Slackware :: Is Slocate (secure Locate) Still Maintained?
Feb 13, 2011
Google searches for "secure locate Kevin Lindsay" and "secure locate source" do not show any signs of ongoing maintenance, but do bring up a few security advisories related, afaict, to memory corruption. If it's a Google problem, sorry in advance to the maintainer.

Newbie here. I'm thinking about going from Ubuntu to Slackware and I just saw on Wikipedia that there is a number of projects that maintain GNOME binaries especially for Slack. So that made me wonder, why is that needed? What if I download a bare version of Slack and then build the standard GNOME version from source? Would that produce problems?

Having gone through the /etc/cron.daily directory I noticed that there is only the mlocate.cron file in comparison to what I have seen on other material where they cite slocate.cron. Is there a difference between these and their respective commands and if so what are they?

I was looking for what rehash command does and found this:
The rehash command re-computes the internal hash table of the contents of directories listed in the path environmental variable to account for new commands added.
I never knew about any internal hash tables. Why and how are they maintained?

Kernel 2.6.21.5, Slackware 12.0
Just after the booting process is finished, running ps I get this:
Code:
As you can see, there are a lot of names beginning with the letter 'k'. Are these processes needed for the GUI to be fully functional when it is run (X Window System + WM + Xfce4)? And can I setup the system such that they're never run?
The reason for this question is that I am testing some programs and need the CPU to have as little time stolen as possible.

I'm really new to this subject. Instead of purchasing hosting services from another party, what requirements are necessary to host a domain yourself, i.e.:
1. Minimal connection speed
2. Minimal hardware requirements, e.g. disc space
3. Effort to host domain and secure Slackware
4. Will an average ISP provide sufficient reliability, i.e. uptime, and bandwidth?

I'm an Oracle DBA and started working for my current employer about 4 months ago. This past weekend an alert re: FS space brought my attention to /var/spool/clientmqueue (full of mail re: cron jobs) and the fact that sendmail is not running on our Linux servers.I'm told that the IT security team deemed sendmail too vulnerable so we don't run it.Aside from FS filling up and missing notification of issues with crontab entries, I'm concerned that we may be missing notification of potential issues. In other Unix/Linux environments I've seen emails from the print daemon when it experienced problems with specific jobs.
Are there other Linux facilities aside from cron and lpd that use email to advise the users of possible issues? Are there ways to secure sendmail or secure alternatives to sendmail? My primary need/desire is to make sure that emails regarding issues on the server get to the appropriate users. Secondary goal would be to have the ability to use mailx to send mail out. There is No need/desire to receive mail from outside.

Anyway, the issue that I am having is that when running GDB, the program will execute perfectly fine if I allow it to run without breakpoints if I skip stepping through the function using the 'n' command, but it will provide me with the following error if I try to step through it:
35 srand( time(NULL));
(gdb) s
time () at ../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/x86_64/time.S:32
32 ../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/x86_64/time.S: No such file or directory.
in ../sysdeps/unix/sysv/linux/x86_64/time.S
This happens not just for time() but for every function that would be found in the included libraries.
I included stdlib in the code, and in fact this code works perfectly fine on another system using Ubuntu 10.04 and GDB. The source paths are identical between these two machines as well ( $cdir:$cwd ).

Using a Ubuntu 10.04 desktop...I just rebuilt another computer (Ubuntu 10.04-Server) and when I attempt to ssh to the box I of course have the ssh key from the old install. I get the messageQuote:Add correct host key in /home/ken/.ssh/known_hosts to get rid of this message.Offending key in /home/ken/.ssh/known_hosts:3So how do I determine which key is hosts:3? It is not the third key in the known_hosts file - I deleted that one and got the same error. As I only have 4 other computers on my network I generally just delete all entries from known_hosts when I reinstall the OS on one of the others. It is about time I learn how to do it correctly

I've just recently installed Debian on my laptop and I'm currently having problems with an occasional white flickering at the top of my screen.
I want to rule out whether this is a driver issue since at boot, just before the GUI pops up, I get a handful of error messages complaining about missing firmware.
So my first problem is rather simple: I'd like to actually read these messages in full but I cannot find them in /var/log/syslog or /var/log/dmesg.

