Slackware :: KDE - What To Do After Upgrading From 13.1 To 13.37

May 1, 2011

Some time in the past after upgrading from one version of Slackware to another, I remember having issues using the previous version's .kde directory. This was remedied by removing that directory and letting KDE recreate it followed by me painstakingly migrating files one by one to get all my settings, mail, etc. under the new version of KDE. Is this the case with the upgrade from 13.1 to 13.37 and is there a better way that I'm missing?!

Slackware :: Graphics Not Loading After Upgrading To Slackware-Current

Feb 26, 2011

I've upgraded Slackware-13.1 I had installed to Slackware-Current using a local tree I had download with mirror-slackware-current.sh script, but when I rebooted I could not get the graphics to load. I think it's because I've also modified /etc/groups and add an username after audio: and video: group, but I forgot that and had to remove slackware from the machine.

Slackware :: Upgrading KDE From 4.2 To 4.3 (64bit)

Mar 30, 2010

I'm trying to upgrade KDE from 4.2 to 4.3 since I encountered couples of problem with it and some people suggested me to upgrade it to 4.3.

Questions:
1. Is KDE 4.3 available in 64 bit?
2. KDE consists of bunch of packages, what is the best way to start? Should I uninstall the whole current packages in my machine and then install the new ones?
3. Using pkgtool, how do I know if I remove the whole KDE packages? Are all KDE packages named that begin with word "KDE"?
4. How to do this safely so to avoid corrupting the system?

Slackware :: Upgrading Slack From 13.1 To 13.37?

May 2, 2011

I have some doubts about the official Pat's upgrading procedure. In the UPGRADE.TXT file, one of the stepts says:

Code:
upgradepkg --install-new *.t?z What does --install-new mean? Pkgs I have no installed on my 13.1 will be installed on the 13.37 upgrade? For example, I did not installed KDE on 13.1. Will be installed when upgrade? - What about third party pkgs? Slacky, SlackBuilds.org, compiled by myself. Should I remove them before upgrading slack?

Slackware :: Upgrading 64 Kernel Packages

Jan 23, 2010

Code:

1. Upgrade the kernel and kernel-modules packages normally.

That sounds simple except that day-to-day, I don't run a stock Slackware kernel. I compile and run my own and always have. As I look back on my history with Slackware, I don't think I've ever upgraded kernel packages once I got a system up and running. When there's been big changes (2.4 to 2.6, for example), I've done a full re-install.

Most recently when I made the jump to 64bit, I did a full install using the huge.s kernel and once everything worked, I downloaded the current source from kernel.org and was on my way. I haven't booted huge.s since that day.

I do, of course, know how to upgrade my own custom kernel, but I like having huge.s installed as a backup. If I upgrade gcc/glibc, compile a new custom kernel and update lilo.conf/fstab without upgrading huge.s, then I will be left with only one working kernel.

So, my question is: is it simply a matter of running upgradepkg on the 6 kernel packages (headers, modules, firmware, generic, huge and source)? or is there more to it than that..ie, what about the system maps and symlinks in /boot?

Slackware :: Upgrading To -current And Multi-lib From 13.1?

Nov 16, 2010

I'm looking at running -current instead of 13.1, and wondering about 'upgrading' to -current, as well as running multi-lib. I found the following procedures from another post of about a year ago, but I'm not sure from what directory to run such a script:

Code:

# Upgrade to Slackware64-current
upgradepkg --install-new slackware64-current/slackware64/*.t?z
# Download compat32 stuff

[code]....

Should the procedures above work for me? and although I know that things may occasionally break here and there (and get fixed too), are there any known issues right now that would break things on my machine?

Slackware :: Corrupted Graphics In TightVNC After Upgrading To Slack-13.0?

Nov 13, 2010

I've recently upgraded from Slackware 12.2 to Slackware 13.0 and so far everything works fine with one exception: the TightVNC package that comes with Slackware-13.0 (in /extra) produces a garbled desktop. Applications look fine, but the default desktop of 13.0 is corrupted. Restarting the VNC server doesn't solve the problem. Before the upgrade, I had 1.3.9 compiled from source. I have just installed the 1.3.10 package that came with Slack-13.0 on top of what was there, hoping it would overwrite old files as needed (couldn't find an automatic uninstall procedure for 1.3.9).

