Slackware :: Movie Plays Correctly But KDE Reports 'Audio Codec: None'
Sep 15, 2010
After experimenting with version 6.0 of ffmpeg there were a few issues i was not totally happy with, so i decided to downgrade back to the 2008 build of ffmpeg. However now whenever i encode a libxvid/libmp3lame movie with ffmpeg (using the exact same settings I have always used), the output created .avi file is reported by KDE as having:
Quote:
Audio Codec: none
This is truly odd (and quite annoying) as the .avi movie plays correctly with sound on both Smplayer and Kaffeine, so i don't think it is a codec issue, but it just does not display the correct audio codec tag anymore. how the metabar properties are controlled in KDE?, or if there is a config that I can adjust to make the new created output .avi's report the Audio Codec correctly as 'mp3'? (like it used to). Also, does anyone know if ffmpeg 6.0 may have left some files behind on my system that is causing this sudden odd behavior?
Kernel 2.6.21.5, GNU (slackware 12.0). KDE 3.5.7. MPlayer 1.0rc2-4.1.2.
I have a .avi file on the hard (really on a cd-rom, but it's just the same). Being in the GUI (KDE), I do Main Menu>Run Command and then, in the dialog box, I enter 'gmplayer foo.avi'. Gmplayer starts, the picture of a small console is seen on the screen, and the audio from the movie is heard. Just as if I had inserted the CD into a stand alone dvd player but I could not see the image. I compiled and installed mplayer (with GUI support) from the slackbuilds.org sources and script for slackware 12.0, which is the slack version installed in my machine. If I open a terminal (in the GUI) and run gmplayer there I get this:
Code: VIDEOOUT: [VO_XV] It seems there is no Xvideo support for your video card available. [VO_XV] Run 'xvinfo' to verify its Xv support and read [VO_XV] DOCS/HTML/en/video.html#xv! [VO_XV] See 'mplayer -vo help' for other (non-xv) video out drivers. [VO_XV] Try -vo x11. CPLAYER: Error opening/initializing the selected video_out (-vo) device.
I know I could do what is suggested by gmplayer but, before that, perhaps I am simply invoking gmplayer in the wrong way. That is: there are at least to ways: using the Run Command dialog box and opening a terminal and running as a cli command.
This never happened with Ubuntu 8.10-9.10, but both my video players, VLC and Movie Player, say they can't find the wma codec (actually it says wmas, and this is referring to videos not audio) and says that this can't be put right, even though at the same time these players have begun to play the video correctly. I've got all the updates and the Restricted Extras, etc. Everything seems to be working. This is on an Acer Aspire One, dual booting with W7, installed from USB stick. I don't want to have to close the notification box each time.

I want to listen to this audio file: [URL] but my real player 11.0.0.4028 gold desn play it, it says that there is a codec 28_8 missing, I go to relaplayer page, download the last release available for linux systems, but the message is the same : audio codec missing and doesn't play the audio.
I havev tried to play the audio with smplayer (not luck), vlc can play the audio but the pause button doesn't work so I have to listen the entire audio all the time I stop it playing. Is there any audio player capable od reproducing in the proper way this audio in ubuntu? No one of my video players totem, smplayer, realplayer or vlc are capable of playing this video: [URL]
When I installed Wicd, and ran it for the first time, I got an error something like: "Could not connect to Wicd's dbus session- check the Wicd log file for more info". However, later when I restarted my computer, Wicd started, but I can't connect to my network, it shows up as <hidden>, I can connect to linksys, so I know that wireless is working on that computer. I know that there's nothing wrong with my wireless router, because I can connect to my network in this computer.
I'm trying to view a movie in totem but an error occurs saying missin plugin text/html totem can't find im when it asks to search for. what can i do to solve this error
I have an issue that I have been trying to fix for the last one week and failing. I am working on an IP phone where I have two Audio codecs -
CARD 0: IDT HDA Code for the Handset CARD 1: NXP USB Codec for the Speakerphone
I can play music on each of them using command line commands. But when I use ALSA APIs, I can only play music on CARD 1 (Speaker phone) and not on CARD 0 at all.