OS: Fedora 11, x86_64.Are there means to nice the 'locate' processes setroubleshootd spawns?I am using Fedora 11 on a server with large number of files, SELinux is currently in permissive mode, and setroubleshootd periodically spawns processes running 'locate', it gobbles up CPU time.I haven't found any clues in setroubleshootd config file.Nothing in its logs, either. Is there a way to shut setroubleshootd in Fedora 11? There is no such service any more, and the way 'locate' works makes everything quite slow.

However I google, just can't locate it.
Is there anyway to locate packages specifically for openSUSE 11.3?
By the way, I've also tried :
- Webpin
- software.opensuse.org: Download openSUSE 11.3

Got an external harddisk and when inserting it into my desktop running openSUSE 11.2, dolphin will recognise it as /media/testing. Wanted to rename the device label from "testing" to "Backup". Googled and understand the way to do it is to issue this command e2label device new_label Mounting the external harddisk and issuing the above command returns
e2label: Is a directory while trying to open /media/testing/
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock. Without mounting the external harddisk and issuing the above command returns
e2label: No such file or directory while trying to open /media/testing/
Couldn't find valid filesystem superblock. The command lsusb returns Bus 001 Device 005: ID 1058:1010 Western Digital Technologies, Inc. How can I figure out the device name (/dev/sdx) of this external harddisk?

I was trying to backup everything, format/overwrite an partition to start with a fresh start after some annoying issues with my previous installation.
I had a perfectly fine working partition table and i chose to format partition
#1 (Ext4) partition (~50gb)
from the installation tool from the ubuntu live cd.
I had more partitions
#2 was ~5gbits swap
#3 was some unencrypted data(~20gb) (I think it was Ext3)
#4 was encrypted data (~150gb) (Ext4)
#5 unpartitioned data (~100gb)
So while doing this the installation failed somehow during the format of the disks, I tried testdisk but it couldn't locate the HDD nor any other program. When I look at my /dev it says this (from live cd):
root@ubuntu:/home/ubuntu# fdisk -l
root@ubuntu:/home/ubuntu#
Mount says:
root@ubuntu:/home/ubuntu# mount
aufs on / type aufs (rw)
none on /proc type proc (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
none on /sys type sysfs (rw,noexec, nosuid, nodev)
udev on /dev type tmpfs (rw,mode=0755)
/dev/sr0 on /cdrom type iso9660 (rw) .....
/dev/sdxx doesn't even exist and this also doesn't seem to work:
root@ubuntu:/dev# ls -al | grep h
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 3240 2010-01-12 00:16 char
crw-rw---- 1 root root 10, 228 2010-01-12 00:14 hpet
crw-rw---- 1 root root 10, 56 2010-01-12 00:14 network_throughput
drwxrwxrwt 2 root root 140 2010-01-12 00:32 shm
crw-rw---- 1 root root 10, 231 2010-01-12 00:14 snapshot
I nearly have the idea there is no hdd in my pc while I am very sure it was here some hours ago. I didn't made it fall on something hard while running or something so all inside of the box should be just fine. I can't reach my keepassx file (stored inside the encrypted part) so I also can't log onto my workspace or anything, it is quite crippling currently.

Recently installed 10.10 netbook edition, and evolution is behaving strangely. Albeit I've never used it before, but having read the documentation and googled it a bit I'm still lost. I cannot create or manage task lists. It's as if their functionality has been completely cut out of ev calendar. When I try to go to File->New->Task List, the Task list option does not appear in the menu (not greyed out, nothing). Can't find the button that's supposed to be there either. I've also checked synaptic for evolution task packages, but no avail.

I'm trying to install Ruby on Rails on an Ubuntu desktop VM. The network connection works ok but I can't seem to get this to work:
sudo apt-get install ruby1.9.2
I want the latest version of Ruby.
Is this because I haven't enabled some repository or something - I dimly recall having to 'enable universe' before now... but can't remember why or how....
