Slackware :: Gs Segfault When Joining Pdf Files?

Dec 28, 2010

I usually use the following command to join several PDF files in one :gs -dBATCH -dNOPAUSE -q -sDEVICE=pdfwrite -sOutputFile=output.pdf input1.pdf input2.pdfHadn't have to do it for a while but today, I needed it and thus fired my script.lam! gs segfaults.A quick internet search and I found this : Arch related, while I'm running slackware64-current, the behaviour was exactly the same as mine.In the above thread, one guy linked to a bug report which seems to be theculprit : 4.5.1, gs 9.00, x86_64, indeed, slackware64 seems to be exactly in that situation.

Slackware :: Upgrade To 13.1 Causes Segfault In Program That Ran Under 13.0

Mar 10, 2011

I have a custom program that has been running on Slackware since about 2004. It was running fine on Slackware 13.0, but an upgrade (following the procedure in UPGRADE.TXT) to 13.1 causes the program to segfault on a read/write op to the serial port (details here).

what might have changed between 13.0 and 13.1 that might affect serial port programming? I've been through CHANGES_AND_HINTS but nothing is jumping out at me.

Slackware :: Goggles Music Manager - Segfault On Execute In - Current?

Apr 26, 2010

Goggles music manager no longer works in my current install. When I first upgraded, it was complaining about ligtag-extras library not existing, but this was because the version got upgraded. So I recompiled, and now it just segfaults, both with the slackbuild version (0.10.14) and the latest release (0.10.19). Here is dmesg:

Slackware :: Xine - Dragonplayer Segfault Playing H264 Video?

Dec 10, 2010

I was trying to play an MP4 (h264) video from Meet The Gimp (in particular, this one) but both xine and dragonplayer would play a couple of seconds of it (poorly) and then segfault and die. The error spew looked like:

$ xine meetthegimp152.mp4
This is xine (X11 gui) - a free video player v0.99.5.
(c) 2000-2007 The xine Team.

dragonplayer emitted the same output, so I assumed it was something amiss in one of the libraries they both use. mplayer plays the video, so I'm not without recourse, but it would be nice to know what's up with the segfaults. Anyone seen something like this?
System specifics, if it matters:

Slackware 13.1 (freshly installed)
AMD64x2 5600
GeForce 8800 GTX w/ 768MiB VRAM

I've upgraded Slackware-13.1 I had installed to Slackware-Current using a local tree I had download with script, but when I rebooted I could not get the graphics to load. I think it's because I've also modified /etc/groups and add an username after audio: and video: group, but I forgot that and had to remove slackware from the machine.

Slackware :: KDE - What To Do After Upgrading From 13.1 To 13.37

May 1, 2011

Some time in the past after upgrading from one version of Slackware to another, I remember having issues using the previous version's .kde directory. This was remedied by removing that directory and letting KDE recreate it followed by me painstakingly migrating files one by one to get all my settings, mail, etc. under the new version of KDE. Is this the case with the upgrade from 13.1 to 13.37 and is there a better way that I'm missing?!

Slackware :: Upgrading KDE From 4.2 To 4.3 (64bit)

Mar 30, 2010

I'm trying to upgrade KDE from 4.2 to 4.3 since I encountered couples of problem with it and some people suggested me to upgrade it to 4.3.

1. Is KDE 4.3 available in 64 bit?
2. KDE consists of bunch of packages, what is the best way to start? Should I uninstall the whole current packages in my machine and then install the new ones?
3. Using pkgtool, how do I know if I remove the whole KDE packages? Are all KDE packages named that begin with word "KDE"?
4. How to do this safely so to avoid corrupting the system?

Slackware :: Upgrading Slack From 13.1 To 13.37?

I have some doubts about the official Pat's upgrading procedure. In the UPGRADE.TXT file, one of the stepts says:

upgradepkg --install-new *.t?z What does --install-new mean? Pkgs I have no installed on my 13.1 will be installed on the 13.37 upgrade? For example, I did not installed KDE on 13.1. Will be installed when upgrade? - What about third party pkgs? Slacky,, compiled by myself. Should I remove them before upgrading slack?