I have attached a printscreen. Notice the taskbar and the top left quarter of the screen. Firefox seems to be rendered properly though. Has anyone encountered this before or may have a clue what could be causing it?

I just want to update a 13.37 current that I installed about three weeks ago to the now final release 13.37. Slackware :: Kernel Panic After Upgrading Slackware64-current To 2.6.32.x Kernel?

Jan 20, 2010

I have one machine where I have several versions installed on different partitions. The base partition (/dev/hda1) is Slack 12.1. On a spare partition (/dev/hdc4) I had installed Slackware64-current. Last week I slackpkg upgraded and installed the 2.6.32.2 kernel, and now that partition will not boot. I know that with the new kernels the hd* designation has been removed, and have already redone that fstab (accessing it from a different boot) to reflect the sd*. Here is the slack64 section of my lilo.conf:

Code:
# Linux bootable partition config begins

Slackware :: "L 02 02 02" Error On When Upgrading To Slack 13.37?

Jun 22, 2011

I just upgraded from 13.1 to 13.37 and I'm getting the L 02 02 02 error. This means that lilo can't find the partition it's told to boot. It's strange because:

- I haven't tweaked anything in the hardware
- I kept the same partitions, just formated
- I'm using ext3, as with 13.1
- I installed lilo on MBR (while on setup, and later with -M /dev/sda)
- I choose the huge smp kernel, as with 13.1
- I have only two partitions, root (sda1) and swap (sda2)
- the root partition is the active one (asterisk), on fdisk

So I tried:

- reseting the BIOS
- removing the UTF8 setting on lilo.conf
- using the lilo.conf that worked with 13.1

They all failed. I don't even know what to try!

PS: The hardware is a Pentium 4 1500Mhz with 512MB RAM on Asus P4B.

Slackware :: Enable Windows Wireless Drivers In Slackware 13.1 And How To Install XFCE

I recently installed Slackware Linux 13.1 , and my Wireless is down. I've only installed 3 Linux disto's on my main laptop (Ubuntu 9.10 , 10.04 , and Crunchbang Linux 9.04 , just had Crunchbang), and they all had the same problem. In all three , I was able to enable Windows Wireless drivers and every thing worked. Now , I'm assuming I have to the same ting in Slackware? Sorry , but I have no idea what my wireless card is. But I know that my laptop is a Dell Insprion E1705. One last thing , I did ifconfig and that wlan0 is my Wi-Fi interface. I typed ifconfig wlan0 up to see if that was the problem. After I did that , I got and error message. Then I typed ifconfig wlan0 down to see if it was down and it made wlan0 down. I tried bringing it up again , but I got an error saying it couldn't find the device specified. Also , how do I install XFCE? I really don't like KDE for some reason and would like to install XFCE. I chose XFCE over GNOME (my favorite) because I want to try something new.

Slackware :: Linvo 2009.1rc6 - Slackware-based LiveCD With GNOME

Jan 6, 2010

I'm happy to announce Linvo 2009.1 rc6. It's a full-featured Linux distribution with a lot of applications by default, including an office suite (OpenOffice.org extended with plugins), a good internet browser (Firefox extended with plugins), a music player that supports music collection and a lot more - Exaile, a video player, and all the available codecs. It can open all types of file formats. It's a LiveCD, which means that you can test it without installing and after this optionally install it - it has a nice easy graphical installer.

It's the first Slackware-based LiveCD distribution with GNOME by default. It includes NetworkManager and initng in place of sysvinit. It also features accessibility tools. It is also the first release with the innovative portable applications system. This allows you to download application from the site (modules section), place it where you like, and use it. It's just a single file, no directories. You can also use this application without installing it, directly from the internet. However, after this, the speed of the application is limited by the speed of your connection, of course. Check out the "Applications" section on the website.

Besides this, you can install software with the apt-get-like system "slapt-get" and it's graphical front-end: GSlapt. It also contains src2pkg and sbopkg in case you want to compile something from source or existing SlackBuild Depfinder is included to find dependencies of packages. Click here for a guide on how to use those. I also managed to put development tools in there, like GCC, G++, svn, cvs, so on... This is a release candidate, and despite that it's OK for using. It has a bit more things to do until the release (like language selection on the boot menu), but I decided that it's important to put it here for testing.