The code I have for CARD 1 is: snd_pcm_open(&phandle, "plughw:1,0", SND_PCM_STREAM_PLAYBACK, 0);
I have all the other API calls as well.. and I am using PCM STREAM RATE = 16000, Channels = 1 for initializing. BUt when I change the devide to: "plughw:0,0" -- I get no audio on the handset.
I have recently swapped over to debian (KDE 32bit) from linux mint, however vlc only plays audio, no video (This is for .avi's, .wmv's and rtsp streams, probably others but that what i have available to try). I've installed debian multimedia and dragon player will play .avi's fine, though crashes with .wmv's .
Output if i start play a video vlc through terminal VLC media player 1.1.3 The Luggage (revision exported) Blocked: call to unsetenv("DBUS_ACTIVATION_ADDRESS")
I recently switched my usb external soundcard from an M-Audio Fast Track Pro to an Edirol UA-25EX (i can get 24bit working on it - that's why). After making the switch, all audio programs are working just fine except for Audacious. When i try to play audio, i get 00:00 and no playing. The output plugin is ALSA and the audio device is UA-25EX. I don't understand why it's not playing the audio.
My configuration-Ubuntu9.04. My VLC plays only the first audio file in the playlist among the files in the playlist, after that it automatically exit. When I press the next tab, then also it exit.I've reinstalled VLC,but also the problem exist. "VLC media player 0.9.4 Grishenko"
I can play a video on XP, but there's no audio in Lucid. The hardware is a Lenovo SL400, 2GB RAM, 7200rpm drive w/ 36GB free, and an Intel T5870 Core 2 Duo 2GHz CPU.Media player and Banshee fails to play the video with the error messageNo packages with the requested plugins foundThe requested plugins areWindows Media Audio 9

I found out that package 'qt-4.5.3_063bded-i486-3' in slackware-current has no html docs. I learn qt4 programming and I need this docs. So I got qt-4.6.1 from the official site, built, installed and use the mainline version 4.6.1 instead of recommended qt from the KDE git brunch. Honestly I see no difference between slackware's 4.5.3 and mainline 4.6.1.Is there place where I can send bug reports or suggestions about slackware distro? I really like this simple, fast, reliable and completely clear distributive and I want to help to improve it.
I'm having a really random intermittent fault with video files... all kinds... and also happens with different media players... they lock up the entire system but when i reboot they'll play fine...could this be the graphics card? it's a Sparkle Nvidia Geforce 9500.... is there any reccomendations for a suitable replacement that doesn't cost the earth... I'm looking at starting 3D animation too, so was looking to upgrade anyway...there was some kind of error that randomly popped up once or twice when it was playing files...
For X-Mas I got myself a nice little nettop running off an ION motherboard. how to enable HDMI audio output, but got it to work. I've realized that when I'm in XBMC (which is admittedly the only place I watch movies) certain sounds like gunshots will be extremely louder than something like dialog. My friend believes that I should mess around with the channels (to fake the center channel from the left and right) I don't want to threaten Linux, how lightweight I can make it which is critical to an HTPC, but considering XBMC just got a Netflix addon
I have 9.04 and I recently "got" a 13.2GB 1080p HD movie. When I try to play it, it's choppy and mosaic like. The audio plays fine, but the video jumps and I can't get a clean picture except for maybe 15% of the time. I have to hold down the spacebar so it plays and pauses very quickly for the video to even proceed. I've updates VLC and Movie Player and I've downloaded many codecs and I can't seem to fix it.EDIT: I can play it in Movie Player without the pixel/mosaic-like effect, but it too is extremely choppy.
AVI movie files aren't playing well in Ubuntu. I get audio but the screen stays black, there's no picture. I downloaded VLC player and mplayer and neither of them work. Same thing: Black screen with audio. Is there a codec pack out there that I should download or something?
