Linux commands, since it's easier and performing faster.)I got to the point where there are 5 accounts logged in. test@tty1, mark@tty8, test@pts/1, test@pts/2 and test@pts/0.
I didn't know which one I am at the moment with my laptop (since I shut down some PuTTy instances). So I used: vi newfile1 using PuTTy and went over to my other laptop (the Xubuntu one) and used w. It shows that I am logged in with PuTTy at the moment as test@pts/0.This means I have got test@pts/1 and test@pts/2 as users I cannot access anymore ( I think... ). So I want to log them out.
Logging them out seems a hassle, since I can't use PuTTy anymore ( closed those windows...). Searching on google, I came across SKILL. I used sudo skill -STOP -u test@pts/1. This gave me the response: ERROR: -u used with bad data. Looking at the man page, nothing really cleared up for me.

I have inherited a RedHat 5.4 server that is having an odd issue. Root and all of the user accounts can log in via SSH. Not a single account can log in via the console (sitting in front of the server). If I bring it up in single user made, I can log in with root all day long.
I want to say that this has something to do with PAM, but this is when I play my "Noob" card. Could anyone possibly steer me in the right direction to figure out what is going on?

I'm moving in with my girlfriend and we want to connect our Linux Boxes via nfs. One problem: on my computer, I am user id 1001 and she is 1002, and on her computer, she is 1001 and I am 1002.
When mounting a filesystem via nfs, is it possible to remap users, so that 1001 is treated as 1002 on the remote machine and vice versa? If so, which nfs parameters do I need when mounting?

i have to create 100 users in Linux with some password can it be done in one go i tried newuser command but the home directory is not created for those users.
plus when i login for the first time into a server i got
EXECUTING /etc/profile ...
EXECUTING .profile ...
EXECUTING /xyz/abc/bin/setenv.ksh file ...
before the prompt. The above three lines shows that some kind of script was set to run when a user login for the first time that will create the home directory (if i am not guessing wrong)and never run if user login again.