Slackware :: Upgrading 64 Kernel Packages

Jan 23, 2010

1. Upgrade the kernel and kernel-modules packages normally.

That sounds simple except that day-to-day, I don't run a stock Slackware kernel. I compile and run my own and always have. As I look back on my history with Slackware, I don't think I've ever upgraded kernel packages once I got a system up and running. When there's been big changes (2.4 to 2.6, for example), I've done a full re-install.

Most recently when I made the jump to 64bit, I did a full install using the huge.s kernel and once everything worked, I downloaded the current source from and was on my way. I haven't booted huge.s since that day.

I do, of course, know how to upgrade my own custom kernel, but I like having huge.s installed as a backup. If I upgrade gcc/glibc, compile a new custom kernel and update lilo.conf/fstab without upgrading huge.s, then I will be left with only one working kernel.

So, my question is: is it simply a matter of running upgradepkg on the 6 kernel packages (headers, modules, firmware, generic, huge and source)? or is there more to it than, what about the system maps and symlinks in /boot?

Slackware :: Upgrading To -current And Multi-lib From 13.1?

Nov 16, 2010

I'm looking at running -current instead of 13.1, and wondering about 'upgrading' to -current, as well as running multi-lib. I found the following procedures from another post of about a year ago, but I'm not sure from what directory to run such a script:

# Upgrade to Slackware64-current
upgradepkg --install-new slackware64-current/slackware64/*.t?z
# Download compat32 stuff

Should the procedures above work for me? and although I know that things may occasionally break here and there (and get fixed too), are there any known issues right now that would break things on my machine?

Slackware :: Corrupted Graphics In TightVNC After Upgrading To Slack-13.0?

Nov 13, 2010

I've recently upgraded from Slackware 12.2 to Slackware 13.0 and so far everything works fine with one exception: the TightVNC package that comes with Slackware-13.0 (in /extra) produces a garbled desktop. Applications look fine, but the default desktop of 13.0 is corrupted. Restarting the VNC server doesn't solve the problem. Before the upgrade, I had 1.3.9 compiled from source. I have just installed the 1.3.10 package that came with Slack-13.0 on top of what was there, hoping it would overwrite old files as needed (couldn't find an automatic uninstall procedure for 1.3.9).

I have attached a printscreen. Notice the taskbar and the top left quarter of the screen. Firefox seems to be rendered properly though. Has anyone encountered this before or may have a clue what could be causing it?

May 1, 2011

Is it possible to upgrade a Slackware installation from a freshly d-loaded DVD? How would one go about this? Would the procedures in the Upgrade.txt work? I would assume they would need to be modified a bit, though, since I'm only upgrading the same version of Slackware. I'm not going from say 13.1 to 13.37. I just want to update a 13.37 current that I installed about three weeks ago to the now final release 13.37. If I could get my silly Trendnet TEW 423IP wireless PCI card to work in Slack, I could upgrade the normal way with Slackpkg.

Software :: How To Debug Ns-2 Code For Segfault

Jun 14, 2010

$ cat segfault.c
int main(void)
char *s = "hello world";

So, now we know where exactly the problem occures. I know only these three commands to debug using gdb. But in case of ns-2 code, I don't know how to use gdb.

I changed a routing protocol's C++ code in ns-2 and successfully recompiled ns-2 but when I run any tcl script with that particular protocol, I get 'segmentation fault'. Now I want to trace what part of the code is causing this. I have tried using 'printf's at suspectable places. Is this possible to debug ns-2 code with gdb just like the segfault.c above? I am useing fedora 9.

Programming :: Segfault In Program Using Pthreads

Mar 16, 2010

I am trying to write a peer to peer application in C++ using pthreads library. There are few types of nodes that run in the program. The 'beacon' nodes form the core of the network. The ordinary nodes 'join' the network by sending join requests to the beacon node. So, my program runs till the join requests and responses are received. When I try to 'connect' using connect function from the socket library, I get a segfault. I am not sure if the segfault occurs for the connect function, because sometimes the program just runs to completion. It could be an issue related to threads or memory allocation.

When I run gdb, it shows me the following:
(gdb) run b2-n00.ini