I'm trying to burn mp3's into uncompressed .wav formats on a CD to play on a radio CD player that doesnt accept .mp3 cd's. When I try to add my .mp3 files, I get the error that the file isnt supported by any of the gstreamer codecs installed, with also the following message:
"Make sure the appropriate codec is installed." I have the gst-fluendo-mp3 package installed, I uninstalled and reinstalled brasero,
I use chrome browser and whenever i watch videos(say on .....),after that i am not able to use another sound applications like rythmbox or movie player(I get videos with vlc but no sound). However when i close the browser, rythmbox(all sound applications) plays sound. This is not there in windows. My sound card is Creative Labs EMU10k1X.
I'm fairly new to Linux so I'm going to need a step-by-step guide to get me out of this rut. The install of Linux was fine but when I booted up I got this error. VFS: Cannot open root device "302" or unknown-block (3,2) append a correct "root=" boot option;here are the available partitions;
0800 78150744 sda driver:sd 0801 47428608 sda1 <-- this is my Windows partition 0802 30719552 sda2 <-- this is my Linux partition 0b00 1048575 sr0 driver:sr 0b01 1048575 sr1 driver:sr
Kernel panic - not syncing:VFS:Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block (3,2) I guessed from reading this error Lilo isn't pointing to the right partition to boot from? How will I fix this? I read another thread about boot problems on these forums and a guy said to do this:
#mkdir /slacktemp #mount /dev/device /slacktemp #chroot /slacktemp #cd /slacktemp/etc <-- for me it told me that doesn't exist #vi lilo.conf <-- couldn't do nothing and was frozen #lilo -v -t -b /dev/device #lilo -v -b /dev/device
The above solution did not work for me. Can anyone shed a light on a Linux rookie?
I have a display problem since updating to Slackware 13.37. Everything was fine on Slackware 13.1, but when I switched to 13.37 some piece of software came up with the wrong monitor size. I have a 1600x900 LCD monitor but the X screen came up as 1024x768 with blackness on either side of it. Under Slackware 13.1 the X screen came up as 1600x900 as it should without any prompting from me; I didn't even have an Xorg.conf file. I tried using the Xorg.conf file which was needed and work for older Slackwares, eg 12.*, but it didn't work. (Saying it didn't work is a gross understatement! That old Xorg.conf completely screwed up mouse, keyboard, and monitor; the screen was flashing and nothing worked. The only way to get control back was to SSH into the machine from my laptop and reboot. Killing the X server via that SSH console did NOT the flashing or get me back to my console login; only reboot worked.)
I find I can get the screen to be the right size manually by going through KDE's "System Settings" --> "Display and Monitor" --> "Size & Orientation", then disabling "LVDS1" and setting VGA1 to 1600x900. The size of my odd-sized monitor is being correctly detected for the "Auto" choice. Upon reboot LVDS1 stays disabled but VGA1 reverts to 1024x768 so I have to do this each time.I've done some search of the on-line literature regarding the error messages I am seeing in the boot log.
People are suggesting changing all kinds of things to alleviate the side effects of the "conflicting" error message above, even modifying GRUB parameters (which won't work for me since I use LILO).So, I have a manual work around which I must do each time I log in. Does someone know how I can get X or KDE to force 1600x900 upon start (while Linux/X/whoever find and fix the problem) or does someone know of a real fix?
I have just upgraded my box to be more multimedia friendly and one of the upgrades was to improve the sound card. I decided to get the Asus Xonar DX pci-e card. I have it working but the speakers are not plugged into the front output socket as the xonar dx only plays sound from side surround output. Will the sound be any better from the front out on my 2.0 speaker system or is the sound being directed out of the side surround out full quality? How to overcome this discrepancy?
I got the following task from my boss. I have to find out if there is some alternative tool for create reports from Squid except SARG. Now, we use SARG, but my boss told to me, that the main problem of SARG is, that SARG generate huge amount files, which cause problems during migration our servers. He told to me the following condition for change of current tool (SARG):
* standard package of Debian * generate less amount of files, optimal is to save reports to the database
So I would like to ask you if you know about some tool (I can not find some by google)... and the best would be if you told to me some practical experiences.
I have a lenovo g555 laptop, about a week old with lucid installed, and whenever i try to play things through the headphones, they come through the speakers as well. I've tried tinkering around in alsa, but the ony two levels are Master and PCM, which seem to adjust both headphones and speakers at once. My audio codec is "Conexant ID 5069"
